Does anyone know the reason for the "crib" in crib sheets? Just curious.--190.39.202.28 23:08, 15 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, a crib (in this context) originally referred specifically to "a translation of a classic or other work in a foreign language, for the illegitimate use of students" - ie you're supposed to be translating the text yourself but you use someone else's translation to help you. Dates from the mid-1800s. Around the same period 'cribbing' also meant theft, which might be the etymological basis for it.. Caitifty (talk) 18:36, 27 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

As the term "Cheat Sheet" is commonly used these days (specially around the internet) I suggest that this section would either remain here or if it's moved the term Cheat Sheet is also noted there 78.39.93.4 (talk) 16:02, 19 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Cheating in tests has gone hi tech and people are using bluetooth for cheating. Want to small write up on this? Yourdeadin 10:05, 22 July 2007 (UTC)YourdeadinReply

I think that is relevant for Wikipedia, but maybe not on this page. It could be considered a form of cheating, but not so much a form of cheat sheet. 216.36.186.2 (talk) 13:35, 26 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

I agree, this is not relevant to this topic. Possibly to the Bluetooth page, possibly adding a section on cheating. AP Shinobi (talk) 23:58, 30 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Including decorative cheat sheets / posters

edit

I added some text about commercial cheat sheets and how they often end up on people's walls because they're colourful, & gave an example of a phlebotomy tube poster. However I don't know if referencing external commercial works is ok in wikipedia, so I'm hardly going to be offended if someone deletes or heavily edits it.. Also should be defined as "Crib Notes"

edit

I came across this page while trying to find web references to "Crib Notes", which I didn't find any good definitive uses of in either the topic of a web site or even non-web based resources. To my knowledge another standard colloquial reference to this is "Crib Notes" but I don't consider the connotation to be for "cheating" as much as some kind of legitimate reference material. I don't have access to OED but I would really surprised if it didn't include this usage. As far as references go again since this is basically a well understand colloquial topic I'm not sure what references can be made. If it helps any a quick search on nytimes.com will find numerous instances of the USAGE of the term "Crib Notes", several times as tongue-in-cheek headlines, and a few times by the writers in the articles.

techniques for making crib sheets

edit

A section on the best methods of making the sheets would be good. Including techniques for packing as much information into as small a space - software, writing techniques, etc...

Open-book internet-based exams

edit

I have added a short text:

In modern open-book internet-based examinations, the "cheat sheet" (loaded onto a USB stick for example) may be regarded as an essential component. Specifically, what the student loads is an indication of what the student knows. Wikipedia itself has also become a source for such pre-loaded notes.

I have recently constructed such an exam for my students and the results have been very good. Interestingly, some students were unable or unwilling to use the sticks for this purpose. A second run of the exam takes place in September. (MihalOrela (talk) 07:52, 27 August 2008 (UTC))Reply

Web Based Academic Assistance Tools

edit

A note should be added that many websites which aim toward helping students in the K12 (and sometimes in college level) classes are using many more cheat sheets as references. An example of this can be found at http://grandmath.com/sheets.php or http://tutorial.math.lamar.edu/pdf/Algebra_Cheat_Sheet.pdf —Preceding unsigned comment added by Yasic (talkcontribs) 23:09, 22 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

pony sheet

edit

It would be interesting to see a reference to "pony sheets". These is no article for pony sheet in Wikipedia.

Like another author, I have seen finely crafted pony sheets. These are legitimate study tools, often created by students to summarize critical information, and sometimes allowed by teachers into exam settings (for example, I remember a teacher allowing students to bring to a test any information that they could fit on a single piece of paper). I once met an elderly man (probably a mathematics teacher) who created a beautiful pony sheet, and so carefully condensed the information that the only way he could accurately copy the information was to make photographic copies (this was in Moscow and probably the gentleman had no access to a photocopy machine). 165.83.52.79 (talk) 22:20, 21 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
