Booster Gold is an upcoming American television series based on the DC Comics featuring the character Booster Gold. Produced by DC Studios, it will be the fifth television series in the DC Universe (DCU). Booster Gold is a "loser" from the future who travels back in time to pose as a superhero using basic future technology.

A series based on Booster Gold was ordered by Syfy in November 2011, before being reworked into a planned feature film in 2016. After James Gunn and Peter Safran became co-CEOs of DC Studios in October 2022, they announced a new Booster Gold television series with a comedic tone to take place within their new DCU.

Booster Gold will be released on the streaming service Max. It will be part of the DCU's Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.

Background edit

After the DC Comics character Booster Gold appeared in the 2011 Smallville episode "Booster", portrayed by Eric Martsolf,[2] development on a Booster Gold series began. A pilot script for the series was ordered by Syfy in November 2011, from writer Andrew Kreisberg and executive producer Greg Berlanti.[3] Kreisberg submitted the script to Syfy in early June 2013.[4] Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the second film in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU)—a DC Comics-based shared universe of films—was released in March 2016 and received negative responses from fans and critics for its dark tone.[5] Warner Bros. Pictures reorganized future DC projects under the new DC Films division,[6] led by executive Jon Berg and comic book writer Geoff Johns who wanted to make future films more optimistic and hopeful.[6][7] In May, a Booster Gold film was reported to be in development as a much lighter addition to the DC Films slate. Zack Stentz was writing the film for producer Berlanti, who was also interested in directing it.[8] Berlanti explained in September that he and Kreisberg had met with Johns after their planned series did not move forward and the possibility of making a Booster Gold film came up. The pair had worked with Stentz to flesh out the story, which did not have any connections to the DCEU films.[9] There was no public movement on the film until March 2018, when Berlanti confirmed that the script had been written and said he was waiting for Warner Bros. to find room in their film slate for it.[10] Stentz reiterated this status in May 2019.[11]

In April 2022, Discovery, Inc. and Warner Bros.' parent company WarnerMedia merged to become Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), led by president and CEO David Zaslav. The new company was expected to restructure DC Entertainment and Zaslav began searching for an equivalent to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige to lead the new subsidiary.[12] Writer/director James Gunn and producer Peter Safran were announced as the co-CEOs of the newly formed DC Studios at the end of October 2022.[13] A week after starting their new roles, the pair were developing an eight-to-ten-year plan for a new DC Universe (DCU) that would be a "soft reboot" of the DCEU.[14][15][16]

Development edit

On January 31, Gunn and Safran unveiled the first projects from their DCU slate, which begins with Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. The fifth television series in the slate was Booster Gold, a new take on the character that they described as an "outright comedy" series set in the DCU.[1]

Release edit

Booster Gold is scheduled to be released on the streaming service Max, the successor to HBO Max. It will be part of the DCU's Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.[1][additional citation(s) needed]
