Ajoy Ghose is an Indian mining engineer. He was twice awarded the Krupinski Medal (1984 and 2006) for his services to mining by the World Mining Congress, was Director of the Indian School of Mines University in Dhanbad, India, and is a past president of the Institution of Engineers (India) and the Mining, Geological and Metallurgical Institute of India.[1] Between 1998 and 2000, he was President of the Federation of Engineering Institutions of South and Central Asia (FEISCA). He received the Professor Jai Krishna Memorial Award of the Indian National Academy of Engineering in 2004 for "research, education, international cooperation in mining and technology diffusion".[2]
Early career
Ghose studied mining engineering at the Indian School of Mines. Following post-graduate training in the United Kingdom, he became a research scientist at the Central Mining Research Station. He became a Professor of Mining Engineering at the age of 28, and Foundation Head of Department of Mining at the Regional Engineering College, Srinagar (now the National Institute of Technology, Srinagar). He spent most of his career as Professor of Mining Engineering at the Indian School of Mines University, and has been a Visiting Professor at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne (UK) and the University of Wollongong (Australia).
Other achievements
He is a Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering,[3] a Foreign Member of the Academy of Mining Sciences of Russia, and an Honorary Life Member of the Polish Association of Mining Engineers. He currently serves as an Adjunct Professor at the Bengal Engineering and Science University, Shibpur and as Director of the Central Mine Planning and Design Institute of India.[4][not in citation given] He is also Editor of the Journal of Mines, Metals and Fuels.[5]
