Janine Teagues is the protagonist of Abbott Elementary. She is portrayed by series creator, Quinta Brunson, and is based off of Brunson's mother, who is a second-grade teacher. [1]
During the events of the first season, Janine is looked over by the staff of Abbott, specifically Ava who bullies her numerous times. During the season, she dates Tariq, with whom she has been since the 8th grade. She struggles with the thought of ending her relationship with Tariq, with Abbott's staff siding with their breakup. At the end of the season, she breaks up with him when he decides to move to New York City to begin his career as a professional rapper.In the second season, Janine struggles to get over Tariq. She has difficulty paying her rent since she initially split the bill each month with Tariq. In "The Principal's Office", while trying to rekindle Melissa's relationship with her sister Kristen Marie, Janine describes her complex family history, with a mother who never paid her any attention and a sister who lives in a different state. In "Candy Zombies", Janine reveals to Barbara and Melissa that she has no friends outside of work following her breakup with Tariq; however, Erika, an old friend of Janine and Tariq, supports Janine and invites her to parties to increase her social mobility. Janine invites her distant sister Ayesha to visit during "Fight". Gregory's friend Maurice asks her out in "The Fundraiser", which makes him jealous.
