Matthew Fisken is a New Zealand political candidate and former Youth MP.[1]. He ran unsuccessfully as a candidate for ACT New Zealand in the 2023 general election[2].

Early life and career edit

Fisken was born in Invercargill and attended Verdon College[3] before moving to Christchurch. He studied at the University of Canterbury[4].

In 2022 Fisken was the Youth Representative for Nicole McKee in the 10th New Zealand Youth Parliament where he was subject to controversy following the mass walkout of Youth MPs during his speech on firearms law reforms[5][6].

The following year, Fisken ran unsuccessfully as a candidate in the Christchurch Central Electorate for ACT New Zealand.[7][3]

Political views edit

Fisken describes himself as a libertarian, he is economically conservative and supports a smaller size and scope of government with less bureaucratic overreach. He believes in personal freedom and responsibility[3].

Fisken is a licensed gun owner and competitive pistol shooter. He opposed the 2019 gun control laws and claimed that it targeted law-abiding citizens and would not make anyone safer[8]
