Zabit Akhmedovich Magomedsharipov (Russian: Забит Ахмедович Магомедшарипов; born 1 March 1991) is a Russian mixed martial artist from Dagestan of Avar ethnicity, currently competing in the Featherweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. He is a former Absolute Championship Berkut (ACB) Featherweight champion. As of June 25, 2019, he is #5 in the UFC featherweight rankings.[2]

BackgroundEdit

Magomedsharipov was born in Khasavyurt, Soviet Union on 1 March 1991. He started to train in freestyle wrestling at 10 years and then sanda. In 2003 he joined the Wushu boarding school "Pyat Storon Sveta",one of the nation academic institutions, where he lived for 10 to 12 years for education and trained martial arts three times per day[3]training under Gusein Magomaev. In 2012 he made his professional MMA debut.[4]

Absolute Championship BerkutEdit

Magomedsharipov has 6–0 in the ACB and was featherweight champion.[5][6]

Ultimate Fighting ChampionshipEdit

Magomedsharipov signed a four-fight deal with the UFC in May 2017.[7]

Magomedsharipov was expected to face Nick Hein on September 2, 2017 at UFC Fight Night: Struve vs. Volkov.[8] However, Hein pulled out of the fight on August 21[9] and was replaced by Mike Santiago.[10] Magomedsharipov won the fight via submission rear-naked choke in the second round and was awarded a Performance of the Night bonus.[11][12]

Magomedsharipov faced promotional newcomer Sheymon Moraes on November 25, 2017 at UFC Fight Night: Bisping vs. Gastelum.[13] He won the fight via submission in the third round.[14] The win also earned Magomedsharipov his second Performance of the Night bonus award.[15]

Magomedsharipov faced Kyle Bochniak on April 7, 2018 at UFC 223.[16] He won the fight by unanimous decision.[17] This win earned him a Fight of the Night bonus.[18] Shortly after the bout, Magomedsharipov signed a new multi-fight contract with UFC.[19]

Magomedsharipov was expected to fight Yair Rodríguez on September 8, 2018 at UFC 228.[20] However, Rodríguez pulled out of the fight on August 23[21] and was replaced by Brandon Davis.[22] Magomedsharipov won the fight via submission in the second round with a modified kneebar.[23]

Magomedsharipov faced Jeremy Stephens on March 2, 2019 at UFC 235.[24] He won the fight by unanimous decision.[25]

Magomedsharipov was expected to face Calvin Kattar on October 18, 2019 at UFC on ESPN 6.[26] However, Magomedsharipov was removed from the card due to injury on September 13 and the pairing was rescheduled for the following month at UFC on ESPN+ 21.[27]
