Blade is an upcoming American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it is intended to be the 38th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and a reboot of the Blade film series. The film is being directed by Yann Demange, written by Michael Starrbury, Nic Pizzolatto, and Michael Green, and stars Mahershala Ali in the title role.

Marvel Studios began developing a new Blade film by May 2013, after the rights for the character returned to the studio following the earlier New Line Cinema franchise. Ali discussed starring in a new take on the character in 2016, before approaching Marvel Studios with his idea in February 2019. The film was officially announced that July along with Ali's casting. Stacy Osei-Kuffour was hired as writer in February 2021, and Bassam Tariq joined as director by that September, but he left a year later due to the film's production shifts and creative differences. Demange and Starrbury took over in November 2022, Pizzolatto joined in April 2023, and Green was writing a new script by that November. Filming is scheduled to begin in mid-2024 in Mexico; it is also expected to occur at Trilith Studios and Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta, Georgia, as well as in the United Kingdom, Cleveland, New Orleans, and Morocco.

Blade is scheduled to be released in the United States on November 7, 2025, as a part of Phase Six of the MCU.

Cast edit

Additionally, Delroy Lindo and Mia Goth have been cast in undisclosed roles.[3][4]

Development edit

At the San Diego Comic-Con in July 2011, Marvel Entertainment's chief creative officer (CCO) Joe Quesada confirmed that Marvel Studios had re-acquired the film rights to the character Blade from New Line Cinema, which previously produced a successful film franchise starring Wesley Snipes as the character.[5] Marvel had a working script for a new Blade film from its in-house writing program by May 2013.[6] In July 2015, Snipes said he hoped to reprise the role in any future film and had discussed this with Marvel.[7] After hearing of a potential Blade remake, actor Mahershala Ali had discussions about it with Marvel starting at the end of September 2016, on the same day the first season of Marvel Television's Netflix series Luke Cage released;[8][9] Ali had previously portrayed Cornell "Cottonmouth" Stokes in that series.[2] Marvel's television division wanted to develop Blade as a new series,[8][10] and Ali was drawn to the role as a fan of Snipes' darker portrayal. He felt that tone would work for a new film after superhero films made since Snipes' films had become lighter in tone.[8][9] The next month, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed that there had been discussions regarding featuring the character in a Netflix series, but said there were no immediate plans to do so.[11] In June 2017, Feige reiterated that the character would join the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) at some point, calling him a "legacy character" and noting how the New Line films had proven that lesser-known comic book characters could feature in successful films.[12] In August 2018, Snipes said he had continued to discuss the character with Marvel for over two years and there were two potential projects in development for the character.[13]

Star Mahershala Ali announcing Blade at the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con

Shortly after Ali won Best Supporting Actor at the 91st Academy Awards in February 2019 for his role in Green Book (2018), the actor contacted Marvel Studios and pitched the idea of a new Blade film that he would star in.[2] Feige announced such a film, with Ali attached to star, at Marvel Studios' San Diego Comic-Con panel that July.[1][14] Feige said the project was moving forward because of Ali's interest and it would be part of a future "phase" of the MCU rather than the just announced Phase Four.[15][16] Snipes was surprised by the announcement but said, "Such is the 'business' of 'entertainment!'" He congratulated Ali on the casting and said he would always be a fan of Marvel Studios and the MCU.[17] Active development on the film did not begin until mid-2020,[18] and the studio began searching for a writer-director to lead the project in late 2020.[19] Marvel Studios executive Eric Carroll was producing the film alongside Feige.[20] At the end of September, Ali confirmed that the film would have a darker tone than previous MCU films.[8][9] By October, Marvel Studios were looking to hire a separate writer and director, and began looking for a writer first.[19][21] The studio hoped to assemble a primarily Black cast and crew to work on the film.[21]

Feige said in December 2020 that updates on the film would be given soon.[22] Stacy Osei-Kuffour was hired to write the screenplay in February 2021 after a six-month "meticulous search" that Ali was directly involved in. Only Black writers were seriously considered for the film, which Borys Kit of The Hollywood Reporter felt was a reflection of Marvel Studios' commitment to diversity (especially for projects featuring non-white characters).[23] Later that month, Feige was asked if any future Marvel Studios films would be R-rated, with many fans hoping that Blade would receive that rating. Feige said only Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) would be R-rated due to the previous films in that franchise having already established that rating and tone. He said the studio otherwise hoped to create content that worked for both children and adults, and the PG-13 rating and tone they had been using had not prevented them from telling the kinds of stories they wanted to tell.[24] Filming was set to begin in September 2021,[25][26][27] but by May 2021 it was pushed back to a July 2022 start to allow Marvel Studios to continue working on the script.[27]

From March to June 2021, Marvel Studios met with a shortlist of possible directors,[19] focusing their search on Black filmmakers such as Steven Caple Jr., J. D. Dillard, Regina King, and Shaka King.[27] Albert Hughes was in talks with Marvel Studios about directing the film, but left after disagreeing with the studio's approach.[28] Several directors were chosen to give final presentations during this time, and Bassam Tariq "won all parties over" with his vision for the film. Tariq was in final talks to direct the film by the end of July,[19] and had been hired by the start of September.[29][30] Tariq said the film would not be "boxed in" by adapting comic book elements since the character has an evolving canon.[29] Ali makes an uncredited voice cameo as Blade in the post-credits scene of the Phase Four film Eternals, released in November 2021, in which he contacts Dane Whitman (portrayed by Kit Harington) regarding the Ebony Blade.[31]

Pre-production edit

Delroy Lindo was cast in an undisclosed role in late November 2021.[3] The producers had wanted to cast Lindo in that role from the beginning, but they took their time casting another major role in the film which became "one of the more highly coveted parts in Hollywood". Feige, Tariq, and other executives met with "dozens of up-and-coming actors" for the role and Aaron Pierre, who impressed the creatives, became the frontrunner in February 2022. Pierre joined the cast by the end of the month, in what was described as a leading role.[32][33] In January 2022, Eternals visual effects supervisor Stephane Ceretti said that his assistant supervisor on that film Mårten Larsson would serve as the supervisor for Blade "very soon", and provided him with the design for the Ebony Blade to use in Blade for a larger capacity.[34] Production designer Stefania Cella had begun working on the film by the end of March, after previously working on the Marvel Studios series Moon Knight (2022) and the Sony's Spider-Man Universe (SSU) film Morbius (2022).[35] Pre-production work was starting in Atlanta between mid-June and mid-July,[36] when filming was set to begin in October 2022,[37] and Milan Ray was reported to have been cast as Blade's daughter.[38][39] At the 2022 San Diego Comic-Con, it was announced that the film would be released on November 3, 2023, as a part of Phase Five of the MCU, and that filming would begin in October.[40] In August, Ruth E. Carter joined as the costume designer, after previously working on the MCU films Black Panther (2018) and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022).[41]

At the end of September 2022, Tariq stepped down as director due to further delays in the production schedule,[42] and creative differences between Tariq and Marvel Studios.[43] In separate statements, Marvel Studios and Tariq said they both appreciated their work together on the film, and that Tariq would remain an executive producer. The studio had begun searching for a new director by that point, while Beau DeMayo, a writer for Moon Knight and head writer for the Marvel Studios series X-Men '97 (2024), was rewriting the script. Filming had been set to begin in November by then.[42] Jeff Sneider of Above the Line reported that Ali was frustrated with some of the film's development, including the state of the script and the fact that Feige was said to be "spread too thin" with his commitments to the wider MCU.[44] Marvel Studios temporarily suspended production work being done in Atlanta in early October while they continued to search for a new director, with production expected to resume in early 2023,[45] which resulted in the film's release date being delayed to September 6, 2024,[46] as the last film in Phase Five.[47] /Film reported that Ali would have a major involvement in the film's new direction and that further rewrites could occur at the actor's request.[48] Marvel Studios met with filmmakers for several weeks, with Yann Demange's pitch exciting executives,[49] and he was hired to direct in November, when Michael Starrbury was hired to perform a page-one rewrite. Ali was involved in hiring Starrbury.[43]

Demange was working on pre-production in Atlanta by February 2023,[50] shortly before filming was set to begin that May.[51][52] By the end of March 2023, Sneider further reported that the script had been made "leaner", with some elements that were deemed extraneous being removed such as a planned tie-in to Eternals with Harington returning as Dane Whitman;[53] Harington later said a misunderstanding had led to rumors about his involvement in the film, but this had never been planned.[54] Sneider also reported that some roles were potentially being recast at that time, including Blade's daughter.[53] Starrbury's script was reported to be darker than most MCU films.[47] Mia Goth joined the cast in an undisclosed role in April,[4] and Nic Pizzolatto joined later that month to work on the film's script from Starrbury's draft. Ali previously worked with Pizzolatto while starring in the third season of the series True Detective (2019).[52] Filming had then been set to begin in June, before Marvel shut down pre-production in early May as Pizzolatto did not have adequate time to work on the script before the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike. They planned to resume production after the strike concluded.[55] In June, the film's release was pushed back to February 14, 2025.[56] The writers' strike ended in late September.[57]

Michael Green was hired by November 2023 to write a new draft following reports that Ali was prepared to exit over issues with the script. Tatiana Siegel at Variety reported that a prior script version focused on a female lead and included "life lessons", with Blade being relegated to the fourth lead role.[58] Starrbury said this report was not reflective of the draft he worked on before the strike, explaining that Blade had been in "almost every scene".[59] Siegel also noted speculation that Marvel Studios was looking to have a budget under $100 million for the film, which would be a deviation from the studio's typically higher spending,[58] but Sneider soon reported that the film would have a similar budget to other MCU films. Sneider also reported that the Marvel Studios executive overseeing Blade was no longer involved with the film, or the studio, due to issues with the film's production and script, including a draft by Osei-Kuffor.[60] Demange said Marvel now planned for the film to receive an R-rating, and was excited to portray Ali with a ruthlessness and roughness as the character.[61] When the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike ended in early November, the film's release was pushed back to November 7, 2025,[62] making it part of the franchise's Phase Six slate.[63]

Ali said in December 2023 that he felt encouraged with the film's direction and creative team, and he believed they would be resuming work shortly.[64] The Hollywood Reporter noted in January 2024 that Pierre was cast before the film's production limbo and it was unclear if he remained involved,[33] while Sneider reported the following month that the script had come to fruition and Ali was comfortable moving forward, debunking rumors that he had exited the film.[65] Sneider and The Hollywood Reporter believed Blade would be delayed from its November 2025 release, feeling it was unlikely Marvel Studios would release four films in 2025 amidst Disney's larger plans to scale back content.[65][66] This speculation was furthered by Disney CEO Bob Iger not mentioning the film during an earnings call where he mentioned Marvel's other 2025 releases.[66] Pierre confirmed his departure the following month, citing the film's creative changes since his casting.[67] Filming was then reportedly set to begin in late 2024 in the United Kingdom.[68] In April, Sneider reported that filming would begin in Mexico in mid-2024 and that the script had been revised to featuring Ali "just killing vampires".[69]

Filming edit

Filming was originally expected to begin in September 2021, before it was delayed to a start in July 2022,[27] at Trilith Studios in Atlanta.[70][71] It was then delayed to start on October 5,[72][40] and then in November 2022,[42] when it would have concluded by January 28, 2023.[72] The Cleveland portion at that time was scheduled to film from November 14 to 22, 2022.[73][74] Filming was further delayed to start in late May 2023,[51][52] and then in June,[75][55] before another delay caused by the writers' strike.[55]

Principal photography is scheduled to begin in late 2024 in the United Kingdom,[68] under the working title Perfect Imprints,[36] with Matthew Libatique serving as the cinematographer.[76] Filming was also expected to occur at Trilith Studios and Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta,[37][77] as well as in Cleveland,[74] New Orleans, and Morocco.[37]

Release edit

Blade is scheduled to be released in the United States on November 7, 2025.[62] It was previously scheduled for November 3, 2023,[40] September 6, 2024,[46] and then February 14, 2025.[56] It will be a part of Phase Six of the MCU.[63]
