Women in Engineering

I am doing a big piece of research for the Women's Engineering Society in preparation for their centenary in 2019. As a part of that project I am indexing all the women's names in WES's journal, The Woman Engineer from 1919 to the present. My problem is that I would ideally like to upload the index to Wikipedia because of the wealth of hitherto unknown engineers who are coming to light in the development of this index. Can anyone advise me if there is a way I can persuade the Wikipedia reviewers to accept this sort of Wikipedia entry? thanks --Lovelacepullinger (talk) 09:35, 4 May 2016 (UTC)nina

Lovelacepullinger, as a first step, I would suggest you take your list and add it to Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Engineering. WP:WPWIR is a project that is dedicated to increasing the coverage of notable women in Wikipedia, and we're always looking for more ideas on who else should be included. However, for those names to be valuable, we need to know more than just the name. The more data you can include with each woman, the better. Where did they work, what papers did they publish in the journal (with full citation, doi, or link), what was their field of work, did they have a leadership position or award with WES, where did they get their degrees, and so on? 1bandsaw, Thanks for responding. I have taken a look at the WIR Engineering list page and dont think this quite fits the bill for what I need to be able to do. There are two principal functions I need to achieve: one is as an index to the journals that will soon be online elsewhere, so we can direct people to the index and help them find people of interest to them in the journals and the second is to put names out into the web of women engineers about whom almost nothing is currently known so that others can find them and add whatever info they may have, such as family historians etc. This is pretty much how I have pieced together the lives of engineers who are otherwise not fully written up - by stitching together tiny factlets from here and there. The list will have hundreds, maybe thousands, of names, the vast majority of whom have not contributed articles themselves but are mentioned in some way. I couldnt figure out where on WIR's talk page a general query like this could go. Wikipedia's insistence on "notability" is giving me difficulties as in many cases these women should be notable but their histories are hidden and not written about in the places that Wikipedia prefers. Lovelacepullinger, I would suggest that the WiR list of women engineers is the right place to meet your second objective. That list of redlinks (along with all the other WiR redlink lists) is a way to get some data out about women who have done something meaningful in the world, so that others can then add their bits of data until we get an article about the woman. Yes, notability is a challenge, and particularly more so for women who have often been ignored by history. As for where to ask this question on WiR's talk page, there's a bar toward the top of the page that says Click here to start a new discussion thread, and just go ahead and ask! Help with the biography of Khema one of the two main female disciples of the Buddha

Hello. I'm a new editor and am delighted to find this project and know of the good work you are doing on Wikipedia. I have added my name to the membership list.

I'm currently beginning to work on the biography of one of the two main female disciples of Gautama Buddha, Khema (c. 558 – c. 491 BC). The other main female disciple was named Uppalavanna (which has a little more content and better sources, yet also needs work). The current article on Khema has some material but no references. I'd like to begin to start collecting sources so that I can flesh out the current biography with additional material and authoritative citations and move it out of the danger zone of potential deletion or copyright violation.

I'm more familiar with the later tantric, Tibetan Buddhist, and Vajrayana sources, literature, and histories, I'm not as familiar with material relevant to the development of Buddhism during the Buddha's lifetime. So I'm reaching out here in hopes that some of you might be able to send sources and source material my way to contribute to this article, or perhaps are interested in collaborating with me on this article.

Help with an article?

I'm going to be posting this in several different areas, but I was wondering if anyone could help out with the draft Draft:Rape joke. I think that this could be independently notable outside of rape culture, but the draft needs a lot of work and it'd stand a better chance of holding up to scrutiny (since let's face it, this would get a ton of scrutiny once it was accepted) if we had multiple editors working on it. Looking for feedback on a tool on Visual Editor to add open license text from other sources

Hi all

I'm designing a tool for Visual Editor to make it easy for people to add open license text from other sources, there are a huge number of open license sources compatible with Wikipedia including around 9000 journals. I can see a very large opportunity to easily create a high volume of good quality articles quickly. I have done a small project with open license text from UNESCO as a proof of concept, any thoughts, feedback or endorsements (on the Meta page) would be greatly appreciated.

Malleus Maleficarum

Malleus Maleficarum is an important case of discrimination against women that led to many of them being burned at stakes after being tortured during trials (some not even surviving the trial). Section "Major themes" also discusses the title itself. Women who did not cry during their trial were automatically believed to be witches. Family abandonement

I recently discovered, that in some jurisdictions there is or was in the past such a legal concept as "family/household abandonement/desertion", that historically somehow disadvantaged women (or, probably, still disadvantages them in some parts of this Best of possible worlds). In Wikipedia there is only a brief mention of it in the article Abandonment. It would be instrumental to the Project, if someone makes an article on this topic. Comments on draft - a notable school 1790s-1810s

I've written a draft article and would appreciate feedback before it goes live, specifically on what I should call it. We lacked an article on a significant, albeit defunct, girls' school. Readers of Jane Austen may remember the description in Emma of "a real, honest, old-fashioned Boarding-school"; this is based on the one Austen attended, and it counted several other notable writers among its alumnae. It is a bit of a Ship of Theseus paradox, because the school changed location and owners and names over the decades. Whatever title is decided on, I'll create various redirects. Possible titles include:

Reading Abbey Girls' School

Gateway School, Reading

Latournelle and St Quentin School (I believe this is most recognisable to Austen scholars)

St Quentin School

Note that two schools still active today bear similar names, Reading Girls' School and The Abbey School, Reading. And the very name of the town is confusing at first glance, when combined with any mention of education. (Reading, writing, school.) How best to create a title that does not mislead? 1978 March for the Equal Rights Amendment

There was not a Wikipedia page for the March for the Equal Rights Amendment in Washington DC in 1978. So in a sense it was a "redlink." 100,000 people marched, and altho there wasn't that much press coverage, it seems like a notable event. Hi, and hope some opera buff might assist

I was directed to the page of Virginia Zeani today, by someone noting that the bulk of the BLP article was plagiarised/wholly unattributed. Indeed, I found a half dozen sections or so, all with material that had been section tagged since 2015 as unsourced. I pasted the mess into Talk, and began searching for sources, and moving sourced, verifiable content back into the article. Problem is, (a) I am now in business, and not academia, and so academic references in the humanities and arts are unavailable to me, (b) I am not an expert, or even a devotee, and so even the non-professionals access to these sources. So, for instance, I can only access a snippet version of the Grove Book of Opera Singers, etc., etc.

Hence, I would call this to your attention, for a careful return of the article to a more complete version, after the few days work that would be required to make it encyclopedic, rather than sixth form plagiarised in quality and honesty. BSOleader it is suggested that you do WP:BEFORE before attempting to delete clearly notable files. I added two sources as well as additional information to the stub. Fairly certain that "most powerful woman in the country" responsible for minting the crown's coinage and buying jewels for the king, was notable. I am wondering if participants of this project see this person, Adella Hunt Logan, as qualifying for a stand-alone article. She seems to be a minor player in the suffrage movement and did not gather a lot of notice in her time. Steve Quinn Let's see, a free black woman living in Georgia before the civil war, who was educated and became a teacher. She became a teacher at Tuskegee, the most noted training institution for African Americans. She was published as an author, at a time when women, much less black women, were rarely published. I'd say that easily meets "unique", thus notable. Is the information then verifiable? Yes, as there are reliable sources, including 2 from Oxford University Press. Is there significant coverage? Yes, sufficient to create a comprehensive biography, requiring no original research. All that verifies that she meets GNG. Why do you assume she "did not gather a lot of notice in her time"? Most of the black press is not available on line. If she was published in The Crisis and The Colored American Magazine, it is probable that the black newspapers covered her. The problem with trying to base notability on one facet of someone's life is that it doesn't evaluate the totality of their notability. She definitely qualifies for a stand-alone article. @SusunW: Thank you for your wonderful response. I was not trying to say that she fails to meet notability guidelines. I am trying to gain perspective on how this person is to be considered notable. I am aware that sources available to us Wikipedia editors from that time period may be difficult to come by, and when I reviewed the article I sensed there was something notable about this person, so that is why I am asking for input from these projects. You have aptly placed Ms. Logan into context for me, and I appreciate it. Her accomplishments are remarkable and unique given the time period, including her training. @SusunW: I was also trying to figure out how to apply the references toward notability. Apparently, I am not familiar with using these types of references to say a person is notable per Wikipedia standards. Your articulate response is showing me how the references apply in this instance. This could be useful for other such articles. sexist?

It would seem that this project exists to call out women's achievements over history however by calling out women separately, how does this achieve equality?
