Love Go Go (also known as Ai qing lai le)[1] is a Taiwanese film released in 1997. It is director Chen Yu-Hsun’s second film, a comedy which consists of stories about love centering on four main characters in Taipei city. The film won many awards, including Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress at the Golden Horse Awards, the Young Director Competition at the Tokyo Film Festival and the best film voted by the new generation of film critics at the Taipei Film Festival. It was selected to be in competition at the Tokyo International Film Festival and Toronto Film Festival.[2]

Plot edit

The film consists of stories of five protagonists loosely linked together: Ah-Sheng (阿盛), a baker, Li-Li (莉莉), Xiao-Xu (小徐), a song writer, an office girl, and Ah-Song (阿松), a salesman, and Li-Hua (麗華), a hairdresser. Ah-Sheng, Xiao-Su, and Li-Li share a small apartment. Li-Hua was Ah-shen’s elementary school classmate.

One day Ah-Sheng, a baker who is learning how to sing with Xiao-xu, happened to see his elementary school classmate Li-Hua walk into the bakery he works in. Ah-Sheng recalled the good times he spent with Li-Hua and their promise to go to the US together to see the invisible man when they grew up. However, Li-Hua disappeared from his life without a trace. Ah Sheng waited for Li-Hua to come to the bakery every day but did not have the courage to tell her who he was. He finally wrote her a letter to tell her how she had always been by his side helping him pass the worst days of his childhood though invisible to him.  He also told her that he had signed up for a TV singing competition to sing a song dedicated to her.

In the meantime, Li-Li accidentally found a pager on the road. Out of curiosity, she contacted the owner and was attracted by his charming voice. The owner of the pager told her that he wanted to commit suicide because there was no love in his life. To comfort him Li-Li began to talk to him on the phone often and soon fell in love with the man on the other side of the phone. The man’s request for a meetup made Li-Li, who was overweight, determined to lose weight. Despite various attempts, Li-Li still failed to be thinner. On the day they met, Li-Li was heartbroken to find out that the owner was a rude vagrant-like man and hurt by his obvious displeasure about her outlook.

A rookie salesman of female self-defence weapons, Ah-song, went to Li-Hua's salon hoping to sell some of his products including a gas gun on his birthday. But he was too shy to begin before he was taken to be a customer to have a haircut. When he witnessed Li-hu being attacked by a woman who claimed Li-Hua was having an affair with her husband. Ah-song took out his gas gun and helped Li-Hua escape to the building’s rooftop. Li-hu first thought Ah-song was a robber. After knowing that it was his birthday she finished his haircut outdoors and helped him assemble a huge “Happy Birthday to Me” image on the rooftop.

At the home she shared with her married lover, Li-Hua turned on the TV to watch Ah-Sheng sing for him. Her lover left a big cake and a note for her telling her they better finish the affair, which broke Li-Hua’s heart and she began to cry. However, Ah-Sheng’s singing was so sincerely hilarious that she could not help but laugh out and be comforted.

Production edit

Love Go Go was released two years after Chen Yu-Hsun’s feature film Tropical Fish. The script was written in five days in order to meet the application deadline of the subsidy of NT$ 10 million for feature films offered by the Bureau of Audiovisual and Music Industry Development (BAMID).[3]

Chen said that his scripts usually started from characters, and those characters were usually inspired by the friends around him.[4] The actor Chen Jin-Xin who played Ah-Sheng was a production assistant and he had played a small part in Tropical Fish before being casted in Love Go Go. Ma Nien-Hsien who played Xiao-xu was the singer in a Taiwanese rock band, Sticky Rice (糯米團), and the band’s song was also played in the first section of Love Go Go.[5] Jane Liao who played Li-Li worked in Chen Yu-Hsun’s friend’s company, and displayed a great interest to play this role. Chen Jin-Xin and Jane Liao respectively won Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress at the Golden Horse Awards because of this film.[6]

The film did not do well at the box office even with extra efforts of promotion.[7] Chen Yu-Hsun as a result took a long break before directing his next feature film.[4]
