"California Girls" is a song co-written and produced by American country music artist Gretchen Wilson. The song was co-written with John Rich and was also produced by Wilson, Rich, and Mark Wright. Wilson's label, Epic Nashville, released it on June 16, 2006 as the fourth and final single from her second studio album All Jacked Up (2005). The song became Wilson's eighth consecutive top 40 hit on the Hot Country Songs chart, peaking at number 25. It also peaked at number 21 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart.
Critical reception edit
"California Girls" received mostly favorable reviews from music critics. AllMusic gave it a mostly neutral rating, noting how Wilson "thumbs her nose at Hollywood excess and body image".[1] The Los Angeles Times gave it a positive review and noted it as the "radio highlight" on All Jacked Up.[2] Slant Magazine however gave the song a negative review, especially noting the "instantly-dated verse about how [Wilson] doesn't care for New York native Paris Hilton."[3]
Commercial performance edit
"California Girls" debuted at number 53 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs on June 17, 2006.[4] The song reached its peak position of number 25 on its ninth week on the chart, on August 12, becoming the album's fourth top forty hit and Wilson's eighth consecutive, starting with her debut single "Redneck Woman" (2004).[5] The song spent 17 weeks total on the chart.
