Dada Bhagwan (November 7, 1908 – January 2, 1988), born as Ambalal Muljibhai (A.M.) Patel, also known as Dadashri, is a revered Spiritual Master leader from whom a new spiritual movement emerged.
Biography
Ambalal Patel was born at Tarsali, Gujarat, India.
From an early age, Dadashri exhibited unique spiritual characteristics, some of which were:
- At age 13, in Mathematics class, he deduced that, just as zero was the common indivisible factor within all numbers, the divine was the common indivisible factor within all living beings.
- A natural contrarian, Dadashri would not allow himself to be dictated by social norms, cultural biases, or unexamined beliefs.
- He insisted upon ultimate Self-authority in all his pursuits, whether worldly and spiritual.
As he grew older, he maintained an avid priority of spiritual purpose. Even as he entered into marital life and later into a business partnership, he experienced no interest or satisfaction in worldly matters. Instead, he remained one-pointedly focused on his search for eternal truth and Self-realization. He read extensively, contemplated scriptures of world religion, and was particularly inspired by the writings of Shrimad Rajchandra.
Dadashri possessed a unique ability to maintain his inner spiritual focus even while actively engaged in worldly life. Some examples of this are:
- He ran his contracting business with utmost integrity and ethics – an exceptional trait given the prevalent corruption of the industry in his time.
- He paid himself the minimum salary possible, choosing instead to live simply and to leave profits for the benefit of his business partner.
- He maintained all personal and business relationships fastidiously – and always with loving reverence. Over the course of his life, it is reported that he had no interpersonal conflicts – including with his wife or business partner.
Manifestation of Gnan
In 1958, Gnan Sakshatkar, absolute manifestation of Self-knowledge, occurred spontaneously within him.
Dadashri’s awakening is described as follows:
“Dada Bhagwan expressed naturally within…Ambalal Muljibhai[1] ….This was the culmination of spiritual seeking and efforts of many previous lives. The expression of the spiritual knowledge was complete and spontaneous, and this science has come to be known as Akram Vignan[2] (a direct path to attain Atma Gnan,[3]Self-realization and moksha, liberation from the cycle of birth and death).
After Dadashri’s awakening, those close to him observed an extraordinary presence within. His nephew, who addressed him as “Dada” (the traditional Gujarati term for “Grandfather”) repeatedly proclaimed, “He has become a Bhagwan,” divine embodiment. As a result of this, people eventually combined the two, addressing him as “Dada Bhagwan,” grandfatherly divine embodiment.
From his awakening, Dadashri attained siddhis, supernatural abilities, to raise seekers to the level of his own spiritual state. However, for four years, Dadashri remained silent about this, resting in the quietude of an ego-less inner state. Finally, after repeated requests by those close to him, he began to offer satsang, spiritual discourse, and Gnan Vidhi,[4] ceremony of Self-knowledge.
Dadashri’s satsangs were impromptu – offered in any location, at any time of the day or night. Conducted primarily in a question-answer format, Dadashri’s satsang transcripts have been compiled by subject into numerous topic-based books.
In Gnan Vidhi, which Dadashri defined as an “experiment to separate the Self from the non-self,” he was able to consistently awaken his own spiritual state within seekers in a mere 2 hours. He gave a personal guarantee that anyone attending Gnan Vidhi would permanently attain Atma Gnan, Self-realization.[5][6]
Until his samadhi maran,[7] passing with spiritual awareness in 1988, Dadashri traveled within India. In 1982 Dadabhagwan made his first trip to the USA to pass on the knowledge of Akram Vignan to enlighten the lives of Indians as well as Americans. He also travelled to the UK and East Africa & South Africa to pass on his spiritual knowledge of the Self, offering satsang and Gnan Vidhi ceremonies. Proclaiming that “there must be no business in spirituality,” he did so entirely at his own expense.
Dadashri predicted that Akram Vignan would remain accessible through his successors for approximately 18,000 years. Before passing, he blessed his closest disciples with the siddhis required to offer Gnan Vidhi. Since then, Dr. Niruma Amin [8] (who met Dada in 1968), carried on the knowledge of Akram Vignan to enlighten the lives of people. Pujya Niruma continued visiting the USA, UK, Africa and expanded to Europe, Asia, Muscat, UAE, New Zealand and Australia.
On 19 March 2006 with the passing of Pujya Niruma, Deepakbhai Desai [9][10] (Pujyashree Deepakbhai) the current living Atma Gnani(spiritual Master) who was given Special Spiritual Blessings by Param Puja Dada Bhagwan took over knowledge of Akram Vignan and continues enlightening the lives of people through Live Satsangs (Spiritual discourses).Pujyashree Deepakbhai has officiated over a burgeoning spiritual community (Simandhar City, Gujarat, India), celibate male and female groups….[11] , teen and children’s programs. He travels round the Globe following the same footsteps of Pujya Niruma and Dada Bhagwan to awaken sincere seekers to Self-realization and moksha.
Kramic Path vs Akram Vignan
There are two paths to liberation:
One is the Kramic path in which one has to progress step by step. If one finds satsang (association with people who seek the higher self) one could climb 500 steps but if one finds kusang (company of people without integrity) then one can fall down 5000 steps! The Kramic path is very difficult. It requires penance, renunciation, jaap (incantation) etc., in order to progress. Even then, there are no guarantees that one will reach his destination. The second is the Akram Vignan path, which is a step-less, elevator path. One can progress spiritually even while living with one's wife and children. One can enjoy worldly comforts and still attain final moksha. The grace of the Gnani Purush bestows within you an eternal awareness of the Self. This awareness remains continuously. The awareness of the Pure Soul remains.
The Akram path is without rules which translates literally as “non-step-by-step,” refers to direct attainment of an exalted spiritual stage. The siddhis supporting the emergence of Akram Vignan arose as a consequence of Dada Bhagwan’s awakening in 1958. Any seeker attending Gnan Vidhi ceremony attains Atma Gnan (see Atma Jnana), Self-knowledge, via Akram Vignan, direct path of Self-knowledge.
One can only attain Moksha without rules. When no rules are imposed, one becomes natural. In the Akram path, one maintains dharmadhyan in the relative world and is in shukladhyan, the State of the Self. In this path the external kriya (activity) remains the same like that of an ignorant one, but the entire dhyan-inner mediation changes. No jaaps (incantations) or tups (penance) are required. One experiences moksha without any effort. One receives the fruits of the vision of the Gnani from the Gnani and this brings forth the fruit of liberation. The fruit of service to others, is worldly prosperity.
Science of Akram Vignan, expounded by Dadashri can permanently establish a person in his or her ‘Real Self,’ with permanent happiness.[12]
A.M. Patel, Gnani Purush & Dada Bhagwan
Dadashri explained that, as a result of his awakening, three distinct facets of the Self clarified within. At the gross level, A.M. Patel’s relative self (body-mind complex) remained. At a subtler level was Gnani Purush (see Dadashri’s definition below). Finally, at the subtlest level was what his followers referred to as “Dada Bhagwan,” an absolute divine embodiment.
Dadashri describes these three facets of Self in the following interview-excerpts:
"For whom is “Dada Bhagwan” used?
Dadashri: It is used for Dada Bhagwan, not for me. I am a Gnani Purush…. Dada Bhagwan…is within you too, but is not yet manifest, and here, within me, he is fully manifest and is ready to give results….[13]
What is the real nature of Dada Bhagwan?
Dadashri: He is…one who has no attachment, no ego, and no intellect….[14]
Why do you allow yourself to be addressed as Bhagwan (Godly divine embodiment)?
Dadashri: I, myself, am not God. I too bow to Dada Bhagwan within me. I (as Gnani Purush) am at the level of 356 degrees of spiritual achievement, whereas Dada Bhagwan is at 360 degrees. He is absolute. I lack the four degrees and therefore I too bow down to Dada Bhagwan (within me)."[15]
Simandhar Swami
After Param Pujya Dada Bhagwan awakening, Dadashri Made a direct connection with Lord Simandhar Swami,[16] Dada Bhagwan said that “Simandhar Swami is present now but he is not in our world, He is in another world. I have a connection with Him and the entire world should benefit from this. I am merely a nimit (a medium that is instrumental in a process). I make you do His darshan through ‘Dada Bhagwan’(Pure Soul within you), and it reaches Him. That is why you still have one more birth so that you can go to Simandhar Swami.
Param Pujya Dada Bhagwan said "I have such good relationship with Simandhar Swami,[17] that if you do His darshan as I instruct you, it will reach Him all the way”. Param Pujya Dada Bhagwan said "I ask Him all the questions and He gives me all the answers,to date, hundreds of thousands of questions have been asked and the answers have been given to the world by me".
Simandhar City & Trimandir: Dada’s Vision becomes a Reality
Param Pujya Dada Bhagawan had a wish,
"A city of mahatma's [18] (All whom have achieved self realization) living together would facilitate them in achieving the absolute state with ease. Such a spiritual environment would aid in increasing devotion for Lord Shree Simandhar Swami and for practicing the five aagnas (instructions given after self realization) resulting in their ultimate salvation."
Independent Movie based on Dada Bhagwan
Desperate Endeavors is a movie about Dadashri visiting America in the 1970s, where he touched the lives of Americans and Indians with the science of Akram Vignan.[19]
