Appropriate external links edit

Somebody -I'm guessing and administrator- has put upo a sign to prohibit the formation of more external links emanating from the South Padre Island, Texas article.

I suggest that several links be formed in order to further complete this article. Most of them are official representatives of the city (commerce, tourism, etc.)

Complying to the notice set in the article, I first mention the links in this discussion page, so a Wikipedia administrator reviews them and may agree to let them be formed on the article itself.

They are:
South Padre Island Travel
South Padre Island Chamber of Commerce
Town of South Padre Island
South Padre Island Spring Break
My Padre
South Padre International Music Festival

Thank you.

I would say the first three would be appropriate external links for this article. The last three would be inappropriate according to WP:EL. Postoak 05:16, 20 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
My opinion is the same as Postoak's on this one. Also please note that the question is also posted to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Texas#South Padre Island... Can I put up Links.3F so hopefully we will get a few more opinions. Johntex\talk 06:51, 20 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
It would be very good if we had more references here (instead of simple external links). I'll see what I can find. - Bevo 21:46, 16 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Causeway edit

A small section about the causeway and its predecessors might be interesting and appropriate. I'll add that when I have a chance.

Geolinks edit

I just love those Geolinks tags! For this article we have {{Geolinks-US-cityscale|26.111935|-97.169587}} - Bevo 22:52, 16 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Town or City? edit

South Padre Island's official website calls itself the "City of South Padre Island" but the government's website calls it a town government. I'm confused which term we should be using in which cases. Ergzay (talk) 17:24, 14 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

This is what I have read on the subject. I am not from Texas, so cannot vouch for the text, but it seems that the designations "city/town/village" in Texas are equally unofficial. Викидим (talk) 18:03, 8 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Many different related locations with unclear separation in concepts edit

There are a bunch of related locations and pages on wikipedia with poor separation between them:

Ergzay (talk) 17:06, 8 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

  • Second and fourth are not exactly geographic locations: the second is a town, the fourth is a national park. The other three indeed describe the different aspects of a previously-single geography. Викидим (talk) 17:57, 8 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Викидим I realize that, but there is substantial overlap in content. Ergzay (talk) 20:15, 8 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
I 100% agree with the need to reduce duplication. Unless Somebody "Notme" Else decides to join the discussion, or some other editors volunteer, the task might be up to you and me. I have preciously little interest in the subject (got here as part of WP:NPP, and there are currently no issues visible related to that project), but - being a team player - I can share some of the load, provided you have a plan of what is to be moved where. In particular, a WP:merge of both N and S island articles into the Padre Island might be tempting and ultimately beneficial to the encyclopedia - but I am not in the mood of shuffling hundreds of incoming links afterwards. Perhaps, we should just let sleeping dogs lie (I'd rather write an article about this saying). Викидим (talk) 22:19, 8 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

I can see why this would be confusing. However, while Padre Island is a naturally occurring barrier island (the world's longest at ca. 110 miles), it has been cut in two by the Mansfeild Channal, a manmade canal. There is no bridge or connection. To travel from the north to the south end of the island (or vice versa), one must return to the mainland and drive nearly 200 miles. The northern two thirds and the southern third are quite different in character too: the north being largely a place of nature, the south being a well-developed tourist destination. While the South Padre Island and North Padre Island articles could potentially be merged into the Padre Island article, there is some justification in having a separate page for each. Alternatively, the South padre Island article is poorly explained (and illustrated) and needs lots of work if it is to stand alone. In any case, I am not up for the task or have the time for either.WiLaFa (talk) 23:57, 8 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
