Louisiana has a high per capita murder rate, leading all states for 22 consecutive years (1989–2010) according to Bureau of Justice Statistics.[citation needed] Louisiana also has a high incarceration rate.[citation needed] Louisiana averaged 14.2 murders per 100,000, compared to the U.S. average of 6.8 murders per 100,000 from 1989 through 2010.
