Meaning of aptitude

This page previously contained a brief comment about the more common meaning of "aptitude". I'm not familiar with Wikipedia, but should the computer meaning be moved to, eg, "aptitude (computer)" so that this page can be used for the usual meaning of the word?

Not really, brief dictionary definitions belong to the Wiktionary. If someone actually writes something notable about the generic aptitude, then we can easily move things to accomodate for it, but I wouldn't consider it too likely. --Shallot 22:45, 20 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Skills, Abilities and Aptitudes

The section "Skills, Abilities and Aptitudes" currently contains the text:

Skills, abilities, and aptitudes are similarly related but distinct, descriptions of what a person can do, and should not be conflated. Skills are a backward looking description. Skills describe what a person has learned to do in the past. Abilities are a present description.

To me it sound like skills and abilities are synonyms. Unless someone can point out that "skills" and "abilities" are not synonyms I am going to reword that section. Thue | talk 21:12, 1 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

This statement is intended to describe one of the ways by which skills, abilities, and aptitudes can be differentiated. This differetiation approch relies on the aspect of time. Skills are based on past experience and education. Abilities describe what a person can do right now. Aptitudes indicate potential a person has for future ability. The Document Talent is a Force not a Tool contains a good overview of aptitudes, is very detailed, and covers the TMA problem well. I would like this article to link to it, however the spam bot has disallowed this. I do not know why this document site has been blacklisted and if it is part of some larger domain that has been black listed, is it possible to unblacklist this document? Governments' version for merit or aptitude for its candidate selection

Kindly mention the fact that the there are 2 version of merits.

  • 1. Ideally: Merit is the ability to perform the specific job. Such as in a job for parcel packing, sense of geometry, good collaboration, systematic arranging of things and good labeling is required.

Similarly in a clerical job; the required qualities are listening to the common people visiting the clerk's office, bringing and sending necessary files, data entry, informing the vistors/clients about necessary information.

  • 2. Practically : Merit means ability to score high in job selection process. Which may include: 1. Ability to memorise and recall millions of facts, curency names of countries, present and past presidents of countries, atheletic or spots champion names, important historical dates and events etc. 2. Ability to perform large calculations in mind and without calculators, 3. Writing some essays like role of a past political leader in certain revolution, and particularly for private jobs 4. Recalling some answers or protocols ditto as in notebook, 4. Ability to look clever and being able to use body language in the "HR round" or other interview.

Unfortunately there are no connection between the 2; and it comes within scope of failure of merit system and why it should be improved.
