"Ironic popularity"?

Can we get an actual explanation of what "generating a phenomenon of ironic popularity described as "the Jedward paradox"" means? First, why "ironic"> Because they technically aren't very good but manage to be a very popular act regardless? And an explanation of what exactly is meant by the "Jeward paradox" would be helpful.
