The 2023 Democrats 66 leadership election will determine the lead candidate of the Democrats 66 (D66) for the 2023 Dutch general election, and therefore the party's next political leader. The election was triggered by Sigrid Kaag's announcement on 13 July 2023 that she would step down as party leader, following the collapse of the fourth Rutte cabinet on 7 July 2023.[1][2][3]
Nominations for candidates opened on 18 July 2023 and will close on 27 July at 12:00 p.m. (CEST).[4] Candidates need the support of at least 1% of eligible voters (247 members) to stand in the election.[4] The election is set to be held from 2 to 9 August 2023.[4] The result will be announced on 12 August 2023.[4]
Background edit
The fourth Rutte cabinet collapsed on 7 July 2023 after the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD), Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA), Democrats 66 (D66), and the Christian Union (CU) failed to agree on a proposed limitation of family reunification for refugees fleeing armed conflict.[5] Prime Minister Mark Rutte called the disagreements between coalition partners "irreconciliable", and informed King Willem-Alexander that his entire cabinet would be resigning.[5] As a result of the government crisis, the House of Representatives is set to be dissolved, with early general elections scheduled to be held on 22 November 2023.[6]
On 13 July 2023, Sigrid Kaag announced in an interview in Trouw that she would not lead D66 into the snap election and that she would retire from politics, citing the impact of the "hate, intimidation and threats" on her family as the main reason for her departure.[7][8][9]
