Pentre Awel is a major, multi-million pound development in the Delta Lakes area of Llanelli. It is being led by Carmarthenshire County Council, with partners including the UK Government, Swansea University, and Hywel Dda University Health Board, among others. It is one of the nine major projects included in the Swansea Bay City Deal.

Construction on the first of four phases began in early 2023. This phase is estimated to be completed in 2024. It will include a new leisure centre for the area, along with business incubation hubs, and outdoor leisure facilities.

History edit

The development received £40 million in funding from the UK Government after its business case was approved in early 2022. It is one of the nine major projects that are part of the Swansea Bay City Deal.[1]

Carmarthenshire Council gave planning permission for Zone One of the project in 2022. Construction formally began on March 6th 2023, and this was marked by a visit from the then Secretary of State for Wales David Davies.[1]

The county are partnering with further and higher education providers, such as Coleg Sir Gâr and Cardiff University, to provide courses on the site.[2]

It is claimed that the development will create over 1,800 jobs, along with boosting the local economy by £467 million over a 15-year period.[3]

Design and construction edit

The site is being constructed on an 83-acre site in Llanelli's Delta Lakes area. It is split into four phases (or zones).[4] The main contractor for the construction is Bouygues.

It will comprise of five buildings including an aquatics centre, sports hall, multipurpose sports and fitness rooms and gym, education and training facilities, clinical delivery and research and innovation and business space. These will be linked by a "street" space.[1]

The construction site's cabins and offices are powered by solar and an onsite Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil generator.[5]
