Claytopia was a platforming puzzle game developed by the game company Framejam. The paid version was released on 28 December 2012 on iOS with the free version releasing on 15 January 2013[1]. In Claytopia, players controlled the movement of a player character made of clay and navigated clay levels, while avoiding obstacles such as spikes.

Gameplay edit

Claytopia consisted of 55 levels and 6 environments, with each level containing 3 collectible stars. The environments consisted of: Factory, Sewers, Warehouse, Pipes, Laboratory, and Danger Zone, with each environment being harder than the last. Danger Zone was only unlocked after every star in the game was collected.

Gameplay mechanics consisted of Hammer, Drain, Cleaver, Switch, Jelly Cube, Vents, and crystals. Hammer squashed the player to be able to fit into shorter height spaces and was the first mechanic introduced in the game. The drain mechanic allows the player to finish the level, by using the hammer mechanic above a drain it sends the player down the drain to the next level. The Cleaver mechanic splits the character into two interchangeable characters that can be switched using the switch mechanic, where the player double-taps on the screen to switch to the other character. The Jelly Cube was introduced in the warehouse environment and can be moved onto buttons, or be combined with the hammer mechanic to create a higher jump than what was possible without the cube. Vents were introduced in the pipes environment and functioned so the full character could walk through them, but not the smaller split characters. Crystal blocks were introduced in the laboratory environment, and could only support small weights, so the crystals would break if the large character were to walk on them. The crystals would grow back after about 15 seconds after they were broken.

Levels contained certain mechanisms like buttons that activate platforms with the corresponding color. Levels also contained spikes, which could sometimes be activated or deactivated by a button with the corresponding color. Jelly cubes could also be moved onto buttons to activate them without a player standing on them. Each environment also contained its own background, block design, and soundtrack.

Pre-Claytopia edit

An early version of Claytopia was created for the Bivouac 2012 Boulevard Scion, which was a technology convention that consisted of three main portions: creation of a video game, creation of an animated short film, and creation of digital art[2]. Each competitor had a total of only 48 hours to complete their projects. Framejam teamed up with the Bacon 8its team (Bacon Bits) in the video game creation competition. The overall theme for the video game creation was “One against all, all against one”, which inspired the team to create a game where the player has to solve puzzles to free characters that were locked by an evil magician to reform a mythical guardian of the world. Framejam had created the game entirely out of clay, to which they coined the name Reclaym.

On 25 June 2012, Framejam announced on their website they would be creating a full game based on their idea of Reclaym from the competition[3]. They had renamed the game to Claytopia to avoid confusion with the demo, and the projected release date at this time was at the beginning of August 2012 and was expected to have 50 levels, 6 worlds/environments, ~30 unlockable achievements, and 3 stars in each level. On 9 July 2012, Framejam gave a development update on their website, that they completed the splash menus for the game and revealed the 6 environments.

On 7 August 2012, Framejam gave a development update revealing many new features of the video game[4]. They also claim that they still needed a month or two for development, which was eventually delayed even further.

Release edit

Claytopia was released on 28 December 2012 and claimed that it was “one of the best puzzle/platformers on the app store”. Its listed features include “55 unique levels, 6 colorful environments Various game mechanics: Smash, Jump, Cleave, Bounce, Swap, Crash, and much more! Stunning handmade clay graphics, more than 30 unlockable achievements, an additional environment after you complete the main story Easter eggs, constant free updates with new levels, and more!”. The game received a liking among players, with a star rating of 4.5/5.[5]

Post-Claytopia edit

Claytopia was removed from the app store later on, after a lack of updates and possible disbandment of Framejam, after no activity on their social media platforms after the game was published. The game is impossible to play unless you have previously downloaded it on an iOS device, and cannot be emulated on an Android device, due to it never being released on Google Play.
