question about metallurgy of copper (and diorite also)

edit

If there are extant copper items from before 2300bc at Ur, could chemistry or nuclear chemistry determine where the ore was mined, provided no mixing of different ores took place in the item?Rich 06:17, 13 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Interesting - it seems that the article on Magan has more space about Ranajit Pal & India than Oman. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.178.151.89 (talk) 14:55, 13 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

question about Magan <-> mangan

edit

As places where often named for the goods they provided, is it possible that Magan (wherever it was) was a source of mangan? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 5.159.72.242 (talk) 18:50, 5 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

Manganese deposits are quite rare in Oman. e.g. A. Hauptmann, 5000 Jahre Kupfer in Oman, Bochum, Abb. 6 opposite p. 20. Besides Mangan(ese) is a word historically strange to the region. Azd0815 (talk) 11:50, 24 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Regarding Frankincense harvested and from Dhofar province, this has nothing whatever to do with Magan/Makkan. In one of the main articles on the so-called Lower Sea cuneiform texts, Frankincense never occurs at all: W. Heimpel, Das Untere Meer, Zeitschrift für Assyriologie 77, 1987, 22-91. The use of the term "Oman" in the text is ahistoric and misleading: Traditional Oman (above the 22nd parallel, today's north-western, north-eastern and eastern provinces) differs from the Sultanate of Oman which formed politically in the subrecent to recent periods. Dhofar is neither a part of the earliest sultanate nor prior to this. Azd0815 (talk) 11:50, 24 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
