Shouldn't the 7th Generation be over?

edit

The Xbox 360 was discontinued in April 2016, but the by generation list still indicates it is ongoing (2005-). — Preceding unsigned comment added by BeingofUniverse (talkcontribs) 01:05, 16 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

PlayStation 3 is not discontinued yet. -- ferret (talk) 01:08, 16 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
@Ferret: It has been now (in Japan). Are (exclusive) games still being released for the system? If not, then we have a case to for the 7th gen era to have ended in 2017, if not possibly 2016. ~ Dissident93 (talk) 20:44, 1 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
I would agree that if all three major consoles are known to be discontinued, then the 7th gen is over, being well aware of WP's role in defining the generations. The discontinuation of the 360 and the Wii and Wii U are clear, and if Japan was the only place of manufacture for the PS3, then it's done too. --MASEM (t) 21:16, 1 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
Yep no complaint from me. That's a year old comment at this point. :) -- ferret (talk) 17:27, 3 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Mass Effect 2

edit

Hello,

I have never contributed to this article (and my help is certainly not needed - it's great and I would probably just make it worse!), but as a reader, one thing seemed weird to me. Is there a reason why Mass Effect 2 is not included as a notable game? It's in the List of video games considered the best article, so I would think it deserves mention here, but wasn't sure. My apologies if this has already been discussed.--Ktmartell (talk) 22:35, 11 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Should the Chinese Console "Fuze Tomahawk F1" be added the generation 7 page? Sleyece (talk) 15:49, 21 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Personally, unless it's notable in it's own right and passes GNG, I say nope. -- ferret (talk) 16:03, 21 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Discontinuation dates for PS3 and Wii

edit

I haven't seen any info about WW discontinuation on the internet. Granted I no longer see any seller having new units for either system on sale I just haven't found a link about WW discontinuation dates. ♪♫Alucard 16♫♪ 09:28, 9 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

PS3 is confirmed discontinued in AUS/JP, not sure about NA/EU. Wii claims that the Wii Mini is still in production in Europe, but I am unable to check the sources at this moment to see if that's actually true. Will revisit when I have better access. -- ferret (talk) 11:26, 17 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
I can find no news about the PS3 being discontinued anywhere outside of Japan and New Zealand, so as far as we can tell, the console is still technically in production. The same goes for the Wii Mini, which was still in production in Europe as of October 2013. Until we have official confirmation that the consoles have been discontinued worldwide, the seventh generation has not yet technically ended, and the template should reflect this. – Rhain 15:54, 17 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Rhain: Regarding Wii, Nintendo recorded 110000 units of hardware sold in "Other" (Which includes Europe) region for FY2016 (Which I think actually covers March 2015 to March 2016), with 0 for Americas and Japan. FY2017 recorded 0 units sold in all regions. See their consolidated sales information. As for PS3, obviously Sony has sold some this year so that approach wouldn't work here. -- ferret (talk) 22:28, 18 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Rhain: See new sourcing at PlayStation 3, looks like the book is closed on that one. Unfortunately still haven't found any solid sourcing that Wii is done, other than the lack of new sales in Nintendo's corporate releases. -- ferret (talk) 12:05, 16 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

Yeah for PS3 an anon IP user posted the two sources on the talk page and I looked over them. Kotaku was told by Sony that shipments to the United States was terminated in October 2016 essentially confirming its discontinuation here. This also explains why you can only find PS3 units on the third party market and no retailer is selling new units. CNET which is on the list of reliable sources according to WP:VG/S confirmed Japan was the last territory Sony was still selling new PS3 units until they stopped producing them on May 29, 2017. So that is why I updated PS3 to reflect it being discontinued. I even put a note in the table with the sources on this page. ♪♫Alucard 16♫♪ 02:36, 17 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

GA Request

edit

This article has been tagged with a GA request template. The obvious issue is the update tag. I am not too familiar with this article, but it seems like most have been discontinued so not sure what more in the way of an update is needed. There are other concerns though. The lead is quite big and there is information in it that is not mentioned in the article body. Also I am not so sure on the constant references to price for each console. Do we really need list of USA, Japan and European launch prices. In fact the article is pretty dominated by lists and minute details (Focus criteria). There is a bit of original research in milestone titles as well. AIRcorn (talk) 23:45, 20 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Updating sales of "Best-selling game" in "Handheld game console comparison"

edit

Users were updating the sales numbers for the "Best-selling game" by looking up the latest sales number for the title and changing the "as of" date. This is misleading as another game could have surpassed the listed game in the meantime, meaning the "Best-selling game" designation may not be accurate for the listed "as of" date. The number should only be updated with a source that clearly shows that the game is the best-selling game for the console. 71.191.0.15 (talk) 09:22, 12 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

Interpreting source used for PSP's best-selling game

edit

This source, currently used for PSP's "Best-selling game" on this page, seems to me that it might only be counting U.S. sales, since the time period it's based on starts at March 2005, which is the North American release date for the PSP. Also, the last few words in the article qualify the PSP numbers with "in the United States". Thus, it doesn't seem like a good source for the worldwide best-selling game. I couldn't find a better source though. 71.191.1.193 (talk) 16:51, 15 July 2019 (UTC) (I am the same person as the 71.191.0.15 user who created the previous section.)Reply

Wii a 7th gen?

edit

It’s capabilities are compared to those of PS2 and XBOX 1 and Nintendo Wii cannot render hd 720p so how come it is considered a seventh generation console? Just because it was released in 2012 or something so the date makes it a 7th gen? LOL! If that is a 7th gen then I pity Nintendo players owning such a subpar equipment. Even more when thinking Switch which is merely a low-budget handheld being labeled as 8th gen. F*** me… 83.20.17.166 (talk) 17:16, 21 February 2021 (UTC)W4rb1rdReply

The generation is based on not on equivalency of hardware but on the economics of the marketplace - it competed with the PS3 and Xbox 360 for all purposes. -Masem (t) 17:18, 21 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Are you kidding me? Competed? It’s like a race between Subaru Impreza and Volkswagen Golf. Nope, the hardware determines whether it belongs to said generation and Wii is nowhere near 7th. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.20.17.166 (talk) 17:29, 21 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

We go by reliable sources, as well as the fact that the Wii readily outsold both those units. --Masem (t) 17:44, 21 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

You go by the reliable sources, but do you go with logic as well? According to what you said if Nintendo released their first NES and then let it „compete” with PS3/X360 you’d still call it 7th generation? Sheer nonsense, pal. Generation = hardware, not trends going among customers. No reference to "256-bit generation"?

edit

All previous generations had this PR-based monicker about the mostly arbitrary assignation of "[]-bit generation". Nothin like this for the seventh generation? The eighth-generation should be 512-bit and the current one 1024-bit. The question is whether anyone was actually trying to market those figures in PR materials or in reviews. 5.18.206.22 (talk) 16:34, 1 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

They weren't. That's why they aren't here. After 64-bit (which everything basically still is), these were just fan coined terms that were not widely adopted or used by PR/marketing. -- ferret (talk) 16:42, 1 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Milestone games

edit

So considering that this generation has long since ended, I was wondering when a list of the milestone titles would be compiled for it in the article, considering that all previous generations have these lists as well.
