Draft:2023 Bellevue, Washington vehicular homicide incident

In September 2023, a incident of vehicular homicide occurred in Bellevue, Washington, with Chinese nationals as the perpetrator and the victim. Bellevue police launched an international search for this suspect after the perpetrator fled the country.[1]

Details edit

On Sept. 30, 2023, Ye was driving on 112th Avenue NE toward Highway 520 with Liu in the passenger seat when she was going over 90 mph and lost control of the car shortly before 4 a.m. The car went airborne, striking several objects and landed upside down, and Liu died from his injuries at the scene.[2]

On Oct. 6, Ye was discharged from the hospital. On Oct. 9, she had an acquaintance drive her to Vancouver, B.C., where she got on a flight to China. The warrant was entered into the system on Oct. 10, the day she flew out of Canada.[2]

Perpetrators and victims edit

The perpetrators of the September 30 incident was Ting "Jennie" Ye (叶婷 yè tíng). Ye is from China and was in the area on a work visa.[1] Victim of the incident, Yabao "Louis" Liu, 27, is also from China and was in the area working for a Chinese company.[2][3]

Trials edit

Police said detectives were still trying to develop probable cause for Ye’s arrest when she fled the country.

King County prosecutors filed the case on Oct. 9 and requested Ye be held on $2 million bail. The judge issued a bench warrant for Ye’s arrest on Oct. 23, when she did not appear for her arraignment.[2] However, because there is not an extradition treaty between China and the United States, the police will need help from federal partners to take action.
