Placing external links sections

An External links section, if any, should always be placed at the end of the article. It should always be spelled that way, never "External Links" or "external links". The term should be used even if there is only one external link.

Question from Stickfigurez000 (15:58, 27 April 2024) edit

Hello! I've never tried or thought about editting a wikipedia article but I was like, why not try it out and see how it works? I saw that under other names for the USA they don't have "the States" which all Europeans, people in the UK, and especially Canadians, exclusively call the US. I just thought, "wouldn't it be fun to add 'the States' since most Americans don't know that we never say the US, or USA and never "America!" haha So ya, that's what brought me here :) --Stickfigurez000 (talk) 15:58, 27 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Why not indeed? Just be sure to follow the rules. There's a lot to learn about how to properly edit on WP, so as not to get your work deleted.
Add "the States" to what exactly? My dad was military and I lived "overseas" for several years and we always referred to "home" as "the states". As far as I know, that's been the practice going back to the world wars. I guess locals picked it up. Since the military is such a small percentage of the population, you are probably right about many not knowing that. But I guess I don't quite get why or where that would be an issue.Jenhawk777 (talk) 16:09, 27 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

The question could be about the lead of United States. I found this 2020 discussion: Talk:United_States/Archive_97#U.S._is_sometimes_referred_to_as_"the_States". "The states" don't seem to be in the article at all atm, but can be found at Names of the United States. Now, have another song: Kicking Ass' song. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 18:13, 27 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Do you know every article in the entire encyclopedia? You astound me. Jenhawk777 (talk) 18:20, 27 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Meh (but thanks). Even I know "The States", and I know Wikipedians, so I figured it probably had been discussed 1 or 12 times before. Now, on behalf of the backup singer in the second song (puncher in the first), I want it to be known that he writes books:Stephen_Fry_bibliography_and_filmography#Books. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 18:28, 27 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Yes he does. I am not a big fan of his, though it is likely a bias on my part. I'm a big fan of you.   Jenhawk777 (talk) 18:37, 27 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Likewise! And it's good to know I have fans, I've been in disputes lately, among other things about The Merchant of Venice if you can believe it. Well of course you can, you also know Wikipedians. Well, the other guy is on a 24h block, we'll see what happens. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 18:50, 27 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Aaaahhh... thank you. If you need me, tell me, I'll be there. Jenhawk777 (talk) 18:56, 27 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
And that went from 24h block to indef with talkpage access revoked. Unless there's socking later, that one can probably be put in the files. So I'm off to my next adventure at [1]. Don't involve yourself, but you might like to watch. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 15:45, 28 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Question from Paulinefowler666 (16:59, 3 May 2024) edit

Hi! I have noticed some Wikipedia pages have lists of celebrities in a table, for example this article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_The_Simpsons_guest_stars_(seasons_1%E2%80%9320)

And some celebrities names will have † next to them to symbolise that the celebrity is dead. For example the table of housemates here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celebrity_Big_Brother_(British_TV_series)_series_20 I was wondering if this is appropriate to put on any sort of article (like the one above) or is this not necessary? I find the idea very helpful, but if it's not needed on every sort of table including celebrities I understand. --Paulinefowler666 (talk) 16:59, 3 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

For lists try this: [3]. For the rest follow this: [4]. Jenhawk777 (talk) 17:15, 3 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
That doesn't mention anything about adding † to lists, I was just wondering if it's okay on any list containing deceased celebrities, to signal that they have since passed away, especially on reality shows etc.
Like on the Big Brother one I linked, there is a † next to those who passed away in the table. But on the Simpsons one, there isn't any next to celebrities that passed from that table. I was wondering if it would be acceptable to add the † to those who passed on any sort of table. It wouldn't make sense to be okay on one form of article but not another. Sorry if this doesn't make a lot of sense, but I like the clarification! Paulinefowler666 (talk) 13:45, 4 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Paulinefowler666, hi! I have no idea what is "best" here (my guess is no firm rule except WP:BLP etc), but you might be able to get a more informed opinion if you ask at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style. Looking at your table, my reaction is "I can see why someone would want to add that, by I wouldn't bother myself." Hope this helps some. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 09:33, 9 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

In the press edit

"But should we not seek the truth? Yes, of course. Nonetheless, as Maher said, like the volunteer writers of Wikipedia, we also must focus on "the best of what we can know right now." That is a statement of intellectual humility, not of relativism. Complex topics and problems do not lend themselves to easy assessments of truth in real time. Through broad sourcing, the Wikipedia model in theory moves us to closer approximations of what is true."

I think that's pretty good. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 09:16, 9 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

We don't have stories on WP. We have research papers that we call pages or articles, but they are research papers like you would write in college. Do the research, go to edit source on the article, and add what you found to an article including the citation to the reference you used, with the page number, where someone else could find what you have written.
