Where's the early life paragraph,Theres so much beign taken out?put it back.Stop changing it I'm removing the quote of the BBC Sinhala editor in this version and including it in the prose. Wikipedia is not an indiscriminate collection of information or a directory, so instead, I will add the government's reaction to this (the speech made by the president). Any other statements, (made by opposition, any organizations and individuals) I will include in the prose. If anyone feels that this is wrong, please feel free to put it right and inform me on where I have gone wrong. Chamal talk 08:25, 10 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

It's done. I will work on expanding the article and providing more info and sources on the assassination later in the day. Chamal talk 08:44, 10 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

There seems to be attempt at self promotion in citations by certain news websites in particular by Daily Mirror. This was repeated today and removed —Preceding unsigned comment added by 123.231.112.134 (talk) 12:58, 14 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Article should be a collection of facts not a collection of opinions by various organizations with various political biases. so i am removing "opinions" — Preceding unsigned comment added by 123.231.112.28 (talk)

please do not remove cited material without discussion. We all want to include facts, and these facts have to be sourced according to WP:V. The potential biases of these sources have to be taken into account, please refer to Wikipedia:WikiProject_Sri_Lanka_Reconciliation#Classification_of_sources. Lasantha Wickramatunge

edit

Lasantha Wickramatunge is the correct name, and not Lasantha Wickramatunga. See the official obituary notice: http://www.dailynews.lk/2009/01/12/main_Obituaries.asp, and Sunday Leader New Items, eg: http://www.thesundayleader.lk/20090111/NEWS.HTM. --Kanags (talk) 11:57, 12 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

This needs to be changed, his name is clearly misspelt you can also see the morning leader [1] Janamills (talk) 16:52, 14 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

now this is interesting. The red banner on the top has Wickrematunga, but the text has Wickrematunge. Apparently, the Leader itself is not very consistent in the transliteration. BTW, could someone with a Sinhala keyboard contribute hte Sinhala name? Jasy jatere (talk) 17:36, 14 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
correct name according to pronunciation would be "ga". However people continue to use "ge" spelling because of tradition. Before making statements like "Lasantha Wickramatunge is the correct name" kindly find out what the family actually use.--—Preceding unsigned comment added by 123.231.112.134 (talkcontribs)
The obituary notice [2] was given by the family and not by the Daily News. That clearly shows the "correct name". Thanks.--Kanags (talk) 12:15, 15 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Kanags is right, despite some inconsistency at the morning leader pointed out by Jasy it does seem that "RE" is the overwhelming convention there. The paper he founded, the obit. as well as family messages left on the leader (referenced in the article), should provide enough evidence that the spelling within his own circles was Wickrematunge". This should be changed quickly, I tried to do it but an editor reverted it. Just because the BBC spell it wrong [3] doesn't mean we have to. (talk) 00:59, 19 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Wickrematunge is the correct spelling. I did the story for the Daily Mirror, and we had an issue later on, as I misspelt the name in the initial story. Dinidu de Alwis (talk) 01:08, 10 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

WickrEmatunge (Wickrematunge) would seem to be the preferred spelling, as he and colleagues used that most:

Editorial

edit

Surely the article should say more about his posthumous editorial, given the huge amount of worldwide coverage it has received. Today on BBC World Service's Newshour programme it was read out in full, taking 15 minutes of airtime. I've never heard the World Service or indeed any other news programme do anything like this before. Ben Finn (talk) 19:23, 18 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Why not do it yourself :)) anyway what is the link of the BBC program. Taprobanus (talk) 19:11, 19 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Expanded on this, both in lead and in the posth editrl section. mukerjee (talk) 08:56, 19 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Wickrematunge — name needs an update

as mentioned earlier (above),
Wickrematunge seems to be the preferred spelling. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.52.133.233 (talk) 13:17, 7 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Removed "subject to editing restrictions" tag

edit

Since I find nothing in the discussion section on why it should be restricted. Pls add a note here before adding this tag. mukerjee (talk) 21:52, 18 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

A poorly made article with links not working

edit

I am tidying up the page now. I have removed links supposed to have written by Sunalie Ratnayake but none of them are working. I will continue to tidy up today. Don't add statements to glorify people without citing reliable sources please. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jillball (talkcontribs) 07:36, 28 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Removal of unsourced information

edit

Since this has been marked as in need of citations for more than two years without any editor taking action to fill these in, I've boldly removed most of the unsourced information from the article. I'll be working over the next few days to rebuild this one from reliable sources and would welcome any assistance. Cheers, Khazar2 (talk) 12:58, 13 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
