Command Sergeant Major John P. McDwyer enlisted in the United States Army in 1988. He attended Basic Training and Armor Advanced Individual Training (19K) at Fort Knox, Kentucky as an Armor crewman.

His military assignments include D Company, 2nd Battalion,68th Armor Regiment, 8th ID (M), Baumholder, Germany, as a Tank Driver, Loader and Gunner; D Company and HHC, 3rd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment,1CD, Fort Hood, Texas, as Tank Gunner, Tank Commander, Tank Company Master Gunner, Battalion Master Gunner and deployed in support of Operation Desert Fox; G Troop, 1st Squadron 16th Cavalry Regiment, Fort Knox, Kentucky, as an M1A2 Instructor and Platoon Sergeant; A Company, 1st Battalion,12th  Cavalry Regiment, 1CD, Fort Hood, Texas, as a Tank Platoon Sergeant; 2nd BN 409 TS Regiment, Cookeville, Tennessee, as an AC/RC Advisor to the 3rd Squadron, 278th ACR; C Troop 1st Squadron,10th US Cavalry Regiment, 4ID, Fort Hood, Texas, as Ground Troop 1SG and deployed to OIF 1 and OIF 05-07; Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana, as the Senior Military Instructor; 4IBCT, 4ID, Fort Carson, Colorado, as the Brigade Operations Sergeant Major; 2nd Battalion, 34th Armor Regiment, Fort Riley, Kansas, as the Battalion CSM and deployed to Afghanistan in support of OEF 11-12; Bronco Team, Operations Group, National Training Center, Fort Irwin, California, as the BDE CSM OC/T; NCO Academy Hawaii, Schofield Barracks, as the Commandant; Combined Arms Center-Training, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, as the Sergeant Major; Division West, First United States Army, Fort Hood, Texas, as the Division Command Sergeant Major; First United States Army, Rock Island, Illinois, as the Command Sergeant Major.

His military education includes Warrior leaders Course, Advanced leaders Course (Commandants list), Senior leaders Course (Distinguished Honor Graduate), Resident 1SG Course, the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy Non-Resident Course, and the Nominative Leaders Course. CSM McDwyer has also completed the M1A1 Master Gunner Course, the M1A2 Master Gunner Course, and the Senior Instructor Course. CSM McDwyer is currently completing his bachelor’s degree from Troy University.
