Draft:2029 European Parliament election

The 2029 European Parliament election is planned to be held to replace the candidates elected at the 2024 European Parliament election.

A 2023 study by the Institut Jacques Delors examined what role the European party system might play in the forthcoming election, including the effects of proposed reforms such as a better functioning Spitzenkandidaten system, transnational lists, and reducing the size of the parliament.[1]

In 2023, the German parliament was considering a law that would introduce an electoral threshold for European parliament elections that would come into effect in time for the 2029 election. A previous threshold of 5 percent had been ruled unconstitutional.[2][3][4] The threshold could make it harder for smaller parties such as die Partei, Volt Germany, and Human Environment Animal Protection to obtain representation.[5]
