Shvarn/Švarnas

Hi guys. I'm a little confused. Does anyone know the source for Shvarn being the son of Daniel of Galicia? Only reason I'm looking is because it seems a little odd that a Rus' prince would become the high king/grand prince of pagan Lithuania that early. Seeking info on 1932 Vilnius

Dear Project editors, I'm hoping someone here might help me find this information:

• The "Municipal Laboratory of Natural History" in Wilno, 1932, was apparently known as "Dmuchowski's Dmochowski's Laboratory." A search of that surname in the Polish and Lithuanian Wikipedias yields nothing pertinent possibilities I'm unable to evaluate. Where might I confirm this name and perhaps learn something about the eponymous individual?

Settlement template default map

It seems that, Image:LietuvaMiestams.png is rather bad image for this template, as for example in Stakliškės is not shown properly on the map, and Dusetos, despite that it does seem show right, coordinates differ slightly from an article in Lithuanian wikipedia. The official map of Lithuania, as far I can remember was rather ugly, but I did at least show location properly. Any ideas? Maybe there's is a possibility to redraw the default image and make it at least look better (it is a bit distorted and looks different than current map, but at least pushpin with right coordinates is right). We should find some solution, because it is not good to distort coordinates or show the wrong location on the map.--Lokyz (talk) 10:50, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

Hoax?

Well, there are several photographs on the Google maps, and it seems like it is a stripe of sand[1], not an airport. Judging by the bombs found there it seems it was a place where bombers were trained [2]. That depends, on what subject to choose - Baltic religions (mythology) would get a rather big template, (Lithuanians, Latvians, Prussians and their mythologies, although I do know much more about Lithuanian mythology. Infobox redesign

Hello, I redesigned infobox for municipalities. See {{Infobox savivaldybe/temp}} and first implementation at Marijampolė municipality. It uses almost the same info as the old infobox, but the format is based on {{infobox settlement}}. Please comment. Note that political information in most municipality articles is outdated. History periods categories

I've created a new category under Category:History of Lithuania namely Category:History of Lithuania (1250-1569). I think there are quite a lot of articles and more specific categories do apply. I've chosen the date 1250 as the date of Coronisation of Mindaugas (kingdom and all the recognition), although it may be moved back. First of, I think it's a good idea. But the dash in between the dates should – (en dash) and not - (hyphen). Then I do not quite agree with 1250 date. I think we should use something like 1200. Events like 1219 treaty with Halych or 1236 Battle of Saule should belong to that category. Also we should agree on some sort of scheme for other periods. There are two ways we can go about this. Use Polish example and use specific dates to limit the periods, or use French/Irish example and use descriptive names. The choices look something like:

• Category:History of Lithuania (until 1205) or Prehistoric Lithuania
• Category:History of Lithuania (1205–1569) or Grand Duchy of Lithuania
• Category:History of Lithuania (1569–1795) or Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth
• Category:History of Lithuania (1795–1918) or Lithuania within the Russian Empire
• Category:History of Lithuania (1918–1940) or First Republic of Lithuania
• Category:History of Lithuania (1940–1990) or Lithuanian Soviet Socialist Republic
• Category:History of Lithuania (1990–present) or Second Republic of Lithuania

I'd agree under some conditions - First republic - the name is still disputed, years would suffice. Soviet occupation should be noted as this. More suggestions later. I guess I did not realize the second choice would open a can of worms in same cases. I take it back. I also revised 1200 date to 1205. 1200 is completely arbitrary. In 1205 first known Lithuanian Žvelgaitis died in a battle. Another possible date is 1219 - treaty with Halych (and cut off date I chose for History of Lithuania (1219–1295). Image copyright templates

Could anyone create comprehensive section about tagging free images (Lithuanian law -governmental use, out of copyrigths, fair use and so on) on the mainspace of the Project. For now I do only know how to tag my own images. I do have load of photographs taken by my father/grandfather (even grand grand father) - how should I mark them?. Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

• The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
• The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
• A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Lithuanian minority in Poland

prohibition to speak Lithuanian (...) on phone until in the fall of communism in 1990 - I would rather believe that the prohibition was introduced during the martial law in Poland (as for many other languages) and removed years before the fall of communism. How such a prohibition could have been imposed without the martial law? Even if the quoted source claims this (which I'm not able to check) it's kind of polar bears are common animals in Poland knowledge.Xx236 (talk) 06:18, 2 October 2008 (UTC)

Discussion about Holocaust

Our agreement is that Holocaust scholars are speaking about "only" 6 Holocaust Extermination camps (stupid definition but ....). Our disagreement is about creation of sub section other extermination camps. With knowledge that there has been many others extermination camps and sites (I know 7 of them) question is: Will we create subsection in The Holocaust template for this camps ? Lithuanian sources for a Japanese photographer

I like to think that I'm moderately well up on elderly, widely exhibited and noteworthy Japanese photographers, but it was only today that I first encountered Toshiki Ozawa. The examples of Ozawa's works that are linked to seem to be humdrum nudes and more humdrum touristy scenes, though I could be missing something and anyway it's not for me to judge quality (and if I did, dozens of celebrated photographers would be out on their ear).

Ozawa is active in the Fuji photo gallery in Lithuania. I (from Tokyo) would never have believed such a place existed if I hadn't happened to come across it one day. (At first I thought I was hallucinating.) And the article cites sources on Ozawa in Lithuanian, which I am unfortunately unable to read. Would some reader of Lithuanian who happens to be interested in Japanese photographers -- and there must be hundreds of you! -- care to comment on just what is sourced to them?

All in all a curious aroma hangs over this article; I've asked WikiProject Japan about it too. And I wonder if a Lithuanian-language article on Ozawa ever existed.... Hoary (talk) 01:27, 12 January 2009 (UTC)

Two small goose chases: Vilna Fortress and commander Hershelman

Hello! I've been trying to find information about the "Vilna Fortress" and a military commander named "Hershelman". I have exhausted all the sources at my disposal, and thought I would bring the goose chase here in case someone would be willing to do some localized research. Apparently the Vilna Fortress was some kind of prison (perhaps a military prison) that existed in Vilnius from at least the years 1909–1936. It was commonly used to house political prisoners and was occasionally called "No. 14" for some reason. Hershelman was the military commander of Vilna/Вильна/Vilnius in 1909. I have no other information about him except for the fact that Moishe Tokar tried to assassinate him. If anyone has any leads on either of these goose chases, please message me on my talk page. Vilna Fortress/Sluškų rūmai(?)

There is no real fortress in Vilnius. I found that there was a prison in Antakalnis for political prisoners called citadel 14. It was opened in a former palace of Sluška/Slushko family. BTW, "Moishe Tokar" get a single Google books result, no Google scholar and 35 hits on general Google (and most of it is from Wikipedia). Are you sure it was a real person? Renata (talk) 02:40, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

I found the following passage about the Slushko Palace on the internet. It looks like it might be relevant, but I can't read Lithunian (and Google does a poor job translating it). Can anyone translate it for me?

1831 m. carinė vyriausybė rūmus iš pirklio atpirko ir pritaikė karinei tvirtovei (fortams), kuri buvo įrengiama aplink Gedimino kalną. 1872 m. rūmuose įsteigtas etapinis katorgos kalėjimas. Kaip kalėjimą 1919–1940 m. rūmus naudojo ir lenkai, okupavę Vilnių.

BTW, where did you see that it was called "citadel 14"? I was able to find confirmation that the palace was converted into a military prison in 1872 by the tsarist military, but nothing about political prisoners or the number 14. Kaldari (talk) 16:09, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

Translation: in 1831 tsarist authorities bought the palace from merchants and converted it into military fortress (forts), which were being constructed around Gediminas Tower. In 1872 a hard labour (?) prison was established. During 1919-1940 the palace was also used as prison by Polish government.

Number 14 came from Lithuanian Wikipedia about Antakalnis and about prisons. Sorry, do not have much time to dig around. Renata (talk) 17:55, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

General Hershelman/Herschelmann

I found a story in the November 29, 1908 issue of the New York Times about a "Governor General Hershelman of Moscow". The story is about him expelling a 18-month old Jewish baby from Moscow. Could this be the same Hershelman that Tokar, a Russian Jewish anarchist, tried to assassinate? There are a few other mentions of a "General Hershelman" in Google Books, but none seem to give any details about him (even a first name). Kaldari (talk) 16:53, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

God knows! Unlike the 1907 (Moscow) assassination attempt, the 1909 (Vilno) assassination attempt does not seem to make it to Russian (or English) web; the book quoted in the Moishe Tokar article seems to be the only reference to it online. This is actually quite curious, since Sergei Konstantinovich Gershelman presumably was just an important personage in 1909 as he was in 1907. You probably would need to get a hold of microfilmed newspapers from the period - and then, you may discover that the general's name was perhaps misspelled ("Fenga" certainly would be a very unusual family name in Russian Empire) Vmenkov (talk) 04:49, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

As Gershelman was not especially notable outside of Russia, I imagine you would have to look through old Russian or Lithuanian newspapers. Any suggestions on what newspapers were prominent in the area during the turn of the 20th century? (I looked through the New York Times and Scotsman archives already with no luck.) Name question

Hi guys, I was wondering if a person born in Lithuanian SSR (more in general, I'd like to know in Baltic SSRs) was born in Lithuanian customs (Latin script, without Patronymic) or in Russian customs (Cyrillic script, with Patronymic). I think it's a very interesting issue about Soviet culture and how Soviet Union delt with minorities and local languages, but I can't find infos anywhere. I pulled out my birth certificate (from mid 1980s). All terms (like name, place of birth, date of birth, etc.) are in Russian then in Lithuanian, but all actual names are in Lithuanian only (Latin script). My father's name is next to mine, but not in patronymic form. I don't even know how my patronymic name would sound... So at least in Lithuania, the names were not forced into Russian customs. I am very much interested in any more information about Matas Slanciauskas

Matas Slanciauskas was my great-grandfather. He was an itinerant tailor, and in his travels he collected folk tales, folk songs, and other assorted bits of folklore. He did this because he feared that, with the tsar's Russification program, which prohibited the use of the Lithuanian language in any printed material, the Lithuanian language and its folklore might disappear.

In his travels he used to teach children how to read and write Lithuanian, and he had many Lithuanian books in his home. Because of this, he was imprisoned for three years and then exiled to Latvia. My mother and grandmother (Jadwiga Slanciauskaite Vilciauskiene) were smuggled across the border into Latvia at night in order to travel to the United States in 1907.

Our family has a copy of a book of his collected folk tales, in Lithuanian. We have been able to get about half of the book translated. Is there anyone out there who would be willing to translate the remainder of the book (about 200 pages)? We would pay a negotiable amount for such a task.

pronunciations

I've come across two articles, Žirmūnai and Vepriai, which are transcribed according to Wikipedia:Simplified phonetic transcription for Lithuanian. I wonder if there might be others out there. I don't see a point in a "transliteration", since Lith. already uses the Latin alphabet, and the "simplified" system isn't any easier to read than the orthography. And if it isn't linked to the key, then it's completely worthless. If an editor feels that stress should be indicated (which I would agree with), and doesn't control the IPA, then IMO it would be better to use the traditional acute/circumflex/grave system, since the "simplified" system doesn't distinguish stress patterns on long vowels. I transcribed Žirmūnai in IPA, but I have no idea if the ū should have a falling tone.

Does anyone agree with the simplified system, or should we delete it? Can we agree that any articles still using this system, since none link to the key any longer, be converted to something more universal?

What we've done for other languages like Russian is to create a special IPA key (like WP:IPA for Russian) and an IPA template that links to it (like {{IPA-ru}}), which displays like this: Russian pronunciation: [xxx]. This has the advantage of created a centralized place to discuss the best method of IPA transcription (like, do we only mark tone for acute, or do we try to come up with s.t. for circ. as well), helps keep the articles in line, so different articles don't reflect different interpretations of L. phonology, and also through 'what links here' provides a method to update all such articles if changes are made to the key.

It's hard for me to confident with the simplified system. Is the first e in Akmenė a long vowel, for example? Which tone does it have? kwami (talk) 10:25, 10 May 2009 (UTC)

MK just informed me it's circumflex. That makes it a good example of what the IPA looks like if we only transcribe phonetic pitch (acute) and use stress for the rest: a stress mark before a length mark in words like this: [ɐkmæˈːneː]. I'm doing this for the debate, but I'm not sure it's a good system: Or, it would be a straightforward system with a Lith. IPA key, but I don't know if people will like it. (We could also transcribe it [ɐkmæ̌ːneː], of course, but that implies that the word consistently has a rising tone, which from what I understand it does not.) Unreferenced biographies of living persons

Hello all. As you may know, the issues surrounding these articles have recently heated up - see Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Biographies of living people for details. One of the options discussed there is the deletion of any such articles that lack references. This would probably be staged by year of creation (oldest first), so it's not an emergency. I'd like to ask our project participants to proactively help reference these articles. The referencing does not need to be sophisticated, especially for stubs; just add a reference section with a url or book source with a short description of the source.

Despite the discussion at [4] closing as consensus to rename Category:Polish Lithuanians to Category:Lithuanian people of Polish descent, one of the Polish editors who opposed that decision has created Category:Poles_from_Lithuania (i.e. precisely the name which he wanted the category to be renamed as). He has since started to move articles into this category and when people object and revert his change, he simply moves the articles back again, as can be seen here [5]. His edit summaries also leave something to be desired: "armenian? this is sick, he has only armenian roots" and "this is sick, Mickiewicz was Lithuanian of Polish descent??? He was Pole lived in Gr. Or better yet some Norman Davies, or Timothy Snyder concerning the matter. It's often touted around here that Jan Dzierzon stated that he was a Pole. The fact that Pilsudski stated that he was a Lithuanian is not relevant of course. He probably didn't mean it. Not really anyway. No doubt about it. Not if you say so. The WikiProject Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons (UBLPs) aims to reduce the number of unreferenced biographical articles to under 30,000 by June 1, primarily by enabling WikiProjects to easily identify UBLP articles in their project's scope. The article on reflexive verbs has very limited examples on Lithuanian, but having a more complete coverage of the language in the example tables would be interesting and useful. The Eastern Europe article is fraught with errors, mislabels and slanted facts as if much of it was written by ultraconservatives during the Cold War from an ethnocentric position. If you agree with that Lithuania is a Central/Northern European state rather than a Soviet satellite, please assist in rewording/correcting the article lead and body. List of Lithuanian artists

The list links several stubs, among them articles with no sources and no proves that referenced people were ethnically Lithuanian.

Examples:

• Jonas Damelis - was born in Latvia, worked in Minsk. The article doesn't quote any source conforming his Lithuanian ethnicity. In fact Lithuanian Wikipedia suggests he had German origins.
• Mykolas Kuleša - probably KULESZA Michał (1800-1863) malarz, pedagog (rodzice: Michał Kulesza i N. N.) http://www.sejm-wielki.pl/n/Kulesza - did he ever use the name "Mykolas Kuleša"?Xx236 (talk) 09:44, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

A lot of unreferenced Lithuanian painter stubs were created in a well-meant 'overcome cultural bias' initiative. They probably all need work.

WRT ethnicity categories. I don't like these in non-straightforward cases such as Jonas Damelis; if a reliable source clearly asserts an ethnicity, OK, but until one is found, I prefer to write around the issue. If an artist is notable, there are usually plenty of other things to mention. Genre, works, life events, etc. The reference I put into the Damelis article doesn't address his ethnicity, but it does classify him as "a classical artist of Vilnius" [6], probably because he studied at Vilnius University. I think that supports the LT artist category for now.

I haven't worked on Mykolas Kuleša yet. But my read of WP policies is that we work by using names found in reliable sources. And he is called Mykolas Kuleša at a Lithuanian Art Museum page.[7]. Self-identification by other names is notable of course when supported by RS. Novickas (talk) 15:50, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

A) The Art Museum site lists Mykolas Kuleša as born in 1800, while the unsourced, almost blank Wiki entry on a painter called Mykolas Kuleša (cross-referenced on the List of Lithuanian artists) gives the person's year of birth as "1799."

B) It is fairly common practice in Lithuania that some names of non-Lithuanians are used in Lithuanized versions without any implication that the person is Lithuanian (e.g., the Polish autocrat Wojciech Jaruzelski is typically called Voicechas Jaruzelskis in Lithuania, but that does not constitute a claim that he was Lithuanian).

C) The Art Museum site does not say that the listed artists are Lithuanians. It merely lists artists (some of) whose work is at the Museum.

D) When the painter published his portfolio in Paris in 1850, he spelled his name Michel [sic] Kulesza and called himself "peintre polonais" in it.

"King & King" and the "Law for the Protection of Minors"

I have two separate Austrian news sources, generally reliable, which report that the children's book King & King (it would presumably be Karalius & Karalius) prompted Lithuania's law which restricts information about homosexuality. However, I feel that if this is the case, I should be able to find information on it in Lithuanian media, rather than just Austrian media, even if the sources are up to RS standards. I looked on delfi.lt which the main news portal. Searching for the book, I found the AP story from 2004 and an article on Dutch textbooks from 2010. The law was adopted in 2002; it was revised in Dec 2008 to include homosexuality among the suppressed topics (there was much of political back-and-forth after that). Weirdly, I cannot find what prompted the change. There was a scandal about 'Gender Loops' organization, funded by EU, that wanted to include homosexual references ("king kissing a king") in school curriculum, but that surfaced in March 2009. Note that unlike other tools, this tool aggregates all views from redirects, which means it will typically have higher numbers. (For January 2014 specifically, 35 hours of data is missing from the WMF data, which was approximated from other dates. For most articles, this should yield a more accurate number. However, a few articles, like ones featured on the Main Page, may be off).

Web tools, to replace the ones at tools:~alexz/pop, will become available over the next few weeks at toollabs:popularpages. All of the historical data (back to July 2009 for some projects) has been copied over. The tool to view historical data is currently partially available (assessment data and a few projects may not be available at the moment). The tool to add new projects to the bot's list is also available now (editing the configuration of current projects coming soon). Unlike the previous tool, all changes will be effective immediately. OAuth is used to authenticate users, allowing only regular users to make changes to prevent abuse. A visible history of configuration additions and changes is coming soon. Once tools become fully available, their toolserver versions will redirect to Labs.

Wiki Loves Pride 2014

IPA key example words needed

I have just created Help:IPA for Lithuanian, because it seemed like a major gap in Wikipedia's IPA keys. Some concerns have been raised regarding the sourcing of information in two articles in the proposed featured topic: Act of Independence of Lithuania and Signatories of the Act of Independence of Lithuania. I do not know Lithuanian and I am therefore having trouble finding sources for this information. I would greatly appreciate any help you are able to provide. Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project.
