foreign born American presidential candidates

Do we have an article on foreign-born American presidential candidates that qualify for president? It would be a good overview to work from, and should cover eligibility requirements and why the candidates are eligible. This would include John McCain (born Panama), Cruz (born Canada), and anyone else I can't think of for the moment. And there's the statements that Barry Goldwater (born Arizona Territory) wasn't American enough as he wasn't born in a state. -- 70.51.203.69 (talk) 06:04, 1 July 2015 (UTC)

John McCain wasn't born in Panama. He was born in the Panama Canal Zone, which was considered sovereign territory of the United States, although not a state. This is a minor distinction, but makes him similar to Goldwater. Robert McClenon (talk) 18:12, 1 July 2015 (UTC)

The Panama Canal Zone is part of Panama now, and as of the time he ran for president, so not like Goldwater, since Arizona is still part of the US. It would be like that situation on the TV show "The West Wing" where a bit of a state was given to Canada when the border was redrawn, and questions about the citizenship of the staffer who was born in territory no longer part of the US. -- 67.70.32.20 (talk) 06:27, 2 July 2015 (UTC)

Well, not really. United States Federal Law 8 U.S. Code § 1401 - Nationals and citizens of United States at birth, says they were all natural-born United States citizens at birth. The child inherits the citizenship of any parent who is a United States citizenship. Birthright citizenship in the United States. Presidential infoboxes

I'd like to alert members of the project that one user has taken it upon himself to remove most children from infoboxes on every U.S. President -- see this for example. I would like members of the project to know because such wholesale changes should be discussed first, at least in my opinion. Calidum T|C 05:22, 5 July 2015 (UTC)

Infobox MOS states that the "Children" field should contain number of children rather than the names of children, unless the children are notable (for our purposes in the infobox, this means having a Wikipedia article). It reads: "Only if independently notable themselves or particularly relevant. Number of children (e.g. three or 3), or list of names if notable...For privacy reasons, consider omitting the names of children of living persons, unless notable." The guideline regarding inclusion of children's names is found here. Someone with 2 children but only one child notable would read: "2, including Joe Blow" (with Joe Blow's name in piping that redirects to the article on them). Being the child of a president does not make that child notable (see WP:NOTINHERITED for more). The names of the non-notable children taken out of the infobox should remain in the article body, of course. This is not a "wholesale change", just a change to put the fields of the associated article infoboxes more into compliance. The New American

We have a recently-created article on The New American - a publication of the John Birch Society - which might benefit from scrutiny from experienced contributors. The article seems to be lacking in any suggestion that the views of such a fringe organisation might be seen as controversial, and appears more than a little promotional in my opinion. Help needed! I have updated information for the entry on King County Library System

I'm the public relations specialist for the King County Library System in western Washington State. One of our staffers pointed out that the Wiki page for the lirary system is outdated, and I've been assigned to the task.

I have edited and updated the copy, updated and/or changed the links to current information, and swapped the links on each community library to direct users to the libraries, rather than the communities.

I'm aware of the need for neutrality, and have done my best to be completely objective in the information provided, but I offer the information for review by a neutral third party.

The update--with new photograph of a new library--is in a Word file. I have not posted or edited anything on Wikipedia yet, and am reluctant to update/edit the article directly without some oversight.

How do I proceed?

Suggestion for US state WikiProjects

Hello all! I was curious if anyone else thought it might be a good idea to make a (nonbinding) guideline on how individual US state WikiProjects should organize themselves. Some of the individual state WikiProjects don't look so good and have little content, but a few I think are really good. The front page of the WikiProjects for Hawaii, Massachusetts, Missouri, New Jersey, Ohio, Texas, California, Arkansas are all pretty nice, I think, and might be used as examples. Georgia, Texas, and Massachusetts all have a nice organizational bar at the top. I'm sure with discussion some other additions could be added to a guideline, but I was just curious if anyone thought this was a good and realistic idea first before making a huge guideline. (And nonbinding is the most important part for me, if the community does agree to a guideline for the US State WikiProjects.) JonathanHopeThisIsUnique (talk) 20:39, 30 July 2015 (UTC)

That's a huge can of worms. There were gigantic arguments about WPUSA "taking over" and dictating to state wikiprojects, last time anything was tried. (like adding switches to indicate state projects in the banner, or merging inactive state projects into WPUSA as taskforces) -- 67.70.32.190 (talk) 07:28, 2 August 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for replying! That's exactly why I wanted to stress that this would only be a guideline, not mandatory. You should propose it at each state project you wish to do this to, first, and get their assent before asking to add it to this project. As I said, it was a huge can of worms last time, just adding mention of their projects onto WPUSA's banner. If they assent this time, then each project, individually should give permission, or we may run into the same can of worms. So ask the state projects first, then come back here for each project that says yes, and we can discuss each individually. I would say you'd need atleast 1-month of discussions at each state wikiproject, before coming back here, because last time they complained about being to quick on the trigger as well. -- 67.70.32.190 (talk) 03:49, 3 August 2015 (UTC)

JonathanHopeThisIsUnique - You may wish to check out: Wikipedia:WikiProject X. I would suggest researching the difference between guidelines - policy - and essays. I believe what you are requesting is an essay which can be approved by consensus by a wikiproject, while either a guideline or policy must have wide consensus through a venue such as the Village Pump. All State wikiprojects are only as good as the number of editors involved - many State wikiprojects may be either semi-active or inactive. I work on WikiProject Kentucky although I don't speak for it. In principle, I can support something like this. However, what's good for state WikiProjects would generally be good for all WikiProjects so maybe it's really a better idea to work on Wikipedia:WikiProject X as stated above. I'm not sure what state WikiProjects would uniquely need outside of guidelines (essays) about the structure of the main state article and major child articles (e.g., "History of..."). Do you have any specific ideas for common features for state WikiProjects? Stevie is the man! ^{Talk • Work} 10:46, 3 August 2015 (UTC)

I for one would very much like to see this project succeed but if you guys think you are going to be able to do this you are kidding yourselves. If you start dropping notices on the talk pages of these project the trolls are going to come out of the wood work and you are going to be covered in drama. I believe most state wikiprojects are dormant (at least that's the case for most of the states I follow). Echoing what was said above, at least one editor tried this years ago, back when most state projects were active. It resulted in a bunch of hard feelings, with us loosing at least one good editor. I support the idea, but I think you're walking a tightrope between the projects that are essentially dead, and those that are proudly active and refuse to succumb to "the man". With that said, the optimist in me says that Wikipedia has matured some since the last time this was tried, and your chance of success now is probably better than before. So bottom line, I support you trying, but be prepared and grow some thick skin, as you may need it.Dave (talk) 03:48, 5 August 2015 (UTC)

Most of the state projects where dormant when that editor started try to get the state projects to work together then. Its even more the case now for several reasons including general editing being down and a complete loss in faith in the WikiProject system by many editors. WikiProjects are a magnet for drama (and shouldn't be). Some projects are allowed to exert undo influence and article ownership and although both are against various rules, they continue to get away with it. Knowledge of local governments in Alabama?

I've been working on List of cities and towns in Alabama trying to get it up to featured status. I'm wondering if anybody has knowledge on the specific role of local governments in Alabama. Confusing lists in Culture of United States

There is someone removing redirects and pointing all the articles about Art in the United states to a bunch of circular lists that they have created.

• Art of the United States was a redirect to Visual art of the United States
  • It essentially lists every artist in that article and links to
  • Colonial American Art which is a list
  • 18th-century American Art which is a list
  • 19th-century American Art which is a list
• Previously American art went to the disambiguation page American art (disambiguation) but it is now redirected to Art of the United States

The major articles Visual art of the United States, Music of the United States, Cuisine of the United States are being unlinked and added to the bottoms of these pages as misc "See also" articles.

Andrew Mellon Building, 1785 Massachusetts Avenue NW Washington DC

I am a retired British Diplomat. In December, 1940 my father, a British Civil Servant working for the Air Ministry was transferred from the British Supply Board to Canada in Montreal, Canada, to the British Air Commission in Washington DC. That Commission, headed by Sir Henry Self and later by Sir Richard Fairey (of Fairey Aviation) occupied the whole of the Andrew Mellon building. My father's office was in what had been the main bathroom of Andrew Mellon's apartment.(the bath taps, which had reputedly been gold plated, had been removed!). He worked there until his section needed more room and the Commission acquired an annexe at 1520, 18th Street. My father's office was on the top floor of that building and that floor was used by the Aeronautical Inspection Directorate which had British inspectors stationed at all the industrial installations in the USA making aircraft and aeronautical equipment for the British Government during the war. Winding down the Commission's activities took a long time after the war and my father was in charge of winding up the activities of the Aeronautical Inspection Directorate. He completed that task in March, 1946 and returned to the UK. Unfortunately, I do not know either when the British Air Commission first occupied the Andrew Mellon Building, nor when they vacated it. It had already been occupied by them for some time when we arrived in December, 1940 and was probably still occupied by them until late 1945 or early 1946. No doubt the lease records held by the owners will give the actual dates.

I attended High School at Western High School, Washington, DC, and graduated from there in June, 1943, at the age of 16. I then went to George Washington University, but was forced to abandon my studies there in May, 1945 and return to England to do military service. ( I served 3 years in the RAF, finally being demobilied in 1948. I then studied for, and successfully took, the competitive examinsations for entry into the British Civil Service, joining the Foreign Service in February, 1950. I retired from that Service (which had been renamed the Diplomatic Service) in 1987 at the age of 60, having served in 11 different countries, including 3 years as Special Advisor to His Majesty the Sultan of Brunei. See also the British version of Who's Who. ) During my High School summer vacations, like many American schoolchildren, I got a job. I worked in the mail room of the British Air Commission for 8 weeks in 1943 in the Andrew Mellon Building.

The existing Wikipedia article on the Andrew Mellon Building makes no mention of the wartime role of the building. I hope I am not alone in thinking that that should be remedied.

You may not know that there were so many British Government missions in Washington DC during the war that part of K street West of 18th Street NW was nicknamed "Little Whitehall" from the number of British missions which had offices on that street. It might make an interesting topic for research, perhaps as part of a broader look into all the foreign missions in Washington during World War II. It ought to include the struggles between the unofficial De Gaullist mission and that which backed General Giraud as being the true representatives of Free France.

Task Force K-Bar

The image with the text "US Navy SEALs from Task Force K-Bar in Afghanistan, 2002." is incorrect. This is not an American soldier, in fact, it is a Norwegian Special Operator from FSK or MJK. Not only have I seen the image before somewhere in a Norwegian setting, but you can see it on the camouflage pattern he uses (partrol hat, jacket and chestrig) which is exclusively used by Norwegians.

He even uses the standard Norwegian "GRU (Grunnutrustning)" (chestrig setup).

The desert-pants however, are similar to what US (and other) forces use. It's not unusual that NORSOF use American and British gear, but the other way around REALLY is.

Even the headpiece is consistent with both form and color of the standard Norwegian Armed Forces "balaklava".

The fact that this article was actually made by US military personell is really embarassing. Get your facts straight.

Need to upgrade importance of Coastal erosion in southeast Louisiana article

For the life of me, I cannot understand why low importance is being placed on the Coastal erosion in Southeast Louisiana article, as indicated in the template, when so much is at stake for the survival of my region. Sorry folks, but that that is unacceptable. How would you feel if your state lost 30 football fields a day? I'm sure that if it happened to any other state, it would get a higher level of importance. The Louisiana wetlands serve as a critical barrier against storm surges during hurricanes and tie into the ecosystem of the whole nation. Keep in mind that New Orleans sits at a crucial strategic point the mouth of the largest river of commerce in the world and has a tri-axial port: 1) sea port 2) North-South river port, and 3) an east-west port, the Intercostal waterway, which runs East and West. What do you think Jefferson had in mind when he bought Louisiana? In his writings he said that the primary reason was to gain access to the port of New Orleans. @Garagepunk66: The importance scale is somewhat subjective, and anyone is free to reassess. Per the WikiProject US importance scale: The criteria used for rating article importance are not meant to be an absolute or canonical view of how significant the topic is. Rather, they attempt to gauge the probability of the average reader of Wikipedia needing to look up the topic (and thus the immediate need to have a suitably well-written article on it). Thus, subjects with greater popular notability may be rated higher than topics which are arguably more "important" but which are of interest primarily to students of the United States. One rule of thumb I use "how likely is this subject to appear in a book on X", with X being the Project title. I have no qualms with Coastal erosion in Southeast Louisiana being a Mid level importance. Note that I ranked the article for the United States project, leaving WP Louisiana assessed; it probably merits a higher priority on the Louisiana sub-project. --Animalparty! Proposal: incorporate WikiProject Alabama into this project

Doing this in mass has not been popular so I'm going to try a single state-by-state proposal but starting here, is there interest in incorporating Wikipedia:WikiProject Alabama (starting with the "A"s) as a taskforce into Template:WikiProject United States and into the greater project. Now that I am again able to edit I would like to clarify this. A few years ago I noticed most of the US related WikiProject were dead and tried to keep them alive. I asked every one if they wanted to participate in a collaboration. Some agreed, some disagreed and some did not respond at all because the projects were basically defunct. For the ones that agreed or didn't reply I added them to the project banner for WPUS. For the others I skipped. Alabama was a project that originally agreed but then changed their minds later and wanted out (like Florida and a couple others). The whole thing turned into a giant fight and some treated it like a hostile takeover. So I would be very careful before doing anything with any more projects. Personally, its my opinion that this project could operate independently of any other projects and include theirs as well (such as having a subproject for California and California has its own project as well). Others disagree. Right now, none of the projects are really flourishing and most are inactive at best including this one. So until this project and or some of the others gain some activity, I would advise against adding any more projects. I hope that helps to clarify.Reguyla (talk) 14:20, 5 October 2015 (UTC)

Let's not forget that this banner can get beyond ugly because it includes not just some states but also some cities within the state projects as well. It can be exceedingly complicated for that reason. California I suspect won't join given the number of task forces related to regions which aren't really done on this projects so those taskforces would be "lost" in a sense if there was a merger here. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 20:10, 5 October 2015 (UTC)

Discussion of merging recently created content fork

France in the American Revolutionary War has been the subject of two recent move requests (Requested move 29 January 2015, Requested move 20 August 2015), both of which have failed. Perhaps frustrated by the failure to move, but undeterred from purpose, new User:AdjectivesAreBad chose to build the created redirect into its own article. France in the ARW is a legitimate topic, has existed since 2005, and deserves improvement. Newly created Anglo-French War (1778–83) is a clear content fork, and should be deleted and redirected (or perhaps merged) to the France in the American Revolutionary War pagespace. Issue of project ranging beyond a sensible scope

An example, the article on Ram Mounts is flagged as being part of WikiProject United States (which I will abbreviate WPUS). Sure, it's a USA company but it sells its product around the world. What is the benefit to the company itself, or to its customers, especially its foreign customers, or to Wikipedia, or to the WPUS project, or to the USA in general so to flag the article? Surely WPUS is about things uniquely American (by which I mean here "pertaining to the USA"), it's not about everything American. Or is it? Is it a nationalistic project or is it one to celebrate or lament (as and when appropriate) that which is uniquely American? Paul Beardsell (talk) 04:04, 17 January 2016 (UTC)

American companies face American laws, so the legal structure of the company would be American, and thus the people to consult would be WPLAW or WPUSA. Since at least the late 1990s, Chrysler has performed poorly in independent rankings of reliability, quality, and customer satisfaction. In 2011, James B. Stewart said in The New York Times that Chrysler's quality in 2009 was "abysmal," and cited that all Chrysler brands were in the bottom quarter of J. D. Power and Associates' customer satisfaction survey. In 2015, Fiat Chrysler brands ranked at the bottom of J. D. Power and Associates' Initial Quality Study, and the five Fiat Chrysler brands were the five lowest ranked of 20 brands in their Customer Service Index, which surveyed customer satisfaction with dealer service. Chrysler has performed poorly in Consumer Reports annual reliability ratings. In 2009 and 2010, Chrysler brands were ranked lowest in the Consumer Reports Annual Auto Reliability Survey; in 2014 and 2015, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, and Fiat were ranked at or near the bottom; in 2015 five of the seven lowest rated brands were the five Fiat Chrysler brands. In 2016, all Fiat Chrysler brands (Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep, and Fiat; Ram was not included) finished in the bottom third of 30 brands evaluated in Consumer Reports' 2016 annual Automotive Brand Report Card; Consumer Reports cited "poor reliability and sub-par performance in our testing." Page needs deletion

This page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weaver%27s_Antique_Service_Station needs to be deleted. Even way back when it was posted, the station was closed. The pumps, etc. are now gone, and the windows boarded over. 174.34.38.138 (talk) 14:01, 12 May 2016 (UTC)

Notability is not temporary. Even if the station is closed, that doesn't make it less notable than it otherwise would be. Demographics

I was using this page to find out how many Europeans were here at various times during the Colonial Era. I notice there is no mention of Spanish, French, Dutch (except in the Eastern Seaboard Colonies), or others. In 1620 when Pilgrims landed there had been Spanish settlement in GA, FL, TX and CA. Waltonian Park

Waltonian Park, Cranberry Township, Venango County, PA

A point of special interest in Cranberry Township is Waltonian Park. In 1876, J. B. Smithman extended his streetcar line into Deep Hollow and there opened a popular park he called Smithman Park. Beginning in 1899, streetcar lines were extended to Franklin and Oil City. The park was bought by the Citizens Traction Company of Oil City in 1901 and renamed Monarch Park. At its peak, it contained 60 acres of woodland, dance pavilions, a theater, a cage of bears, a restaurant, picnic facilities, bowling lanes, a rotating swing ride, a roller coaster, slides, and flower gardens. The central attraction was destroyed by ice, cutting off streetcar lines to the park. This, coupled with the ever increasing use of the automobile, making it easier to drive elsewhere, led to the closing of the park just a few years later. Eventually, the property was purchased by the local Isaac Walton League. It remains open, but only faint traces of its former splendor can be seen. It is now essentially a nature park with picnic areas.

Announcing WikiConference North America in San Diego, Fri-Mon 7-10 October

I am not a regular participant to this WikiProject, so please excuse my intrusion. Still, I thought this would be of interest. Thanks RightCowLeftCoast for introducing this conference in a previous note here.

I am inviting participants in WikiProject United States to WikiConference North America to be held in San Diego Friday to Monday 7-10 October. Here are further details:

• We are accepting submissions until 31 August.
• We are accepting scholarship applications 9 August - 23 August. About 40 scholarships are available only for people in Canada, the US, and Mexico. Last year about 200 people applied for scholarships.
• More volunteers are needed. In the usual wiki-way, anyone may comment on program submissions. At the conference in person, all staff will be volunteer and all attendees are encouraged check in with conference organizers about volunteering for the task queue even for an hour. Anyone interested may contact FloNight and Rosiestep to offer volunteer support.
• Major sponsorship for the conference comes from the San Diego Public Library who are providing the venue and a grant from the Wikimedia Foundation.
• This is the third year of this conference, with WikiConference USA being in New York in 2014 and in Washington DC in 2015. Check the schedules of those for examples of what kinds of programming will be offered this year.

Just to clarify here, those articles are not duplicates. I wrote both of them. Both were given on 18 March 1968 in Kansas. One speech was given in the morning at Kansas State University, the other in the afternoon at the University of Kansas. While the latter incorporated material from the former, they were different. 10,000 Challenge

Hi, I was wondering if anybody would like to collaborate long term in trying to reach a 10,000 article improvement/creation drive for the US at Wikipedia:WikiProject United States/The 10,000 Challenge like we're doing for the UK at Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge? So far we've seen over 1800 article improvements in just a few months. Regional contests fuel the drive but it's a permanent goal now. Would American wikipedians be interested in running a similar thing and some state contests/editathons to increase output? Map question

Hi all...I have a question about File:US-Canada border counties.png, a map which is being used as illustration on Canada–United States border, which I wanted to raise for discussion. I've already raised a similar question about its Canadian companion File:Canada-US border regions.png at WP:CANTALK, where consensus agreed with me.

My core issue is that the US-Canada border is, by and large, readily identifiable on a map of either country just by looking at it, and that's especially true of a map where Canada is actually shaded in gray as Canada, rather than simply being left off the map entirely. Accordingly, I question whether there's actually anything useful or genuinely informative about a map which merely color codes every county that happens to be touching a border that's already plainly evident. Is this really educating anybody about anything they couldn't already have figured out on their own?

On the Canadian map, there's also the issue of significant misrepresentation, because every county that touches a Great Lake at all is blue-coded regardless of whether its own boundaries actually touch the international water-border or not — that issue isn't present to the same degree here, because the creator of this seems to have been more careful, but I still question whether it's useful information or not. Since pleasure-boating or swimming across a Great Lake isn't an effective or even really legal way to actually cross the border, I don't really see how fronting onto a lake that happens to have a border in it, which is located dozens of miles out from the shore, is worth colour-coding a map for.

As I'm not a member of Wikiproject US, however, I can't make a unilateral decision about it — I can merely raise my concerns for discussion. So my question is, is this map actually useful in a way I'm not seeing, or is it just a silly and unnecessary map combining the patently obvious with the irrelevant the way I see it? I believe it should be modified to removed the water borders that are not connected by any way (other than water). @Dr. Blofeld and Another Believer: I don't think this is going to get much interest these days unfortunately. Since the main contributor to these projects was Kumioko/Reguyla and they have since been blocked/banned/bullied off or however you want to phrase it from Wikipedia, these US projects don't have a champion anymore and pretty much went off the rails. Independence Day (United States)

During the course of a discussion on Remembrance Day missing from the Main Page for part of today, it's been pointed out that Independence Day (United States) doesn't really meet the quality standards usually desired for an article to be on the Main Page, particularly regarding sourcing. While I doubt anyone will actually lobby to remove this article from WP:On this day come July 4, 2017 because of this, it would be great if the article was improved. Falsified rating at Donald Trump

The Donald Trump Talk page banner was changed by Triggerhippie4 to read: "WikiProject United States / American Television / Government / Presidential elections / Presidents (Rated B-class, …)". But the project itself is actually rating it C-class.

List of United States counties and county equivalents

Hello, all!

First of all, my apologies if this is the wrong place. I am posting here instead of the talk page because there are more people watching this page.

This article was created in 2013 and is currently 673,351 bytes in size. This problem has been brought up before on the talk page, but simply the article is too big. I would like to propose subdividing the article by states, for example List of Colorado counties and county equivalents. I am a firm believer in BOLD but I felt that this is a large breaking change and therefore should be discussed first. I'm willing to do the actual work required (up to and including a nominating each for FL if it's ready), I'm just seeking consensus here first.

WP:SIZESPLIT says anything over 100KB should be split. I actually am a bit surprised that this huge list was only created in 2013, considering that the state lists have been around a lot longer. I'm not sure what purpose it serves. The size is too large for some browser/users to even pull up to view. The Texas list is already 83,298 bytes in itself, and looks pretty good without any more information moved onto it. US Presidential inauguration

We've got US presidential inaugurations listed in the Year articles up to 2001. Perhaps we could relax WP:Recent Years & include them at 2005, 2009, 2013 & 2017 articles. GoodDay (talk) 03:25, 19 November 2016 (UTC)

Articles needing assessment

I noticed that there are a lot of WikiProject United States related articles needing assessment under the various -stub categories. I assessed some for Nebraska, all of which had been previously deleted by Favonian. So, I am going to continue assessing some but I would suggest others take a look at these stub categories periodically for new articles that need assessment. Adding Connecticut

I believe that WikiProject Connecticut should be added to the USA roster, since it is a state, and part of the USA. I would understand if it is not included, since it is a semi-active community.--JJBers (talk) 16:38, 21 September 2016 (UTC)

JJBers I don't think there would be any objection here. However, because not all states wanted to be a part of this, it was left up to the individual state project to decide that. The person who created the WikiProject United States is no longer active. Did you mention this over at WT:WP Connecticut? Trying to shove all the small wikiprojects into this one was the goal of one user. He had added many without their desire. And pestered others until they did join. In the end it and other things led to his being banned. WPUS would get too large if all the us based projects joined this one. It was silly of him to try and force that. I have no comment on what you were just told. Whatever happened before is water under the bridge, except that the architect of this is not around to advise. Let me say that anyone from the Connecticut project can come to this page and discuss anything about their project. Nobody can restrict that. Nobody has to reply, but nobody can say Connecticut issues cannot be discussed here. If that's what you wanted, no problem. But overall what the bone of contention for individual projects has been is the talk page banner on each article. It's here Template:WikiProject United States. I had nothing to do with the banner, nor whatever bot it might be connected to that adds class ratings to articles. To my memory, projects who chose not to belong to this project didn't want this project's banner on their articles. They wanted to be more independent. So, you can post here anytime you want. Getting an answer to anything is hit and miss, not because it's Connecticut, but because this talk page isn't that active. But as for the banner, that really needs to be a decision for Connecticut to make. @JJBers, Maile66, and Djsasso: The statements made by Djsasso is not even close to the truth. The contributor who was the main architect in keeping this project going, Kumioko/Reguyla, was banned for criticizing administrator conduct on Wikipedia and was banned for that and remains banned for his refusal to follow a ban from the project he felt was unfair and a violation of site policy. Additionally, they did not pester any of the other projects, they did leave talk page notices as required on each project and let them decide. If there was interest great, if not then that is fine. Several were already completely dead and were added in order to keep them maintained to some level. According to WikiProject Connecticut's talk page history, they declined and were not really bothered further. Some also came back later and asked to be removed and Kumioko removed them as requested, reverted the talk page banners and helped several maintain their templates and projects after that even though they were not associated. So hyperbolic statements that Kumioko pressured projects into joining or stating that is the reason for the ban simply has no basis in truth. Don't take my word for it, go read the ban discussions. There is almost no mention at all about WikiProject United States. And no I am not them, so if you want to block me and accuse me of that because I bothered to read a lot of the history, then that's up to you. Mr. Nosferatu (talk) 16:31, 8 October 2016 (UTC)

Except that isn't true. He claimed it was cause he spoke out about admins. However, the original block came from his actions in regards to this project. At which point he blew up and made things worse which then led to the socking and all kinds of crap. And if you notice in my comment, I don't say it was the only reason. Because I see an editor that did a hell of a lot for Wikipedia that got burned by a few people in the community and it hurt them deeply no one cared. Now they are banned, with no hope of return and Wikipedia loses tons a day in contributions because of the egos of a few admins..including you it seems. If I could change that, I would, but I can't. What is absurd is your hyperbolic statement. Pretty much everyone here agreed that WP connecticut isn't going to be added. Mr. Nosferatu, the CT project was listed on the WikiProject United States main page two days ago, thus my ire. I removed it and it was rolled back, and now it's gone again. I've been occasionally lurking for a couple of years now as I don't have much time to edit and I was tired of constantly dealing with Kumioko's constant over-reach. The WPUS anschluss of other projects (and massive tagging of pages for no purpose) was quite real and it is not over-reaching to say so. FWIW, I am not editing under my account because I don't remember my password and it's saved on an old laptop that I rarely turn on anymore. That may change. Passwords can be reset so that doesn't seem a strong reason for not replying using your account. Anyway, while I agree with your complaint, I also think the use of the term 'anschluss' as something we should avoid, as its connotations are far more sinister than what happened in the WP US creation/merger. Native American territory

There seems to be a campaign to change "Indian" to "Native American." This is usually a good thing since "Indian" is ambiguous. The problem is that there was at one time an official "Indian Territory", and it has become a target of this campaign. So for example the article on the Sullivan Line, which marked the border between Missouri and Indian Territory, now talks about "Native American territory". This makes it sound like some vague geographic area in which Native Americans lived, not an actual territory with borders designated by the US government.

Another problem with this is that the term "Native American" meant something completely different in the 19th century.

I'm tempted to change some of these but don't want to be accused of being culturally insensitive. Opinions? Kendall-K1 (talk) 00:59, 1 December 2016 (UTC)

The Indian Territory article you have linked refers to the official government designation of a geographical area of Oklahoma. That was what the government of the United States designated it in its official paperwork. In that regard, it should be left as the government documents say it was. Maps of Indian Territory - National Archives. Indian Territory - Oklahoma Historical Society. If the state of Oklahoma and the federal US government haven't changed it, neither should any editor. I'm not familiar with the Sullivan Line, but I'd say that it also depends on what the government designations were, and are currently. And p.s., "native American" (not capped) meant something else in the first half of 20th century as well. It's only been around the 1960s or later that Native American came to mean those who used to be called Indians. Before that, "native American" meant you were born on American soil. Policy on adding cabinet nominees

Can anyone point me towards an established policy on when to add the next cabinet nominees to secretary articles (like Secretary of HHS) and current cabinet member articles as the successor? I've noticed they are being added uniformly as designee, however, that practice strikes me as odd considering it's not a forgone conclusion that the names the President elect puts forth will actually become secretary. In the article History of Pinckney island there is a reference to an Alexander Mackay who has the first white settler. The link on Mackay's name takes you to a fur trader that lived in Canada. Template:United States elections

Many of the Template:United States elections templates are incredibly incorrect. For example, on Template:United States elections, 1982, North Dakota is listed as having a gubernatorial election that year, while it actually had one in 1980 and 1984. United States Minor Outlying Islands

Would someone used to parsing geographic sources please have a look at United States Minor Outlying Islands. The infobox is showing an error, "Population Density: [convert: invalid number]" due to use of "n/a" in the wikitext. Ref 1 is a large pdf where Table 1 says the population in 2000 was 315+1=316 (agreeing with article), and the total area was 16.00 square miles (article says 13 sq mi). The article has too many fields set in the infobox. For example, it has population_census and population_estimate. Also, area_km2 and area_sq_mi. The many n/a should be removed, and the comments saying "Do not remove per WP:MOSNUM" seem to be misplaced. I'm hoping someone used to articles like this will fix the problems. I'm a Brett Favre fan, US football. I looked up Kiln, Mississippi ... which is his hometown ... and found an external link that doesn't seem to fit.

At the bottom of the page, External links: Anglo American Lightning Organisation, returning to flight XS422, the former ETPS Lightning at Stennis Airport, Kiln, Mississippi

Note the spelling of Organisation: UK not USA.

Everything on the link's website appears to be United Kingdom, not Mississippi.

Thought someone might want to look into it, at least. Maybe I'm wrong and it fits, but it doesn't seem to.

I've donated to wiki a couple of times, as finances permitted. This enduring part-time economy truly sucks, pardon my French. (How did that get started, referring to "French" when cussing?)

Cassius Marcellus Clay

Somewhat a novice to Wiki editing/contribution but:

My understanding is that Cassius Marcellus Clay during his time in Russia encountered a situation where he was challenged to a duel because he was seen as 'womanizing' at a formal gathering.

Cassius Marcellus Clay did not adhere to protocol and punched the gentleman right then and there.

If this incident can be vouched accurate and included in the article for Cassius Marcellus Clay, it would shed light on the diplomatic challenges of that era, and be a relevant adjunct to Cassius Clay//Mohammed Ali's Wiki Article.

I will try to find the citation that originated this 'understanding' but if some other contributor has already gone through trying to get it included I would appreciate knowing that.

Discrepancy between Carter Barron Amphitheater page and Carter Barron bio page

In reading the article about the Amphitheater named for Carter Barron, it states that he died from cancer:

This appears to be derived from a National Park Service brochure on the Amphitheater, as it is noted that this doc is referenced in the Wiki entry. There is a link to the NPS doc in the references at the bottom of the amphitheater entry.

On the separate Wikipedia bio entry of Carter Barron: there is a footnote reference to his morning in the Georgia Tech newsletter:

In that newsletter article, it states that he died from a cerebral hemorrhage.

Not sure how to resolve this, but thought it was worthy of note.

@Shearonink and BlueMoonset: It would probably be more appropriate to post on WT:GAN. But since you're posting here, I'm pinging BlueMoonset and asking the question if this nomination should be withdrawn. The GAC instructions say Nominators who are not significant contributors to the article should consult regular editors of the article on the article talk page prior to a nomination. The reviewer will be making suggestions to improve the article to GA quality during the review process; therefore, the review will require your involvement as nominator. Before nominating an article, ensure that you will be able to respond to these comments in a timely manner. The revision history stats indicate that nominator Barbara (WVS) has not made any edits at all on this article. Shearonink, in the absence of a reply from the nominator, and you're hoping for someone to work on the article, possible venues are one of the related WikiProjects (as here) or the GAN talk page (as noted by Maile). For someone wishing to nominate an article they haven't worked on, it isn't really a Catch-22: so long as you post to the article talk page asking whether anyone has objections to you nominating and wait the standard seven days, if no one objects you're all set, though you need to be willing to work on the article when a reviewer comes along.

I've just posted to the nominator's page, letting her know that she should be in touch as to whether she plans to work on the review. (I also appended the same material that Maile did above.) If she doesn't plan to work on it, or doesn't respond in a timely fashion, it probably makes sense to close the review unless you get a volunteer from this post. The Lack of the United States of America's capability to have an "Academic Standard Based Grading System"

Project assessment request page

There seems to be some problem on the assessment request page. The last several requests are completed and properly marked with the {{Done}} template when viewed in edit mode, but the  Done is not rendering when the page is viewed. Well outside my expertise. Terms "southern U.S.A." and "southeastern U.S.A."

There is an article called "southern United States" in Wikipedia; if you go the article on Alabama and click on "southeastern region" you could taken to "southern United States". As the talk page on southern United States implies, one cannot equate "southern" and "southeastern" U.S.A.. I think this requires a clean-up. Seeking feedback on draft article for James F. Allen

Hello, project members. I'm hoping I can get some additional feedback on a draft I recently submitted to AfC. Full disclosure: This draft article for James F. Allen, who serves as chairman of Hard Rock International and CEO of Seminole Gaming and has led the Seminole Tribe of Florida's gaming operations since 2001, was written on his behalf and as part of my work with Beutler Ink.

The draft was declined by User:SwisterTwister for being "Too suggestive of an advertised business profile for clients, notability cannot be inherited from others and the sources are largely consisting of simple announcements, local business journals, notices and similar." I posted a reply on the draft's talk page, and received a response in the form of an additional AfC comment that said the sources were "not significant weight-ful of notability, including because they include local business publications and similar". I'm not entirely sure what this means because I thought the sources used are considered major publications (for example, Forbes and The Press of Atlantic City); it would be helpful to get editors from here to take a look and point me in the right direction, or help confirm notability. My goal remains to have the draft deemed accurate and neutral, and moved into the main space.

I appreciate the AfC process and SwisterTwister's review of the draft, but this process has not really provided specific ways to improve the draft, so I'm casting a wider net and reaching out to people who may be 'watchlisting' this page for additional input. I've posted similar requests for feedback at WikiProject Biography, and on the Hard Rock Cafe and Seminole Tribe of Florida talk pages, but so far no one has responded. category overlap

Anyone happen to know the difference between Category:Lists of American people by educational affiliation and Category:Lists of people by university or college in the United States. I started to create a couple state groupings under the latter, then realized what appears to be an overlap. I would suggest we ask BrownHairedGirl who created Category:Lists of American people by educational affiliation in 2013. Or ask Cydebot who created the other one in 2012. — Maile (talk) 20:56, 30 April 2017 (UTC)

@Maile66 and Rhododendrites: sorry for the slow reply.

The difference is simple: one is subset of the other.

Category:Lists of American people by educational affiliation includes all lists of people by educational affiliation. The sub-cat Category:Lists of people by university or college in the United States contains only unis and colleges, but not (for example) high schools.

Per WP:SUBCAT, an article should be in the most specific appropriate category, and not (with rare exceptions) in its parent.

So in this case, Rhododendrites has created Category:Lists of people by university or college in Ohio, and correctly made it a subcat of Category:Lists of people by educational affiliation in Ohio. Electoral history sections

I was wondering if I could receive input about the inclusion of an Electoral history section on the article of a politician, particularly one that has been elected more than once, but not enough times to merit a standalone article (e.g. "Electoral history of..."). I was looking at Featured Articles of politicians, such as Ernie Fletcher and Paul Patton, neither of which has an Electoral history section, while I've also found Electoral history sections on other Governor's articles, such as Doug Ducey. Are there any guidelines that indicate Electoral history sections would be beneficial to an article, or is it traditionally not included? @Maile66: I probably would request a bot: whichever way is easiest is the way I'd do it. Anyway such decisions should be made on a state-by-state basis. As for the MOS it should probably state that in the lead that each municipality should be called by its legal designation and not necessarily the superficial "type name" (in Texas a designation of "city," "town," or "village" is just cosmetic and has no legal basis) WhisperToMe (talk) 15:15, 28 May 2017 (UTC)

Broken Links at the National Register of Historic Places Listings in Morrow County, Ohio Webpage

June 20, 2017 Hello, At the National Register of Historic Places Listings in Morrow County Ohio webpage, I found broken links. When you click on the "Name of the Register"  is when I found the broken links at the following  webpage: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Register_of_Historic_Places_listings_in_Morrow_County,_Ohio    When you click on the name, it takes you to Wikipedia where you can read more Info about it. The following Registered Names has an error that takes you to Wikipedia that reads, "Wikipedia does not have an article with this exact name" and you cannot read anything more about it.  These links worked correctly just a few days ago, now they don't.      These Registered Names I'm referring too are: Reuben Benedict House, Samuel P Brown House, Floral House, Jarvis House, Enos Miles House, Old Bartlett and Global Store, A.B. Sears House, U.S. Post Office, Wood Commercial Building, and the Exchange Hotel When you click on the photos, those links works find... but it's when you click on the names that it doesn't work. Why is the Seal black & white?

It was changed recently. I understand, officially, that "Some versions of the University seal feature a fluted edge. However, the current version with a clean, smooth edge is preferred." and that is why it was changed, but why is it black & white? The visual standards neglects to state this preference.

NAS Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico

Folks,

Could not find any mention of NAS Roosevelt Roads on any of the listings...active or otherwise. When the bombing range on Vieques was closed down would have to assume that Roosy Roads was no longer of use so it probably was abandoned but thought it still worth listing in the former naval air stations.

Had some great times there supporting Marine fighter squadrons there in the 1950's. Did manage to put one FJ-2 in the weeds over the overrun when he missed the Morest gear cable

@Bobo.03: Honestly doing anything for this project is like handling plutonium. I stopped editing this project when Kumioko got banned and Wikipedia a short time later. He was trying to improve Wikipedia and did a hell of a job doing it and got run out of here for his efforts by people who largely just want to push POV. Loading the wrong template: Texas

I just moved Laura (1835 steamboat) (stub) into main space and rated the article as a stub with low importance. I posted templates for the following WikiProjects on the talk page: Houston, Ships, and Texas. I forgot that the Texas template loads a raft of categories for the United States. When this steamboat was in use, between 1835 and 1840, Texas was an independent republic. Should I just remove the Texas template, or have I set off some automated chain of events? Please advise. Help with a draft?

I was wondering if anyone would be willing to help with the drafts at User:Happyweekdays/Chinese students in the United States and User:Happyweekdays/Chinese faculty in U.S. I think that this could be a good topic on Wikipedia in general considering how many Chinese people are coming to the United States for education and/or to serve as educators, enough to where it would warrant its own article. Currently the student who is working on these topics (Happyweekdays) has students and faculty in two different articles, but I don't know if they could be merged into one article. Anomaly in list of U.S. Attorneys

Hoping somebody can help me sort this out. Billy J. Williams was appointed by President Obama in 2015 [2] and is still serving as U.S. Attorney for the District of Oregon. Yes, he just held a conference in Portland. And I added to the Williams bio this Associated Press citation also stating he was retained/re-appointed. But why does the NY Times say all the US Attorneys resigned? And our article 2017 dismissal of U.S. attorneys says "The other 47 U.S. Attorney posts were either already vacant by the end of Obama's administration or the incumbent U.S. Attorney had resigned at the beginning of Trump's administration". I was surprised at the lack of an article on this political term, so made a stub. It was a common term during the Civil Rights Movement, for Southern authorities to allege that local African-Americans didn't actually want to protest or change things, but that the impetus was being driven by Northern white radicals coming down to stir up trouble. Inquiry about Joaquín Miguel Elizalde

Would a Spanish Filipino who immigrate to the United States be considered Spanish Americans or Filipino Americans or both? I ask due to this edit done by AuH2ORepublican (talk · contribs). I believe the editor means well, but would like to know whether the edit has consensus of interested Wikiprojects. I am just unsure myself, but unsure enough to ask whether Joaquín Miguel Elizalde would be categorized under what ethnicity.--RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 06:17, 21 March 2018 (UTC)

For all practical matters, a Spanish Filipino (of 100% Spanish stock) who emigrated to the United States would be classified however he wished to be classified. If he said that because he was Filipino he wanted to be deemed an Asian, then he likely would be deemed to be an Asian. And given that Hispanic is an ethnicity, not a race, and that Hispanics may be of any race (because of widespread African slavery in much of Latin America, many Hispanics are black, although the Congressional Black Caucus refuses to accept it for political reasons), it certainly would not be an impediment for such person to be deemed both Asian and Hispanic (as are, for example, Japanese Peruvians who emigrate to the U.S.). The only example of which I can think of the U.S. government of this day and age not accepting a person’s self-classification in a racial group would be if a white South African (or other African of pure European stock) claimed to be an African American, since such term has a very different connotation in America.

That being said, in the context of a list of Asian and Pacific Islands Americans in Congress, such person’s racial background, not his place of birth, should be paramount, because “Asian” and “Pacific Islander” are racial classifications. Descendants of natives of the Hawaiian Islands are Pacific Islanders, but descendants of Europeans or of European-Americans aren’t, even if both their parents were born and raised in Hawaii. Similarly, someone with four Spanish grandparents is not Asian even if he (and one of his parents) was born and raised in the Philippines. That’s the reason why I followed the Hawaiian precedent and removed Joaquín Manuel Elizalde from the list of Asian and Pacific Islands Americans in Congress. Now, if the editing community reaches a consensus that he should be included because “all Filipinos are, ipso facto, Asian,” then they can add him back in, but I warn them that they would have a hard time distinguishing Elizalde’s case from that of every single congressman who was born and raised in Hawaii (including not only a dozen or so white guys, but also former Illinois Senator Barack Obama). Near the top of this Talk page, there is an information box that reads as follows:

"Looking for Wikipedia talk: WikiProject United States in the Spanish Wikipedia? See... ¿Buscando por el discusión del Wikiproyecto Estados Unidos en la Wikipedia en español? Véase... es:Wikiproyecto Discusión:Estados Unidos."

The Spanish-language translation of the initial sentence is incorrect, and appears to have been done using a direct translation of each word instead of a translation of the sentence as a whole. "Looking for" should be translated as "buscando," not as "buscando por," and "discusión" is a feminine noun. The correct translation is "¿Buscando la discusión del Wikiproyecto Estados Unidos en la Wikipedia en español?" Does someone know how to fix that? The state of health care in the United States: please help to write Draft:ZOOM+Care

Hi all. :-)

I am looking at drafts in a somewhat random fashion, not having established my strong topic areas at Wikipedia yet. In one draft, Draft:ZOOM+Care, the author appears respond to comments well, but for me the article context is rather unclear and confusing. I.e. while reading the draft I am very surprised to find that patients visit of a physical assistant required some legislation changes which the 'Zoom+Care' company allegedly did (first paragraph of 'Legal Initiatives'). In some places in Australia this is a very basic process, if people come to a doctor but doctors are too busy then the patient may be offered to see a nurse. How does the US really do this? I would find this on the Internet, but I think that it is outside of my strong knowledge area, meaning I would have difficulty using the correct keywords to obtain this information. Your assistance with clarifying the context for this draft would be appreciated.
