Category talk:Web server software

Latest comment: 17 years ago by Stephen Deken in topic Category cleanup

This category is confusing. The category starts with giving a short introduction to what a web-server is and then it has a number of links to implementations, which is more like articles.

A more appropriate heading is “web-Server implementations”. Use http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XML-RPC_Implementations as a template.

Web server software vs. implementation edit

I think that in this case the word software is more appropriate than the word implementation because there is no specification about how a web server should be designed or implemented whereas XML-RPC has a specification (as any other protocol) and it is implemented as a software library; so it is true that a web server acts like an HTTP server (thus implementing the HTTP protocol) but it has lots of other features that are not even named in some specification.

Category cleanup edit

I've cleaned up this category by removing the J2EE servers and templating systems. This category now only contains web (HTTP) servers as described by the introduction. --Stephen Deken 16:56, 22 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

  • Okay, I've cleaned up this category again by kicking out all of the templating engines and other things that aren't web servers. I guess I'll just keep doing this once a year. --Stephen Deken 17:22, 29 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
