Wikipedia-specific searching with Firefox

In Firefox, the search box has a little pull down menu to allow you to choose which search engine it uses. Several popular search engines come included, but not Wikipedia. However, Firefox provides a page on their website listing more search engines you can add to that menu, including Wikipedia's search. To add Wikipedia, simply go here and click on Wikipedia in the list provided, and you are done. To activate it, pull-down the menu at the search box and click on Wikipedia there. Now you have a second Wikipedia search box. Unlike the search box in Wikipedia's sidebar, which disappears off the screen when you scroll down to read a long page, the Firefox search box always remains on the screen, ready to assist. (Keep in mind, typing Alt+F also places the cursor in the Wikipedia search box.)

Recent changes

• The software used to render SVG files has been updated to a new version, fixing many longstanding bugs in SVG rendering. [1]
• The HTML used to render all headings is being changed to improve accessibility. It was changed last week in some skins (Vector legacy and Minerva). Please test gadgets on your wiki on these skins and report any related problems so that they can be resolved before this change is made in Vector-2022. The developers are still considering the introduction of a Gadget API for adding buttons to section titles if that would be helpful to tool creators, and would appreciate any input you have on that.
• The HTML markup used for citations by Parsoid changed last week. In places where Parsoid previously added the mw-reference-text class, Parsoid now also adds the reference-text class for better compatibility with the legacy parser. More details are available. [2]

Problems

• There was a bug with the Content Translation interface that caused the tools menus to appear in the wrong location. This has now been fixed. [3]

Changes later this week

• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 11 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 12 June. It will be on all wikis from 13 June (calendar). [4][5]
• The new version of MediaWiki includes another change to the HTML markup used for citations: Parsoid will now generate a <span class="mw-cite-backlink"> wrapper for both named and unnamed references for better compatibility with the legacy parser. Interface administrators should verify that gadgets that interact with citations are compatible with the new markup. More details are available. [6]
• On multilingual wikis that use the <translate> system, there is a feature that shows potentially-outdated translations with a pink background until they are updated or confirmed. From this week, confirming translations will be logged, and there is a new user-right that can be required for confirming translations if the community requests it. [7]

WikiProject Kentucky and WikiProject Louisville

Hi, just to let you know, both of the subject projects are subprojects of Wikipedia:WikiProject United States and use its banner. They haven't used their own individual banners since 2011. Because UFC on ESPN: Cannonier vs. Imavov happened in Louisville, it belongs in the Louisville project. The Louisville project is a child of Kentucky's. Hope this makes sense. StefenTower My understanding is that unless the topic/article is about US specifically and not about certain states or cities, then US project will be used, if know then the specific state to be used and that is the reason why the state template existed in the first place. US has the sates in project talk page is different from the rest of the world which all topic of the country integrals of which state or city the topic is resides will be only state as in the country which is the only project template we have in English Wikipedia. As a longtime member of these projects, I'm happy to help explain. Many but not all states and cities in the U.S. operate as subprojects of WP United States and use its banner and have done so since 2011. In these cases, they do not use their own individual banner. And many of these old banners have been deprecated. Just because the WP US banner is used, that doesn't necessarily mean the article involved applies to the whole country, but in an ultimate sense, the event we are covering here did indeed take place in the United States. StefenTower What I read years ago of the banner info might be outdated and if the sub state banner is not longer used then, it should not be in the list for choosing in rater tool. Cassiopeia talk 08:29, 11 June 2024 (UTC)

It is possible that some deprecated project templates in the Rater tool should not be in there. Rater has been known to occasionally have issues with what it lists for selection. As for Kentucky, it appears that Rater continues to include the Kentucky template but only as a wrapper for WP United States. Hello, I have not made many edits so I wanted to bring this to the attention of someone more involved in the community, but the Rise section of the Pope Adeodatus II article is confusingly written and seems like an argument which to my understanding might belong more in the talk section.
