Sourcing

edit

Hell and than you for your edits. I reverted part of your recent edit here, as you did not provide any sources. Sources are needed for all material on Wikipedia, per WP:VERIFIABLE. I also removed some original research from the Emmer Sewell article. You can't add essay-like personal conclusions, replete with biblical quotes as you did here:

For example, Sewell stacked and arranged cups on her mailbox as a metaphor for Psalm 23:5 "You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies. You honor me by anointing my head with oil. My cup overflows with blessings."(Cite web|url=https://biblehub.com/psalms/23-5.htm%7Ctitle=Psalm 23:5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.|website=biblehub.com|access-date=2019-06-11) Thus, she anoints her mailbox and the mail carries that bring her news will optimism and spiritual blessings.

We do not publish the personal opinions or essay-style writing of editors in articles, per WP:OR. Please avoid adding this kind of material in future. Thanks! ThatMontrealIP (talk) 18:55, 11 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Sourcing

I just reverted your addition of unsourced biography material to Agatha Bennett. If you would like your contribs to "stick", always provide sources.ThatMontrealIP (talk) 17:03, 12 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hello again! Thank you for your excellent edits to the Gee's bend quilters articles. I notice you only using the Souls Grown Deep biographies as a source. It's less than ideal when biography material has a single source. If you can, have a look for further sources that also supports the claims. Thanks!

Welcome!

Hello, Bgourgeot, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Unfortunately, one or more of your recent edits did not conform to Wikipedia's verifiability policy, and may have been removed. Wikipedia articles should refer only to facts and interpretations verified in reliable, reputable print or online sources or in other reliable media. Always provide a reliable source for quotations and for any material that is likely to be challenged, or it may be removed. Wikipedia also has a related policy against including original research in articles.

If you are stuck and looking for help, please see the guide for citing sources or come to the new contributors' help page, where experienced Wikipedians can answer any queries you have! Here are a few other good links for newcomers:

Hello, I'm Zachary Schr. I noticed that you recently removed content from Sam Doyle without adequately explaining why. In the future, it would be helpful to others if you described your changes to Wikipedia with an accurate edit summary. If this was a mistake, don't worry; the removed content has been restored. If you would like to experiment, please use the sandbox. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thanks. Thanks for adding the paid editing templates to the pages you have edited. We might seem officious here at first, but rest assured that your contributions are appreciated. There is a "Wikipedia way" of doing things that can be off-putting at the start. Hang in there, we can always use subject editors like yourself. The many varied policies are what built Wikipedia. Also, feel free to reply on talk pages, as that is what they are for: talking!

RE: Sam Doyle, I located and added many sources. I didn't put back "self-taught" or "outsider", as I tend to agree with you that it's a marginalizing term and not really necessary for someone in so many notable museum collections. I did locate the fact that he dropped out of the Penn school in grade nine, so if someone did add back the "self-taught" term, it would be correct as grades school art education isn't very formative, and he did indeed seem to start his art career very late in life (in his 50s, If I recall the sources correctly). In any case, welcome aboard and do not hesitate to ask for editing help as we all edit collaboratively here. It's coincidental that you came along now, as it was only a few months ago that two other editors and I had an impromptu article creation drive that created many of the recent articles on Gee's Bend quilters! Your assistance in expanding them is most appreciated. ThatMontrealIP (talk) 23:28, 24 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi there, I'm HasteurBot. I just wanted to let you know that Draft:Vernon Burwell, a page you created, has not been edited in 5 months. The Articles for Creation space is not an indefinite storage location for content that is not appropriate for articlespace.

I was pointed at your work and am impressed! Did you know that new articles can get extra attention when presented on the Main page in the DYK (Did you know ...?) section?. It's too late for this one, - "new" means a week, but for the next one, let's go for it. I'll watch Draft:Henry Speller and will nominate. Did you know that you could give your articles an infobox, such as Beethoven, to see some things at a glance? Nice to meet you! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:50, 13 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi thank you! I would like to start including infoboxes, but I'm not sure how to upload photos of the artists. The organization that I work for owns the copyright of most of the photos of the artists, but Wikipedia won't allow me to upload them if they aren't mine, specifically. Any ideas?

@Bgourgeot: I think you could do this: ask your organization if they would agree to release medium or low resolution versions of the images you are talking about. I think your goal (and success) so far has been to create awareness of notable African-American artists by writing articles. Uploading images that are (freely licensed) would be a version of that goal. You would have to do some image editing work to reduce the resolution, then get in touch with WP:OTRS with some kind of proof that the images are freely released. AT at that point you could upload them, and the license would be confirmed by a tag indicating OTRS has the proof.ThatMontrealIP (talk) 00:56, 7 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

The fact was ... that the visual style of African-American artist Henry Speller, who was also an accomplished blues musician, was described as "blues aesthetic"? You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Henry Speller), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Hello, Bgourgeot. • If you have not submitted (or forwarded) a statement of permission, please send it immediately to permissions-en@wikimedia.org and let us know at the OTRS noticeboard that you have done so.

File permission problem with File:JImmy Lee Sudduth.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading File:JImmy Lee Sudduth.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described in section F11 of the criteria for speedy deletion.
