Dinosaur Island is an animatronic dinosaur themed attraction for children located at Sea World on the Gold Coast, Australia. The attraction was manufactured by Canadian company Dinosaurs Unearthed and opened on 16 June 2012.[1]
History
Dinosaur Island was announced via Sea World's Facebook page on 3 May 2012.[2] This followed several visual clues as to what the new attraction might be.[3][4] Construction began almost immediately with the closure of the area surrounding the Rescue Point Lighthouse. In late May, the dinosaurs began to arrive.[5] On 16 June 2012, the attraction officially opened to the public.[1][6] The exhibit is expected to close following the June/July holidays in 2013.[1]
Exhibit
The Dinosaur Island exhibit is split into two sections.[7] The main part of Dinosaur Island is where a number of the larger animatronics are located.[7] There are 14 animatronics in this area including an 18-metre (59 ft) long Tyrannosaurus rex.[8] Some of the animatronics feature control panels which allow guests to control their movement.[9] This section is located along the edge of the Sea World Lake in the area surrounding the Rescue Point Lighthouse.[7] The second part of the exhibit, the Dinosaur Island Discovery Centre, is an indoor exhibit located near the Sea World Monorail System's main station and Penguin Encounter.[7][7] This section is also home to a merchandise shop, the Dinosaur Store.[10]
