The First Baptist Church was organized in Stamford in early 1900. Frank Shelby Groner became pastor in 1905. He increased the membership from 147 to about 750 and that made a new and larger church necessary.[2] After using temporary facilities for seven years, the congregation had grown and prospered enough to initiate a new structure. Ten leading members of the church each pledged $1,000 for construction, and the new church stood as one of the city's most elaborate and expensive structures.
