The 2025 Cambridgeshire and Peterborough mayoral election will be held on the 2nd of May 2025 to elect the mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. It is the first mayoral election to take place since England and Wales began using first past the post to elect mayors.

Background edit

The mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough serves as the directly elected leader of the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority. The mayor has power over investment directly to the combined authority from the government of £20 million a year for 30 years from 2017. The mayor does not incorporate the Cambridgeshire Police and Crime Commissioner into the post. The mayor since 2021 has been Nik Johnson who won with 51.3% of the vote after the transfer votes^[1].

Electoral System edit

The election will use the voting system of first past the post to elect the mayor, in this system the candidate with the most votes wins. The Electoral Reform Society described the move towards first past the post as one lowering the bar for policitians and thus damaging British democracy^[2].
