User script to detect unreliable sources edit

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.

@Joofjoof I hope they get deleted. You either do a good job and make a decent article to start with or do not just make thousands sub-stubs articles to increase article count and ask people then to bring them to the point where they are actually viable articles. see this FuzzyMagma (talk) 11:32, 20 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

Project-independent quality assessments edit

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. • Abdallah Khalil: I am very confused about the identity and details of this person. This article, which I just started, is about the former Prime Minister, though I have no info on if he is still alive or not. The National Movement for Reform and Development article makes mention of a Khalil Abdallah, which I'm pretty sure is not the same person. Can anyone shed some light on the subject? - BT 01:37, 30 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
    • Abdallah Khalil, the former prime minister, has died in 1971 according to the Arabic Wikipedia page. Just a couple of statements are there, but I will translate them to the en page. He is no relation to Khalil Abdallah of NMRD. --Karouri 20:55, 18 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
  • There are some nice articles on the Catalan Wikipedia about Sudan and related subjects. Compare ca:Beja and en:Beja people, for instance. • hi all ... in Central Equatoria is said, that the changing of the name happens in 2005, but the external link doesn't proof it - there is written: "The resolution has been passed to the southern Interim Assembly for endorsement and approval before the name Bahr el Jebel is dropped." so officially it was renamed on April 15, 2006 - see 16.04.06 - Sudan Tribune: "Southern Sudan Bahr al-Jabal State changes name" ... or have i misunderstood something ? Sven-steffen arndt 12:30, 30 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
    • I was trying to figure this out a couple of weeks ago too. What I was trying to find was the Arabic name for Central Equatoria. Everything I could find still used Bahr al-Jabal, except for Wikipedia and a couple of news reports. This included the Sudanese government site ([1], [2]), but I'm not sure how well maintained that is. —Bkell (talk) 14:09, 30 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
      • ... my Arabic-expert gives me this: Al-Istiwa'iyya al-wusta (الاستوائية الوسطى, al-Istiwāʾiyya al-wusṭā, English: Central-Equatoria) ... but my questions refers more to the date 2005, should be April 2006 ... Sven-steffen arndt 16:55, 31 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
  • hi all ... is this article South Sudan Liberation Movement a fake? ... it seems to be very confusing (firt SSLM, later SLA but not in Darfur) ... Sven-steffen arndt 16:44, 13 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
    • Naw. It's a real organization but the acronym should be SSLA for the military wing, South Sudan Liberation Army, not SLA like the Sudan Liberation Army. I've got a book with some details of its formation but don't know what their current status is. I'll add some details. - BanyanTree 17:18, 13 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
    • I can confirm that SSLM has existed for some time. I believe it split from the SPLA/SPLM for some time. At some point it had an agreement with the government - that is before the current peace accord. I also believe that it splintered at some point with Riek Machar going back to the SPLA - I am not sure what happened to Matip. Riek Machar is now the second man in SPLA and is currently Vice-President of South Sudan as a result of the peace accord. This is all from memory - I lived in Sudan at the time. I will try to find more details and references later. --Karouri 21:05, 18 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
  • Hi all, maybe you will decide which of these 3 cities is the real one: Wau, Sudan - Waw, Sudan - Wow, Sudan? Sven-steffen arndt 21:14, 5 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
    • I went first the first one, and not just because it was the one I had edited. I does appear to be the most common spelling, at least of the sources that I read. I have merged the pages and fixed the items on dab pages. Cheers, BanyanTree 00:48, 6 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
      • :-) ... German spelling is something different ... now, i can correct the interwiki-Links ... Sven-steffen arndt 13:40, 6 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
    • I made a locator map for Wau, and I had to decide on a spelling. All the sources I could find (the Encyclopædia Britannica, the Hammond Explorer Atlas of the World, Goode's World Atlas by Rand McNally, and the CIA World Factbook) used the spelling Wāw, so that's what I put on the map. But it would be very easy to change if consensus determines a different spelling. —Bkell 23:03, 12 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
  • This is sort of turning into a checklist for topics related to Sudan, a country which has been in the news a lot lately, mostly because of the Darfur conflict. (Maybe it should be turned into a category?) This page will contain a list of topics which need pages, and pages that need improvement.

Ancient Sudan Templates edit

Hi, I recently created the Kushite religion footer and sidebar. Next, I wanted to create a template for Ancient Sudan. Some of the same info will be on it, but I'm creating a list of topics that should be added. Is there anything that you all think should absolutely be on the template? MiddleOfAfrica (talk) 00:08, 29 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

Possibly something similar to Template:Ancient Rome topics? MiddleOfAfrica (talk) 01:10, 29 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
It’s needed and thanks for doing it
My advice will be to try to follow Wikipedia:Navigation template, for example don’t link an article more than once, few redlinks should be ok as you are working actively in creating these articles. Try to separate Ancient Sudan and ancient Egypt if you can, although there is a huge overlap between the two evidence by the Kushite religion footer FuzzyMagma (talk) 06:33, 29 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
Dear MiddleOfAfrica
The use of terms Such as "Ancient Sudan " and "Kushite" is not accurate. The kingdom of Kush is a time period in Nubian history , "Sudan" is a foreign designation and an exonym, furthermore The Sudan is a colonial invention created in 1956. Before that , "Sudan was as a term was used to designate the entire Western Africa. Most of the topics covered in the toolbar describes Nubian culture and does not include the variety of cultures that constitute modern Sudanese society. For example , the inhabitants of Darfur and Eastern Sudan and their culture are not included , most of the topics in the Kushite footer actually covers aspects of Nubian history. Nubia predates the term "Sudan" and is the original name. Kush is an Egyptian term and not related to the rest of the multicultural ethnicities that make up the Sudan today.
Kindly take that into consideration. If you are convinced of the footer as it is then the term "Ancient Nubia" is a more accurate description , If you want it to be "Ancient Sudan" then you must include the cultures of the ethnicities of South Sudan , Western Sudan and Eastern Sudan. Kryako (talk) 12:27, 21 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Greetings. Thank you for your feedback. However, I am aware, which is why the previous footers aren't entitled "Ancient Sudan religion" and instead say "Kushite religion." Our use of "Ancient Sudan" in this thread was but a placeholder, similar to the use of "Ancient America" when referring to Indigenous American societies, despite the name being of European origin. With that said, the aforementioned Ancient Sudan template actually would include more civilizations and beyond those considered Nubian and Nilotic. More topics, more cultures, and more ethnicities. The Kingdom of Kush templates are already created, so there wouldn't be a need to recreate them just to put "Ancient Sudan" in the title. When I say "Ancient Sudan," I actually mean all peoples of Ancient Sudanic civilizations. MiddleOfAfrica (talk) 21:45, 21 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Good article nominations: Kushite religion edit

Kushite religion has officially been nominated for Wikipedia Good Article. MiddleOfAfrica (talk) 22:08, 4 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

It normally takes month for the article to be reviewed, having said that, the article need some copy editing. I will put some pointers that I hope it will help. Just know that standard for writing for GA is high and it is better to go through WP:MOS FuzzyMagma (talk) 17:35, 5 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
@MiddleOfAfrica well that was quick! But please don’t be discouraged. GA standard is very high and you were very lucky to have a reviewer with such good insights and experience. Hope you can take the comments on board and improve the article further. You always ping the reviewer to check your work again before you re-submit it FuzzyMagma (talk) 14:49, 8 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
Oh no, I love constructive criticism. I actually agree with the reviewer's feedback. When I rewrote the Kongo religion article, I was able to be completely analyze and explore more aspects of the religion because I had more sources available to me. I just need to acquire more sources and restructure the article to focus more on the actual religion. I definitely see the issues with the article in its current state.
