Screw EL

Hi, I understand that the EL link you keep removing is to a commercial site, however it has useful information, especially the images. I believe the link qualifies per WP:ELYES point 3; The images cannot be incorporated into Wikipedia because of copyright issues. The website may be copyrighted but the information can still be put into the article. Bolt Depot does not hold copyrights to the head markings or specs on metric or sae bolts. The info is easily obtained from other sources. --Weetoddid (talk) 20:58, 29 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

You are correct that they don't hold a copyright on the marking layouts, however we can't just copy their images. I'll try and create an SVG version of the images today and incorporate the info into the article so that this becomes a moot point. Wizard191 (talk) 22:13, 29 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Lake Huron article dead external link

Just a quick note to let you know that I restored the dead external link that you removed from the article, and replaced it with a link to a stored version of the site in the Internet archive. Wiki policy recommends that if the information provided by a dead link contains desirable material, this is the preferred maintenance procedure. I restored a blanked section that the editor gave no reason for blanking which had been blanked by the same IP in Feb (and reverted). If the editor had had mentioned WP:PEACOCK in an edit summary or edited out peacock wording I would not have rolled back. Username concern

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia!

I hope not to seem unfriendly or make you feel unwelcome, but I noticed your username, and I am concerned that it might not meet Wikipedia's username policy for the following reason: "Weetoddid" is a corruption of "Retarded", which is inappropriate for an encyclopedia. After you look over that policy, could we discuss that concern here?

I'd appreciate learning your own views, for instance your reasons for wanting this particular name, and what alternative username you might accept that avoids raising this concern.

I don't know how to respond. I assume you are claiming that my username is offensive. Apparently Wikipedia has no standard for what is and isn't offensive. Anyone may take offense at any username they choose to. People who have recently dealt with death may find the username Tombstone offensive or disruptive. It is hard to understand how self deprecating humor would be offensive. I personally find usernames that identify the users religion or contain "eco" offensive and disruptive but have always felt that that was my problem. --Weetoddid (talk) 18:39, 20 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

  • Not one dead person has complained about my username. Note, I never said or implied your username was offensive, I said it was inappropriate. My concern was that since you seem to be mainly reverting vandalism and warning new and anon users, your warning template comes off more as a joke. This leads me to believe it is ineffective and leaves an unprofessional image of Wikipedia. However, I seem to be in the minority over at WP:RFCN (half of them don't even get it), so it seems to be an acceptable moniker for a username. Your revert on American Worcester Sauce and HFCS....

I'd like to discuss your reversion of my edit to the American section of the Worcester Sauce Article. Please see my note in the "High Fructose Corn Syrup" section of the discussion section for a discussion of my rationale. Can you suggest a better way to include this information? A review from respected food critic wood carry more weight than a customer at Amazon. It makes me a little bit nervous to talk too much about L and P in an article about Worcestershire sauce, but the only other major US brand I could find was French's which contained no sweetener at all (no anchovies either). Did you notice the change in sweetener or taste first? I myself much prefer sucrose to HFCS but I'm not sure how much is taste and how much is psychological. With as much controversy as there is about HFCS it may be enough just to mention the change especially if HFCS is wikilinked or referred to as a controversial sweetener (I'm sure that can be sourced). I was able to secure a British bottle of L&P at a small grocery store that caters to British ex-pats, and can confirm that it does not contain HFCS. And yes, the the British version is spicier, noticeably less sweet, and does not leave a sticky aftertaste on the palate. L&P was the original Worcester sauce, so it seams fair to compare the US formulation that contains this controversial ingredient to the "original" formulation that is still sold in Great Britain.

Let me propose a compromise by adding a "Great Britain" section just below the "United States" section with the following:

"The British version from Lea & Perrins Ltd., sold under the name "The Original & Genuine Lea & Perrins Worcestershire Sauce" contains: malt vinegar (from barley), spirit vinegar, molasses, sugar, salt, anchovies, tamarind extract, onions, garlic, spice and flavoring. The main difference between the United States and British versions is the substitution of High Fructose Corn Syrup in the United States for sugar in the original British recipe."

This adds useful information to the article, highlights the main difference between the US and the original British versions, and side-steps value judgments. Would you go along with that?

I noticed that an earlier section titled "Export of Lea and Perrins" already discussed the original British recipe as its main topic. Rather than adding a separate "Great Britain" section, I updated the title of this section to more clearly reflect its topic: the ingredients. I added the discussion of differences of the USA version from the original British recipe in the "USA" section instead, and relabeled the section "Lea and Perrins in the USA". Hi, thx for the notification re lea & perrins steak sauce, I wasn't aware of it. It would appear that steak sauce and brown sauce are not synonymous. If you could explain on Talk:Steak_sauce why you removed some external links I'd be grateful, as (to me) they illustrated the same point. Incidentally, they are not spam! If they don't belong in the article perhaps they belong on the talk page. I've reverted for now, but I'm not precious about those links, they're not important in themselves. Hakluyt bean (talk)

Well the blog I deleted per WP:ELNO point 11, the forum per WP:ELNO point 10, the flickr site per WP:ELNO point 10 or 11, Jacob Fruitfield site per WP:ELNO point 5, and all of them per WP:ELNO point 1. I still can't figure out what point they are supposed to illustrate. If you've got a legitamate point to make why not make it in the article and cite it. Again I bring your attention to WP:ELNO point 1.

Salmonoidei

I have seen a reference here to the suborder Salmonoidei. Wikipedia has articles on the order Salmoniformes and family Salmonidae, but not on the suborder Salmonoidei. I was tempted to create a stub for Salmonoidei, but then thought that I should check with another editor first, since I wasn't certain that the term was still being used. My visit to the dictionary site was because I wanted to see the difference between the terms salmonid and salmonoid. According to that dictionary, salmonid refers to the family and salmonoid to the suborder. If you think it worthwhile and the term Salmonoidei is still recognized, could you please create an article for it? -- Eastmain (talk) 02:03, 22 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

I agree but I'm not adding any new info there just cleaning up. I alphabetized because someone added a second Australia. If the whole section gets deleted I won't care, but someone will just add another one. As for sources I don't where to find them for this info. I just can't stand to look at it the way it was. As you check external links, keep in mind the statement, in bold, at the top of WP:ELNO: "Except for a link to an official page of the article's subject".
