Making Changes

edit

We are a teacher and librarian working with our Journalism class on adding and improving our school's Wikipedia page.

1. Should we post on the Talk page all of our additions that we want to make on our page first and then make it live? We are learning about how Wikipedia works. Thank you!

Telisj (talk) 17:47, 22 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

1. Is the word "extra-curricular" spelled correctly? What do you prefer? 2. Should we add the sub headings Clubs and Sports? Or Sports and Clubs?

Seems like "extracurricular" is only one word. Murphychs (talk) 16:44, 22 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

How can we add the names of notable alumni without creating a conflict of interest? We work and learn here at the school, so what steps do we need to take to avoid any conflicts?Murphychs (talk) 14:20, 27 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

To answer your main question, @Murphychs and Telisj:, the best way to get changes made to this page is to post here with your requested changes and use {{request edit}}. Primefac (talk) 14:39, 27 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Request Edit: Significant English course

edit

Please add "American Identities" as a significant course under the heading "Academics" and the subheading "English"

Along with basic English classes, Canton High School also offers an American Identities course that is unique to this particular high school. Students constantly receive messages from the media and society about who they are and what they are supposed to be. This full-year course, designed like a college seminar, will teach students to deconstruct these messages in order to understand what really comprises their identity. During the first semester, students will engage in discussions that raise awareness of stereotypes, challenge students to question their own biases, and discuss ways to promote respect. The second semester will be dedicated to a service learning project where students apply what they have learned in semester 1 to a real-world application. Our goal is for students to envision a better world and recognize the power of their own voices in creating this world.

Please add subheading "Advanced Placement" under heading "Academics"

At CHS, students have the opportunity to take Advanced Placement (AP) classes as a junior or a senior, with sixteen different AP courses being available at the school. CHS was given the AP Honor Roll Award in its seventh year of the award existence. The award is given to schools who increase their number of students participating in AP courses, as well as improve their scores on AP tests.

Not done. Seriously. Stop requesting course information. It won't be added. Primefac (talk) 17:43, 29 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
This seems like more than simply "course information"--rather it indicates recent strides in academic achievement here at the high school. Wouldn't that be notable (In our field it certainly is!)? Perhaps it doesn't make us "unique," but the achievement is notable. Here is a link to a published resource from College Board to add, which also indicates the relative rarity of this accomplishment (433 schools in U.S. and Canada achieved the distinction).
https://secure-media.collegeboard.org/digitalServices/pdf/ap/ap-district-honor-roll-7th-annual.pdf
Also, please recognize that you are dealing with high school students genuinely interested in improving the article that represents our school (and, by extension hope to improve Wikipedia). We are novice and bound to make mistakes. Be direct with us, help us, but don't scold our students. We suggested changes on the talk page instead of making the edits directly, we suggested something we deemed noteworthy, and cited it--all modifications that were applied from your suggestions (and others') for our previous requests. We're not looking to simply flood the page with pointless info. If there's something else we need to do in order for this info to pass your judgments, let us know and we'll make the change. Murphychs (talk) 10:49, 31 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
Not done Many schools offer unique courses and learning curriculum, but unless it receives significant, in depth coverage, it's not appropriate for an encyclopedic entry. Articles do not list every possible aspect of a business, institution or person but the significant and notable aspects of each. As far as scolding goes - no one was scolding students. Primefac was being firm and direct after several requests that ultimately had no chance of being included. All editors, regardless of age or education are treated the same and are expected to follow certain policies and guidelines but some lenience is afforded to new editors with the expectation that they heed the advice and guidance from more experienced editors. CHRISSYMAD ❯❯❯¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 17:59, 31 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
I agree that the fact that the school offers the AP program is worth mentioning. I'll add that unless someone objects. I don't think we need to go into detail about what AP is since we would just link to Advanced Placement. The AP Honor Roll Award is a district level award. Why would we mention in in an article about one particular school? Is this the only high school in the district?
As for the comment "If there's something else we need to do in order for this info to pass your judgments, let us know and we'll make the change." we've already done that. See the link below that I posted two days ago. We're volunteers and, while we appreciate that you are following the conflict of interest rules, we get tired of dealing with requests where it's clear the poster has not read the school article guidelines, or worse yet, is repeating a request. Meters (talk) 18:04, 31 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Meters--Thanks for the clarification. We will certainly use that link you added (in fact, we'll spend class time today just drafting sections for publication. We won't even suggest them for edit until we double-check that we include only what is suggested and we avoid including anything in the "what not to include" section). It's a great resource for us, but I don't think we were directed to that specific link in any of the threads that preceded Primefac's curt response. To answer your other question: yes, CHS is the only high school in the district (there is a vocational school in town, but I don't think it's connected to Canton Public School district). We will continue reading the guiding articles as we progress and hope to minimize faults on our end. Thanks for your help! Murphychs (talk) 14:23, 5 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

I gave you the link here [1], two days before this thread started. I even told you in this thread that I had already given you the link before with: "See the link below that I posted two days ago." Please read the responses you are given a bit more carefully.
Since the district has only the one high school I don't see a problem mentioning the AP Honor Roll Award in this article, as long as we also mention that this is the only high school in the district. I'll add that too if no-one objects. Meters (talk) 22:17, 5 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
Meters FWIW I don't know that I agree with it being included - if it were the only one in the state, that would be a different story, imo. Being the only HS in any given district isn't notable imo, but i'll defer to someone more experienced in this than I am. CHRISSYMAD ❯❯❯¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 22:40, 5 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

COI editing

edit

This article has been edited by a slough of editors with "CHS" attached to their uernames, including User:Murphychs, User:Sineadchs, User:Amandachs, User:Taylorchs, User:Patrickchs, User:Anastasiyachs, User:Laurenchs, and more. The consistency with which these names is generated suggests to me that they are being created by the school staff and that they are all quite possibly sockpuppets. Anyone want to open up an WP:SPI? KDS4444 (talk) 18:03, 6 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

I don't think an SPI is required. It appears to be a school project, and the students (and at least one teacher) are correctly attempting to follow the COI guidelines. Multiple users from the same school does not imply socking, and the consistency of the names is likely just a result of this being a class project. The usernames are not an issue. See my talk page for more. Meters (talk) 18:07, 6 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, definitely not socking (or even meat, for that matter). Half of the conversations on this talk page indicate that it's a school group/project. Primefac (talk) 18:21, 6 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
Granted. Doesn't this still make their edits to the article a COI issue? (None of them has made a declaration on his/ her userpage, for example). KDS4444 (talk) 18:25, 6 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
Well spotted, and of course that's why they're making {{edit request}}s all up and down the page... Yes, they should state that they're from the school, but so far they have been playing by the rules (for the most part). Sorry for the attitude, it's been one of those days. Primefac (talk) 18:31, 6 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
Of course it's COI issue. That's why they have been proposing edits on the talk page rather than making them directly since they were informed of the problem. Ideally they would also formally declare their conflicts of interest on their talk pages or by using a "connected contributor" template on this page, but by requesting edits on an unprotected page they are indirectly declaring their conflicts of interest already. I'll add a template to this page that they can fill in as they wish. Meters (talk) 18:38, 6 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
I had not reviewed the talk page before adding this section. I saw multiple instances of edits directly to the article with "chs" suffixes, and my radar went up. {{UserboxCOI}} would have been a good way to make declarations. (Um, that was a hint, Amanda, Taylor, Anastasiya, Murphy, Sinead, Patrick, etc.) KDS4444 (talk) 18:44, 6 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Meters, KDS4444, and Primefac: The templates, be they on userboxes or articles or wherever else, are meant to alert non-involved readers and just-arrived editors that they should be on the lookout for the sorts of additions to the website that COI forbids. But we've got a combination of the "chs" suffix, the immediate end to editing the article once they became aware of COI, and their ongoing, good-faith, successful efforts to comply with it. That seems to be enough that adding those templates wouldn't be getting anything across that isn't already obvious. Because while it's not deliberate, those templates serve as a "watch this person's behavior" badge, and in terms of behavior, they've seriously behaved like we wish everybody with a conflict would. CityOfSilver 16:30, 7 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

I have no concerns at all with how the school editors are acting. I simply put the connected contributor template up since one editor was still questioning this. I have no objection to it being removed. Meters (talk) 17:41, 7 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Suggested Edit: School History--Origin of CHS

Please consider the following first paragraph for under the heading of "History": We plan on adding more to the history of the school as we discover it through research.

Canton High School is situated in Canton, Mass, about half a mile from Canton Center, on Washington Street. First discussed in 1866 among prominent members of the town of Canton, the high school was established in 1869, when, for the first time, four classes were educated in the same building at a grammar school in South Canton.
