An archive that the Spanish Wikipedia listed as Consulados de Sevilla y Cádiz, 16th-19th centuries, I had translated as separate Consulados, one for Seville another for Cadiz, thus with two archives. The entry has been corrected to read as above. Perhaps without any more knowledge than I have. Two archivess? Or were the Consulados combined in the administration that engendered these archives, to produce one archive? --Wetman 01:48, 13 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

"Consulados" back then were merchant guilds and not diplomatic entities as we recognize them now. The first one was established in Sevilla and had the monopoly of trade with the Americas until the one in Cádiz was formed (ca. 17th century). Therefore these are two archives from two different entities, they just happen to be stored in the same place nowadays. -- Rune Welsh | ταλκ | Esperanza 02:33, 13 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
Hah! well, there you are! Angel-like, I feared to tread. So "Consulados of Seville and of Cádiz" as I had it originally to keep them separate, might be more correct, in the English Wikipedia, after all, without the "y" that suggests a label for a single archive. --Wetman 03:40, 13 December 2005 (UTC).Reply

Invite to Viva Florida 500

edit

I'd like to invite fellow Wikipedians interested in Florida history to join in our new project page for celebrating our state's 500th anniversay at Viva_Florida_500. Please review and join in getting this project off the ground. It's more than just about Ponce de Leon and his landing it is also about other cultures and what new content we can bring into Wiki such as adding new information about the Native Cultures that were here when this period of discovery began.--Ourhistory153 (talk) 14:58, 2 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Potential sources

edit

I've been trying to find (English) sources for this article and other Spanish monument articles that remain largely unsourced. I don't have time to personally work on all of them, but I just want to note this recent full-length reference, at least partially accessible online, which is about the archive and its history: The Invention of the Colonial Americas: Data, Architecture, and the Archive of the Indies, 1781–1844 by Byron Ellsworth Hamann (2022). Among other topics covered, for example, Chapter 2 seems to cover the genesis of the archive's collection, Chapter 3 is about the former Lonja building's conversion, etc. Hopefully it would be useful here; if I come across any other useful refs, I'll note them here too.
