Australian soccer league system

The Australian soccer league system is a series of leagues for association football clubs in Australia. The league system in Australia since 1977 has involved one divisional league controlled by the national body and many leagues run within each state below. Prior to the first A-League season in 2005, the National Soccer League stood from 1977-2004 as the top nation-wide tier above the current state based league systems. The introduction of the National Premier Leagues in 2013 introduced a direct second tier of association football in Australia, underpinning the A-League.[1] The National Premier Leagues is simply a single banner of which divisions (state leagues) operate under. As of 2013, the National Premier Leagues has rebranded 5 of the 9 top state leagues, with the remaining 5 expected to join in 2014.[1] Unlike the English football league system, the Australian league system does not incorporate a full promotion and relegation through the entire tiers.

There are 2 separate nation wide leagues within Australia that are not included in the table: W-League (women's) and A-League National Youth League (youth).
