Advanced Technology Centre Shah Alam

Advanced Technology Centre Shah Alam, also known as ADTECSA or ADTEC Shah Alam, is a public vocational college in a 40 acres (16 ha) land in Kota Kemuning, suburb of Shah Alam, Malaysia. It was founded in 2001 under Jabatan Tenaga Manusia, JTM (Manpower Department), and inaugurated by the then Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi in 2003. It is one of eight ADTECs in Malaysia. As of 2023, ADTEC Shah Alam offers nine full-time courses. ADTEC Shah Alam is the first and only TVET government based training institution to have the Aircraft Maintenance Course throughout Malaysia.[1][2][3]

ADTEC Shah Alam is one of the training institutions under the Department of Manpower (JTM), which was established in 2001 to develop a competent, skilled workforce through high-tech training in line with the government's vision to become a developed country by 2020. Through the Seventh Malaysia Plan (RMK 7), ADTEC Shah Alam was built in the area of Bukit Kemuning industrial site on a 40-acre (16 ha)site, and construction was completed fully in 2000. In July 2001, ADTEC Shah Alam started operations by making the first intake of 107 students. Y. A. B. Dato' Seri Abdullah bin Hj. Ahmad Badawi as the Deputy Prime Minister at the time, officiated ADTEC Shah Alam on January 11, 2003. Aircraft maintenance is a field introduced in 2006 to eight existing fields to meet the high manpower needs with the collaboration of National Aerospace and Defense Industries (NADI).[4]

In July 2011, this certificate program was upgraded to a Diploma in Aircraft Maintenance Technology for recruitment. Apart from that, through the Malaysia-Japan Automotive Industry Co-Operation Program (MAJAICO), which is an initiative under the Malaysia-Japan Economic Cooperation Agreement signed in July 2006, JTM is responsible for handling the MAJAICO B project, which is a collaboration between the Ministry of Human Resources (KSM) and the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO). MAJAICO B project carried out by JTM and Nissan This aims to carry out training activities for lecturers at training institutions as well as expand existing skills to a higher level to train the workforce industry. As of December 2018, ADTEC Shah Alam has released a total of 4,672 graduates in various skill areas, including Welding, Manufacturing (Machining), Quality assurance, computers (systems), refrigeration and air conditioning, Mechatronics, Electronics, power electronics, and Aircraft maintenance. As of 2023, ADTEC Shah Alam graduates have entered the industrial market both domestically and also abroad.[5]

Campus and facilities edit

ADTEC has blocks of buildings that are designed for either workshops, laboratories, or classrooms. It also houses two aircraft hangars. The academic building block is different depending on the courses the student has selected. There are also computer laboratories for ICT and computer aided design subjects are situated.[6] The institute is well equipped with modern training facilities worth mechatronics, car assembly lines, and a workshop. The aircraft hangar also houses different aircraft, such as the Sikorsky, Pilatus PC-7 and Skyhawk.[7] There is a main hall, computer laboratories, a surau that is open to the public, a cafeteria, a dining hall, an auditorium with a capacity of 300, a kiosk, and a library. Certain classrooms are also provided with air-conditioners. They also have sports facilities such as rugby and basketball fields and courts for volleyball, futsal, tennis, takraw and badminton. ADTEC has three main buildings for accommodation for students. There is also accommodation for lecturers, staff, guests, and the director. Male students typically live in a room for two or three. Two blocks are dedicated to male students and one to females. The student hostels are provided with televisions, satellite channel service, washing machines, water coolers and heaters, and study rooms. Wi-Fi is also available. Transportation at ADTEC Shah Alam includes buses, lorry, vans, and cars.

There are several main faculties in ADTEC Shah Alam, including mechanical and servicing, electrical and electronics, and machining. ADTEC Shah Alam curriculum bias is about 30–40% of theory and 60–70% of practical.[8] Today, ADTEC Shah Alam includes general subjects: Mathematics and science, English, ICT, CAD and Islamic/moral studies, along with core subjects to provide the students with more career potential. Numerous courses[9] are offered at ADTECSA, and all of them emphasize technical fields.

At the end of each semester, ADTEC Shah Alam will run an evaluation by taking feedbacks from students regarding their lecturers, training equipments, accommodation facilities, reference material, syllabi, etc. ADTEC Shah Alam is providing short-term classes too. They are for non-students such as professional workers in the industry, university lecturers and army men (normally from TUDM) who are looking for extra training. They also frequently organize educational events.

Certifications edit

Technicians with certifications from ADTEC Shah Alam are the most sought-after labor by companies in Malaysia. As of 2019, ADTEC prepares their students for the Industrial Revolution 4.0.[10] Certificates for ADTEC Shah Alam graduates include Level 3 Sijil Kemahiran Malaysia and Level 4 Diploma Kemahiran Malaysia, DKM (Malaysia Skills Diploma). Both certificates are issued by Jabatan Pembangunan Kemahiran, JPK (Skills Development Department), which is under the same ministry as JTM. They are the top certifications in Malaysian vocational education standards. ADTEC Shah Alam is also the only institute in Malaysia that provides a three-in-one course for aircraft maintenance, providing SKM, diplomas, and assistance for CAAM License.[11]

Aircraft Maintenance Training edit

ADTEC Shah Alam's Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Technology program is a three-year diploma program designed to prepare individuals for a career in aircraft maintenance. The program adheres to the guidelines set forth by the Civil Aviation Authority Malaysia (CAAM) Part 66 Category A syllabus and covers a comprehensive range of topics, including airframe structures and systems, aircraft engines and systems, avionics and electrical systems, and aircraft maintenance documentation and procedures. Students in the program gain hands-on experience through extensive training in ADTEC Shah Alam's state-of-the-art workshops and laboratories. They also have the opportunity to gain valuable industry exposure through internships, on-the-job training and field visits to leading aircraft maintenance organizations and exhibitions.

Upon successful completion of the program, graduates are awarded a Diploma in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Technology from ADTEC Shah Alam and a Malaysian Skills Diploma from the Department of Skill Development Malaysia and JTM. The institution will also provide assistance to apply for the Aircraft Maintenance License (Technician Category A1/A2/A3/A4) in accordance with CAAM.[12]

Activities and students edit

The institute is actively participating in skills and innovation competitions, including PKM, CITEC, ITEX, and the WorldSkills Competition. Students activities also include sports other than technical activities, such as rugby, tennis, volleyball, badminton, basketball, takraw, futsal, etc. The institute regularly conducts sporting events, for instance, the tournament between courses and player selection to represent the institute. Other activities include charity runs, marching, and orchestra.[13][14][15]

Students Representative Council edit

Majlis Perwakilan Pelajar (Students Representative Council) of ADTEC Shah Alam strives for student rights and acts as a middle person between students and administration. They are voted on by other students each semester. The council, led by a diploma student, will assist the institute in various areas with permission by the faculty and director.

Rivalry with ILPKL edit

A college rivalry between ADTECSA and ILPKL is well known among students, given the proximity of the two institutes. They compete in marching competitions and many athletic events as well as in training and innovation capabilities.

Graduates edit

ADTEC Shah Alam assists postgraduates in finding suitable employers should they require assistance. ADTEC Shah Alam encourages graduates to pursue continuous learning and professional development opportunities, keeping their skills and knowledge up-to-date with industry advancements.[16]
