Inconsistent birth place

edit

If her birth place has been reported as Murshidabad and Behrampur, why are we favouring one over the other in the infobox? Leave it blank, methinks. And the content in the Early life section should make it clear that there is conflicting information about her birth place. Currently there's a footnote, but again, why are we deciding what the truth is and not explaining what the situation is? Convert the footnote to prose. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 19:09, 9 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Cyphoidbomb The point is, if she had said she was born in Murshidabad, she was clearly referring to the district within which the town of Berhampore is situated. This is something many Bengalis habitually do, i.e., refer to the district they belong to since it automatically speaks a lot about the culture they were born into and/or grew up with. Ah, I appreciate the explanation, Oracle of Delhi. Thanks, Cyphoidbomb (talk) 18:33, 10 February 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Cyphoidbomb: Kinda confusing since Murshidabad is a town too and this link would support that. But then again her "website" write Behrampore [1]. I wonder. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 12:47, 13 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Cyphoidbomb Sorry to call without @ Abdullah Al Manjur (talk) 11:30, 16 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Abdullah Al Manjur: This source says Murshidabad. So barring any conflicting evidence, the case is closed, since we do not change content based on what editors believe. Also, try using the {{ping}} template, since "@" doesn't do anything. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 14:48, 16 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Cyphidbomb: oh... Bengali Hindu Family...

"Shreya Ghoshal was born on 12 March 1984 to a Bengali Hindu family" Abdullah Al Manjur (talk) 15:08, 16 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Abdullah Al Manjur: Um, you probably should have read the template instructions. {{ping|User name goes here}}. As for "Bengali Hindu family", I'm not sure what point you're trying to make, and I'm not interested in guessing. Please speak in complete sentences. @Cyphoidbomb: What I am actually saying is I didn’t see that. Abdullah Al Manjur (talk) 15:23, 16 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Cyphoidbomb and I have read the instructions. Abdullah Al Manjur (talk) 15:24, 16 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Adding parents and relatives

edit

Why it’s against Wikipedia’s policy? Can someone please explain. KS 051997 (talk) 02:19, 10 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

@KS 051997: Per the infobox parameters - include parents and/or other relatives only if independently notable and particularly relevant. If they're not public figures or relevant in some other way, adding them is unnecessary. Relationships do not confer notability; see WP:PERSON and WP:NOTINHERITED. - Ïvana (talk) 03:09, 10 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

Sukoon edit

edit

@Vellaonwiki, this section is to discuss the description around Ghoshal's performance on two songs in the album Sukoon. For sake of clarity, the edit I've made is here [2]. The issue revolves around the text "She received critical acclaim for both the songs" with [3] and [4] as the sources. First problem, generalizing from two reviews is not acceptable, especially saying that in Wikipedia's voice. It's clear WP:SYNTH. The ideal source would be a high quality source that IS summarizing reviews and summarizes them as critical acclaim. Second, is the sources have just a couple of lines each and there's nothing in them that supports "critical acclaim" as a summary for either review individually.

Say what the source says is what's needed here. The Firstpost source says "she is better in Tujhe Bhi Chand", but there's no baseline given. Was her other performance considered bad? Great? We don't know, only that one is better. The IndianExpress review has "a lot of dexterity" and "sung like a dream, gently yet valiantly". Again, saying that's critical acclaim is way off the mark. Say what the source says. There's way too much puffery in just this one little line, I'm hoping this isn't a comment theme throughout the article. Ravensfire (talk) 21:10, 18 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

@User:Ravensfire First of all get this thing.. Sukoon is an Indian music album not a film, you can't expect it to have several reviews! And this ain't generalising.. We can switch "critical acclaim" with positive reviews for that.. And talking about my other point literally none of those reviews says her performance in those songs was "Okay".. You're saying "we don't know" and then add your own statement.. Like if we don't know then add what's exactly written in those articles and don't create your own statements.. And you should read the full review, The firstpost critic found her better in Tujhe Bhi Chand but did you read what he wrote about other song? He wrote "Shreya’s interpretation of Momin Khan Momin’s immortal Ghazal Woh jo hum mein tum mein qaraar (Qaraar being the name of the song) tha is laborious. That vocal effortlessness which the intricate words and compositions require is heard" these are his EXACT words.. He literally praised her vocals and called them effortless and called song "laborious" Vellaonwiki (talk) 13:28, 19 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Vellaonwiki yes, actually Wikipedia can and does expect something like that. If there aren't the sources to support something, you CANNOT start using your own judgement on what the sources say. That's called synthesis. If there isn't a source for critical acclaim, you cannot pull that out of thin air. There are multiple other places in this article where that's been done and I'm going to start working through those slowly. Ravensfire (talk) 15:03, 19 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
I've partially reverted your edit. The forbes.com source is a blog (see the /site/ in the url) and there are multiple discussions on WP:RSN to not use the Forbes blogs. This is also a WP:BLP article, so please read WP:BLPSPS for why blogs and other self-published sources are especially avoided here. Ravensfire (talk) 15:11, 19 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

@User:Ravensfire But source clearly praising both the songs like can you read or not huh? Tell me where exactly Subhash K Jha of firstpost found her performances in those songs "Ok".. I want you to quote his words And yeh start "working" but again I'll be there to ask whatever i feel and i better get proper explanations unlike this Vellaonwiki (talk) 15:14, 19 January 2023 (UTC) And yeh talking about Forbes as source @User:Ravensfire, if you're keeping this energy for Shreya Ghoshal then do the same with the wikipedia pages of Deepika Padukone, Alia Bhatt or any leading Indian actress.. All of them are claimed as "One of Highest-paid" based on Forbes list only so i better see you remove that claim from their wikipedia pages as well.. And mind you there are several sources other than forbes listing Shreya as one of highest paid/richest singers but we'll see about thatReply

@Vellaonwiki "can you read or not huh" - don't go down the road of petty insults, it's not helpful and falls into personal attack territory. Praise != critical acclaim. That's a clear POV that's being pushed that is NOT supported by the source. Say what the source says, it's that simple. With two reviews that have a couple of relevant sentences each, you can quickly summarize the points of the review and tell the reader far more useful information.
As for the other articles, WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS. Yes, other articles are bad. And? This page is about this article. Let's focus on this article here, shall we? Ravensfire (talk) 20:01, 19 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
