From a full size car, the Fairlane became an intermediate sized car in 1962, bridging the gap between the compact Falcon and full size Galaxie. A facelift in 1963 saw a new concave grille and in 1964 another new grille and the tail fins were gone
For 1964 and 1965 models available were: base Fairlane and upmarket Fairlane 500 in 2 door and 4 door sedans, Also available were the Fairlane 500 and Sports Coupe 2 door hardtops.
Ford introduced a Ford Fairlane Thunderbolt for drag racing in 1964, heavily modified to incorporate Ford's 427 cu in V8 race engine with two 4 barrel carburetors, ram-air through the openings left by deleting the inboard headlights, equal-length headers, trunk-mounted battery, fiberglass hood, doors, fenders and front bumper, acrylic glass windows, and other lightweight options. The cars wore Fairlane 500 trim, and only in the 2 door sedan. Between 111 and 127 were made and delivered 657 hp
