Early years edit

K. Narayana Aiyer was born at Poojappura, Trivandrum as the second son of P. Krishna Iyer and Lekshmy Ammal in the year 1906.  His elder brother was K. Padmanabha Iyer and younger brother K. Ramnoth who later became a famous Director and Cinematographer in Tamil Film Industry. He had three sisters namely K. Saraswathy Ammal, K. Balambal and K. Krishnambal.  He had his basic education in Trivandrum and completed his BA and MA in Botany from the University College, Trivandrum.  He secured First Class First Rank and won the Gold Medal for M.A (Botany) from the Madras Presidency. He passed away in 1969.[1]

After education he got his appointment as Tutor in Botany at University College, Trivandrum during 1927-28.  He was later on promoted as Asst. Professor of Botany and continued his service in the University College, Trivandrum.  During those years he used to take students to various parts of Kerala for Herbarium collection especially in the mountains.  He was so interested in the plants that he developed a skill of identifying plants and their usage.  He continued in the University College till 1946.  In the year 1946 the University of Travancore decided to start a Pharmacognosy Unit[2] for identifying Ayurvedic Drugs with its proper Botanical source. The work on the Pharmacognosy of Ayurvedic Drugs of vegetable origin with special reference to Travancore- Cochin[3]  was started by the Travancore University in January 1946, under the administrative control of the Director of Research and the supervision of Dr.T.K.Koshy the then Professor of Botany, University College, Trivandrum.  K. Narayana Iyer was deputed as the full time Special Officer of the Pharmacognosy Unit.

This series was published from 1951 to 1966.[4]

Botanical Garden and Herbarium edit

From childhood onwards K. Narayana Iyer had a great passion towards nature and Plants. When  be became lecturer in Botany he used to take the students to various parts of Kerala for specimen collection and study of plants. [1] He identified and started collecting rare plants from the mountains and plant them in around his home. He has travelled to various hills and mountains in the state to collect the plants and plant them in his garden.  He went to Attapadi Village for studying the Adivasi people who were using a particular plant for Birth control.  Dr. Sushila Nayyar, Union Health Minister, Govt. of India visited his botanical garden during 1963.  She was impressed with the Botanical Garden and granted a small amount for the maintenance of it.  His ability to identify plants and herbs was so famous through out the State that even great Ayurvedic Physicians like Vayaskara Moose occasionally visited him to clear his doubts in identifying plants.  He was a well known Taxonomist  known throughout India.  While visiting the various hills and mountains of Kerala he used to collect specimens of plants and preserved them in his herbarium.[5] After his death the herbarium was handed over to Topical Botanical Garden and Research Institute, Palode, Trivandrum (now known as Jawaharlal Nehru Tropical Botanic Garden and Research Institute) by his family members.

K. Narayana Iyer married P. Kamalambal D/o Mahakavi Ulloor S. Parameswara Iyer on 3rd February 1929. The couple had 5 sons and 4 daughters. One daughter N. Lakshmi later became the Professor of Pharmacognosy and was also in charge of the Pharmacognosy Unit of the Government of India. Series I No.12 of the Pharmacognosy of Ayurvedic Drugs – Kerala was published in 1996 and authored by her.
