Formerly part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Slovenia was combined with other areas in 1918 to form Yugoslavia. After occupation by Italy and Germany in WW2, it was returned to Yugoslavia in 1945. In 1991, Slovenia seceded from the Yugoslav federation and became an independent republic.
