Caste

edit

User:Strife913 and User:Bevo76 have been very keen on linking this article to the Govigama page. I understand that Sirisena is from a predominantly agricultural background, and it's indeed possible that he is from this caste (although why one would want to bring up caste in this day and age is beyond me). You can't keep doing this, however, unless there is some specific mention (sourced) in the main article about him belonging to this caste. Please feel free to do so; until then, can we please not turn this into an edit war? Jesuschristonacamel (talk) 04:38, 22 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

User:REALClaervoyant now too. Every one of you have been warned, REALClaervoyant in particular, seeing as there's an editor's note in the See Also section. This is now gone to the point of becoming a sincere pain. Jesuschristonacamel (talk) 17:58, 22 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
Don't forget that it takes two to edit war, so all parties involved are subject to being blocked. —C.Fred (talk) 18:12, 22 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
Oh no I haven't forgotten. Just going to forget this article exists and take it off my watchlist. Less headaches and snark. Since this is a page on the incumbent President's opponent at the upcoming elections, vandalism is only going to increase here. Please do direct your helpful comments to them :) Jesuschristonacamel (talk) 21:29, 22 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Portrait

edit

Really could use a portrait, this page, seeing as the individual in question is now quite important. I don't fully grasp the Wikipedia rules on image copyrights, but someone that does should definitely put one in. Jesuschristonacamel (talk) 16:36, 21 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

+1 It is really a pity that no photograph of the main contestant in this important election exists in the Commons. Perhaps someone in the Sinhalese WP could organize one ? --Furfur (talk) 07:24, 8 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
If there's someone in the area who can take a picture of him and then upload it under a free license, problem solved. —C.Fred (talk) 19:01, 8 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Website

edit

Website mentioned in the page is old and is not maintaining anymore. That site was created when he is the health minister and now he has resigned from that post as well. His new official website is www.maithripala.com. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Electionsla (talkcontribs) 15:46, 4 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Page needs an infobox image. Subject is very important as he is the current president of Sri Lanka. Please adhere to Wikipedia's Copyright policies when uploading images. Otherwise it will be speedily deleted.--Chamith (talk) 16:02, 9 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

6th Executive President of Sri Lanka.

edit

6th executive president is more closer to the subject than 7th president because Maithripala Sirisena was elected as the 6th executive president of Sri Lanka by the presidential election 2015. Ariyaratnecol (talk) 00:03, 10 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

presidential trips

edit

Proposed merge of List of presidential trips made by Maithripala Sirisena to Maithripala Sirisena.. No need for a separate list for a single trip, list them under Foreign policy.. GremlinSA 12:37, 17 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

It is a few months into his presidency, the list will soon get longer. I dont think it is much of a problem.--Blackknight12 (talk) 23:26, 25 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

Occupation: "Agriculturist"?

edit

Is there any particular reason why someone that's been involved in politics and activism for most of his adult life is listed as an "agriculturist"? He has a degree in agriculture, but does that make him an agriculturist by profession? There's nothing in the article itself that in any way implies he had anything to do with farming, other than the fact that his father owned some farmland. A lot of these 'Occupation' fields for politicians is redundant, since most Sri Lankan politicians are career politicians, with a few exceptions like Champika Ranawaka or actual practicing lawyers like Sumanthiran.

I propose we blank the 'Occupation' field, since that seems to be the trend followed in other articles like the one over at Jeremy Corbyn, whose past is somewhat similar to Sirisena's. - ක - (talk) 09:23, 6 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

There being no input here, I've gone ahead and assumed there are no disagreements. Profession field has been blanked. Please do NOT undo this edit without providing a source and a justification - ක - (talk) 08:47, 11 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
I recently found this article from [1] and if you scroll to the very bottom you see they have mentioned his occupation as Agriculturist. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nirvanatoday (talkcontribs) 04:41, 9 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

Constitutional Crisis of 2018

edit

Please be warned that some users keep trying to de-link issues referring to the current constitutional crisis kicked off by Sirisena (see 2018_Sri_Lankan_constitutional_crisis. There's also a subtle layer of government propaganda in there (cleaned since then), especially around the 100 days program, especially a bit about being born in the Western Province but originally hailing from the North Central province. This may return.

For information on how this president prefers to be known, please see: http://www.president.gov.lk/president/ //satire

First paragraph: attempts to make a case for his birthplace. Why? Of far greater import would perhaps be his role in the 2018 constitutional crisis, since it marks a President violating the written Constitution under which he was elected. As of last night he has dissolved Parliament: http://www.ft.lk/top-story/Desperate-dissolution/26-666579

100 days program:

"According to Sirisena's team he has enough support in parliament to secure a majority.[129]" "Reports also say he is ready to reinstate Shirani Bandaranayake, the former Chief Justice whose Impeachment Mahinda Rajapaksa engineered two years ago.[11]"

<- old news, 2015. Suggest update, since these things ave already happened.

Also, the part about him publicly disavowing the 100 days program has been removed.

"Sirisena also lifted a ban on news websites, blocked under his predecessor, and enacted a Right to Information bill.[132]"

Sirisena also blocked Facebook on March, 2018, so this case of media freedom increasing, while valid, is not nuanced reads a little bit like pro-Maithripala propaganda. MaithriWiki (talk) 05:54, 10 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

Erroneous quotation mark

edit

Could someone just remove the lone quotation mark?

Sirisena has outlined the general foreign policy goals of his government as being cooperation with all nations, with an emphasis on Asia."[241] [check quotation syntax]

Bertawhen (talk) 18:16, 17 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

Done. There's also an issue in the sentence before: I can't find the quotation in the cited source. —C.Fred (talk) 18:43, 17 November 2018 (UTC)Reply
