Gen. Westmoreland, recently passed on, was in the USMA class of '36. (or '35) - so I understand. Doing some research on Maj Gen Norman B. Edwards. I understand he was also in the same 1936 class at West Point. Where can I find more information on Norman Edwards? Also, would there be a site available listing the entire individual USMA classes? However, primarily interested in the 1935 and '36 classes. Or, is all of this still considered classified?

Prep Schools

edit

Working on the West point Prep School article; Military Academy Preparatory School. Possibly list the prep schools for the US military academies, maybe bulleted under the full academy?

This article is misnamed

edit

This article is about United States Service academies. There is only on United States Military Academy and it is not appropriate to refer to the other service academies as military academies. Governance of the Service academies is dictated by DoD Directive 1322.22 "Service Academies" of 08/24/1994 which clearly shows that this is the correct term, and that the upper-case S for Service and the lower-case a for academies is correct DoD usage. There probably should be a redirect from United States military academies to this article, but the title of the article should be United States Service academies. I intend to pursue the necessary steps to change this. Ray Trygstad 21:21, 28 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

I agree. Pesco 21:31, 25 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
I agree about the change to the present title, but I disagree strongly regarding the capitalization. The link to the DoD directive was dead, but military writing and government writing in general are notorious for inconsistent typography, poor word usage and grammar, and massive and inconsistent over-capitalization. Government writing should not take precedence over style standards established by broader usage and consistent publishing houses. Holy (talk) 22:28, 11 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

The F. Edward Hébert School of Medicine

edit

The F. Edward Hébert School of Medicine is not a service academy as students in the M.D. program are commissioned officers in the armed forces, and students in the M.D./Ph.D. program are civilians during the Ph.D. studies and are commissioned in the armed forces when they begin their M.D. studies. It is also a graduate education institution while the Service academies are undergraduate. I am updating the article to reflect this. Ray Trygstad 21:21, 28 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Title

edit

The current title uses odd capitalization. It should either be "Service Academies" or "service academies". In fact, since as far as I'm aware the U.S. preceding that isn't part of an official title (like "United States Military Academy") I think the article should be at either: "Service academies in/of the United States" or "Service Academies"/"Service academies". The F. Edward Hébert School of Medicine and other DOD Graduate Institutions

edit

Once again, this paragraph really should come out of this article as the F. Edward Hébert School of Medicine is not a service academy and this does not belong here. Students in the M.D. program are commissioned officers in the armed forces--they are not cadets--and students in the M.D./Ph.D. program are civilians during the Ph.D. studies and are commissioned in the armed forces when they begin their M.D. studies. It is also a graduate education institution while the Service academies are undergraduate. Despite my repeated attempts to remove this paragraph from this article it keeps coming back, so I have thrown in the towel and have added other U.S. DOD graduate schools to this paragraph--but it really should come out. Trust me on this one.Ray Trygstad (talk) 22:10, 20 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

King's Point

edit

Unless something has changed very recently than there are 5 Service Academies, the list as of now excludes USMMA, the Merchant Marine Academy at King's Point, and they are referred to as the five pointed star. --Conor Fallon (talk) 14:06, 25 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

This is correct. This posting failed to include the United States Merchant Marine Academy. I was just at an event yesterday and representatives from all five branches were present. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Laneybri (talkcontribs) 20:24, 28 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
