Irdorath is a Austrian fantasy-folk group originally from Belarus, performing author's, folk and medieval music. The band's style has a noble dark tone, and the music has a powerful and unusual sound due to the combination of acoustic musical instruments (such as bagpipes, hurdy-gurdy, didgeribone, cello and bouzouki) and a double drum set. Irdorath focuses on the show, using fantasy costumes, large-scale sets, atmospheric performances, elements of choreography, neon and fire shows. Interesting is the clipography, which reveals the original audiovisual language of the group. The theme of Slavic mythological culture can be traced in the work.

History edit

The group has been counting since 2011, when the founders (now spouses) Vladimir and Nadezhda Irdorat decided to move to Minsk in order to record their debut album and develop the project.

In 2009, in Grodno, Nadezhda (a law student) and Vladimir (a student at the College of Arts) began to try their hand at medieval music, master instruments, and study musical material. Initially, it was a street duet, where Vladimir played the German bagpipes, and Nadezhda played the davul. They were often joined by fire show artists and dancers. There were first attempts to travel to Belarusian festivals.

In the summer of 2010, during the Festival of National Cultures in Grodno, Vitaliy Buivid (string player) joined the band, and in October the band was supplemented by drummer Pavel Shmyga. A number of trips to folk festivals in Belarus, Poland and Russia followed. However, this line-up lasted only until the moment when the idea arose to take the group from the rank of a hobby to a new level and create Irdorath as a serious musical project.

In 2011 Vladimir and Nadezhda moved to Minsk. This moment is considered the birthday of the band Irdorath. The duet is joined by Anton Shnip, with whom they lived and worked on their first album in a non-functioning boarding house near Minsk, in which the construction of the historical and cultural center "Knight's Castle" took place. Together they built a temporary studio from improvised materials, in which, with the help of friends, they recorded the first album. At the same time, the musicians organized the concert part of the White Castle festival[1], held cultural events and themed parties, held the Fire Fight[2] fire art competition, and created the musical performance The Legend of Palladin. Together with drummer Valery Priyomko, they resumed and intensified their concert activity.

On September 1, 2012, the Minsk club Re:Public hosted a presentation of Irdorath's debut album called Ad Astra (part of the winged Latin saying per aspera ad astra - "through thorns to the stars")[3]. By this time, the group managed to acquire its own emblem, which depicts a dragon biting its own tail, and the slogan: "On the wings of a dragon, forward to the stars!".

The success of the debut album prompted the group to actively expand the geography of performances. In the next two years, the team played many concerts both in the CIS and at concert venues in Poland, Lithuania, Germany and France.
