Dr. Salvador, also known as Chainsaw Man, is a character and enemy from the 2005 survival horror video game Resident Evil 4 and its 2023 remake, developed by the Japanese company Capcom. A member of the Los Illuminados cult that Leon S. Kennedy encounters in Spain while on his mission to rescue Ashley Graham, Dr. Salvador is a Ganado infected with the Las Plagas paratise. Far stronger and more durable than the common Ganados, Dr. Salvador is armed with a chainsaw, giving him the ability to kill the protagonist with one strike.

Concept and creation edit

Dr. Salvador was created by Masaki Yamanaka, lead designer for Resident Evil 4,[1] in a design process he called "unique" due to the lack of restrictions on scenario or setting, and only basic guidelines had had to follow.[2] While working on the Villager Ganados, the development team was pleased with the results and "thought they [the Ganados] would be very scary".[3] However, in order to "add a little spice" to the them,[4] the team considered giving one of them a big weapon.[5] Yamanaka further stated that he created Dr. Salvador because he wanted a "strong" enemy among the weaker Ganados.[6] Upon the decision to create a Villager Ganado stronger than his baseline counterparts, it was decided to settle on giving the enemy a chainsaw.[7] Due to budgetary issues, Yamanaka only added a bag to hide Dr. Salvador's face, alongside giving him a chainsaw.[6] Per Resident Evil 4 director Shinji Mikami's request, Yamanaka made the corners of the bag on Dr. Salvador's head stand up straight.[6]

For the remake of Resident Evil 4, art director Hirofumi Nakaoka stated that various iterations of Dr. Salvador were discussed, with Capcom's aim being to make the character "even more terrifying".[8] The development team considered various concepts regarding his appearance, such as making Dr. Salvador taller, more muscular, or adding a coat to his design. However, upon replaying the original game, the team realized that what made Dr. Salvador scary is that, despite his bag and chainsaw, he "looks like a normal guy".[8] Nakaoka argued that what made the Ganados terrifying is "the idea that these were once regular, decent people", and this line of thinking was applied to Dr. Salvador's design process for the remake, noting that if they had redesigned him to be "really muscular or look non-human while holding the chainsaw" he wouldn't be as frightening.[8]

Appearances edit

Original edit

Dr. Salvador first appears in 2005's Resident Evil 4, variously described as a "boss"[9] or "mini-boss".[10] In contrast to baseline Village Ganados, Dr. Salvador has more health and a higher running speed.[11] Wearing a "burlap sack" over his head, Dr. Salvador is a equipped with a chainsaw that he can use to instantly decapitate Leon S. Kennedy.
