Luiz Paulo Kowalski (August 16, 1956) is a head and neck surgeon, otolaryngologist, researcher and university professor from Brazil.[1]
Since 2019, he has been Professor of Head and Neck Surgery at the Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo (FMUSP) and is currently head of the Head and Neck Tumors Reference Center the A.C.Camargo Cancer Center,[2][3] after directing the Department of Head and Neck Surgery of the institution for 30 years.
Kowalski is one of the world's leading authorities on head and neck cancer[4][5][6] and has treated several political figures, such as the president Luís Inácio Lula da Silva, who has a pharynx cancer in 2011.[4][7][8][9][10] He's responsible for 70% of foreign patients who look for cancer surgery at the A.C.Camargo Cancer Center, in São Paulo.[11]
In 2020, Kowalski was considered one of the top 100,000 scientists in the world, in the ranking by the scientific magazine Journal PLOS Biology.[12]

A graduate of the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR), Kowalski has dedicated his expertise to the meticulous surgical treatment of head and neck diseases, notably cancer.
Luiz Paulo completed his master's degree in 1986 and his doctorate in 1989, both in Otorhinolaryngology, at the Escola Paulista de Medicina, in São Paulo.. During his doctorate, Kowalski completed an internship as a CNPq fellow at the Head and Neck Service at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
A senior author, Kowalski has published more than 850 scientific articles, 690 of which in indexed international journals, in addition to writing 150 book chapters and editing 13 books.[13][14] His work has already received more than 20 thousand citations on the Web of Science.[15]
Personal life edit
In 2007, Kowalski went from doctor to patient: he was diagnosed with a benign tumor in the parotid region, a lesion of the facial nerve within the salivary gland. The entire surgical procedure to remove the tumor and reconstruction was carried out by the team which he coordinated at the A.C.Camargo Cancer Center.[16]
