Match 4 Crush is a free-to-play tile-matching video game publicly released by Heavensbee on Dec 12, 2023, originally for iOS, Android; other versions for Windows App Store, and Amazon App store , and Facebook are following.

Match 4 Crush, often referred to as Match 4, is a match-4 video game developed by Heavensbee Games Corp. (also known as Heavensbee or Heavensbee.games). Match 4 is the advancement of match 3 puzzle games, the most prominent of which being Candy Crush Saga (2012). The match 4 game design incorporates exclusive mechanics and level types, the computer implementation of which is complicated. Credit is given to the obnubilate game maker known as 'Plutarch', an appellation not surprising, coming from Heavensbee. Ironically, the most relied upon collaborator at Heavensbee is also the one most scrutinized. Much attention is spent ensuring Plutarch's designs don't become too convoluted. 'It's about finding the sweet spot!' says Heavensbee about Plutarch. The match 4 logic engine used during gameplay mode is coded in C++. Later, it was converted to C# to be implemented in Unity, where the first versions of the game were built. Heavensbee has already begun production of three related titles — Match 4 "?" — and the company's other mobile titles follow the same format.

IAP + IAA edit

Match 4 Crush has adopted the IAP (In App Purchasing) + IAA (In App Advertising) monetization model; while the game can be played completely through without spending money, players can buy Gold bars (through either a credit card, iTunes credits or Google Play credits) which are the in-game currency and are traded for special actions to help clear more difficult boards, from which Heavensbee makes revenue—alternatively, to play some levels the players must either watch an ad or trade Gold bars. In Match 4 Crush, unlike other famous match 3 games, there are no lives to exhaust, plus, many mini-games have the player watch an ad for an opportunity to win generous amounts of Gold bars without paying any real money. Gold bars can be used for extra moves, boosters or to play new levels. While the game includes freemium content, 97.71% of those playing the game do so for free, while only 2.29% pay.

Gameplay edit

Unlike match 3 games, Match 4 Crush is a "match four" game, which is played on a hexagon board consisting of hexagon tiles with a column and two rows angled at sixty (60) and one hundred and twenty (120) degrees instead of a convention grid board of square tiles with one row and column.

The core gameplay consists of swapping adjacent candies among several on the gameboard to make formations of at least four matching-colored candies. The shape of the formations range widely from parallelograms to diamonds to stars to straight lines to straight lines crossing other straight lines. The candies in a matched formation are removed from the board and the empty spaces left behind are filled by falling candies from above, with new candies appearing from the top of the board. This process, called cascading, may create new matched formations which are automatically cleared in the same manner. The cascading ceases when no more formations remain on the board. While the candies are cascading the player scores points for each match that occurs. Once a designated number of points are scored the player gets a star which is only kept if the player passes the level. Upon obtaining a designated number of stars the player is awarded a Gold bar in exchange for the stars.

Additionally, creating matches of five or more candies will create desserts which act as power-ups and can be detonated by double tapping or swiping in one of six directions to release powerful effects to clear sections of the board.

The game is split into many levels, which must be completed in sequence. Each level poses a different challenge to the user, such as removing jelly on tiles or clearing candies in a fixed number of moves to bring special ingredients to the bottom of the board. Throughout the game the boards have a number of different configurations and are large, consisting of up to one hundred and seventy one tiles. The boards may contain special spaces occupied by rotate-o-laters or teleporters. Completed levels can be replayed if desired.[1]

NPC Spirals & Fences edit

Match 4 Crush introduced the first true NPC into tile-matching games. The Spirals and Fences levels are composed of dynamic blockers which act as computer opponents. The movement and growth of Spirals and Fences is not scripted or predetermined, instead a special supervisory class of computer code oversees the entire board at run-time to determine what new positions the blockers should move to or occupy. In contrast to every other blocker in every other tile-matching game where the blockers are either stationary or follow a set routine.

Characters & Candies edit

Each level is hosted by one of four main characters in the game, either Plum, Foxy, the Bon Bon Burglar, or Dakota.

At the beginning of the game when choosing a level the player is greeted by Plum, Whaley and Owl.

Before gameplay the character Jean-Claude ushers the player to the board after watching an ad, if necessary.

Match 4 Gaming vs Match 3 edit

The new Match 4 genre represents a comprehensive expansion of the match 3 tile-matching genre; the mathematics testify to the fact. The number of unique same colored candy formations constituting a match in match 3 is seven, a square, a 3-line, a 4-line, a 5-line, a T-shape, an L-shape and a large T-shape. The number of unique same colored candy formations constituting a match in match 4 is sixty three. This enormous discrepancy results from the different approach match 4 takes to determine matches. Instead of set formations of candies constituting matches, as in match 3, match 4 provides simple rules for players to create formations that constitute matches. A first rule is any cluster of four same colored candies appearing as a parallelogram or diamond. The second is a formation match, like match 3, where four same colored candies create a star shape. A third rule is four or more same colored candies in a row. A fourth rule is three or more same colored candies in a row crossed with three or more of the same colored candies (also) in a row. A fifth rule is three or more same colored candies in a row crossed with three or more of the same colored candies (also) in a row crossed with three or more of the same colored candies (again also) in a row.

To sum up the match formations, there are Stars, Parallelograms, Diamonds, Lines, Lines x Lines, Lines x Lines x Lines

In match 4 the formations can be rotated at six different angles on the hexagon boards to create matches, unlike match 3 formations which can only be rotated at four different angles. So there are ten times more formations which can be rotated at fifty percent more angles (six is fifty percent more than four) meaning there are fifteen times more ways to make matches in match 4 then in match 3.

Special Effects edit

Match 4 Crush has introduced "desserts" to replace the special candies in match 3 games. The desserts in match 4 do not detonate when matched the way special candies in match 3 detonate. Instead the players can choose when, where and how to detonate desserts, a huge departure from match 3 in terms of game design. There are two types of desserts called "Elective" and "Booster".

There are five "Elective" desserts, which the player can create during gameplay by matching candies, they are Mousse, Fool, Cherry Cheesecake, Trifle and Log Cone. Elective desserts can be detonated by the player at any position on the board, during any move in the level, and by either double tapping or swiping in any one of six directions. The Elective desserts are capable of producing two special effects, one is released when double tapped the other is released when swiped, the player chooses which to release. The special effect released when a dessert is swiped can be directed in any one of six directions. The special effect released when a dessert is double tapped almost always emanates from the location of the detonated dessert.[2]

Booster desserts can not be created during gameplay and they can only be activated by double tapping. Both Elective and Booster desserts can populate or be dispensed onto the board. Also, Gold Bars can be traded for both types of desserts before the start of each level, however, only Boosters can be traded for Gold Bars during gameplay. The nine Booster desserts are Affogato, Cake, Parfait, Orange Custard, Mint Baubles, Tiramisu, Molten Pudding, Popcorn and Fish Roulade.
