On March 2006, two Swedish construction workers convicted of espionage, Stefan Johansson and Jari Hjortmar were arrested by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) accused of "taking pictures of military buildings and telecommunications equipment" at Qeshm Island.[1] They were detained in Iran for one year before being released.[2]

Stefan Johansson and Jari Hjortmar, two Swedish construction workers,[3][4] were arrested by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) accused of "taking pictures of military buildings and telecommunications equipment" at Qeshm Island on March 2006.[5] They were sentenced to two years in prison on charges of espionage by the Islamic Revolutionary Court.[6][7]
Released edit
One April 17, 2007, Johansson and Hjortmar were pardoned and released in what Iranian officials called an act of good will. Johansson said at Stockholm Arlanda Airport:[8][9]
"Now we're just going to take it easy and spend time with our families."[10]
Reactions edit
Iranian Justice Minister Jamal Karimi-Rad said: "last May that the two had been convicted of photographing military installations and sentenced to three years in prison apiece.[11]
Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini said that the sentence had been only two years.[11] According by Islamic Republic News Agency, Hosseini said: "Iran had decided to release the men early to conform with the government’s humanitarian policy.”[12]
